It's a bit mental, isn't it? The commentators are trying to put a brave face on the fact that there will be either no race, or a race with six cars in it.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

So, Michelin tyres aren't very good then?

C J (C J), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Bernie Midget doesn't look best pleased, does he?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Martin Brundle is being fantastically rude to Bernie Ecclestone. This pleases me greatly (xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Now he's harrassing Mrs Ecclestone. This is brilliant!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

This is basically a broadcast journalist's worst nightmare, isn't it?

I get the feeling the chances of F1 overtaking NASCAR in the hearts of Americans may be slightly lesser after this.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE Martin Brundle! He's just storming around being really rude to people.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Ferrari now 1/20 to win this race on the exchanges.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Schuey better fucking win this race after all this.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I thought ailsa had typed "Martin Grumble" for a minute there, which made me laugh out loud.

C J (C J), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Six cars! And one of the Jordans already has difficulties!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

worst. episode. ever.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Dom, are the exchanges giving odds on the number of people left in the stadium by the end?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I tell you what, those Americans sure can throw a bottle a long distance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

ooh paul stoddart blaming jordan!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Please let ITV screen the repeat as planned.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

haha, they shifted Coronation Street for this!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Indignant Americans!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

better ending for dr who = ecclestone c. regenerates into ecclestone b.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 19 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

F1 had about as good a chance before this weekend of overtaking NASCAR in North America as Darko Milicic winning the MVP of the NBA Finals. Between this and Bernie's comments about Ms. Patrick, forget it. F1 has shot itself in the foot in America far too many times now to save face.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Sunday, 19 June 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

unafraid to open a can of worms, alan smelled a rat and nipped it in the bud

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Heh. Look, before Indy, F1 was subjugated to the parking lot at Caesar's Palace and PHOENIX. Trashing the only open wheel driver anyone in America knows while alternately putting on a race so bad, F1 fans in the US asked where they could find NASCAR on the dial, yeah, that's pretty much it stateside for what was a cult sport to begin with.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I need a touch more context here with all this. Did something go down live on the air? Where and what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Basically, the teams on Michelin tyres refused to take part in the race unless a chicane was added to the track to slow it down. Ferrari and F1 officials rejected this proposal, so although all 22 cars lined up to start the race, 16 of them retired after the warm-up lap and it was run entirely with 6 cars.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Hahah, oh dear.

A story I've found.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

The crowd goes wild!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

A smash success:

Michael Schumacher bested five other cars on the track to win his first event of the season. It was his third consecutive victory in the U.S. Grand Prix and fourth in the six years it has been held at Indy.

But it will forever be tainted. He was booed on the podium, the traditional champagne celebration was canceled, and the public address announcer implored the few remaining fans in attendance to stop throwing things.

“Bit of a strange Grand Prix,” Schumacher said. “Not the right way to win my first one this year.”

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

“Bit of a strange Grand Prix,” Schumacher said.

He's not one for overstating things, is he?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Now if only this would happen at the Melbourne GP! Then maybe people would think it sucked, and move it back to Adelaide.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

(I live near the racetrack at Albert Park Lake, it is a loud and annoying weekend to endure).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

One upshot is the highlights programme has had half an hour lopped off it, which has been replaced with 'ITV Sport Classics', a compilation of highlights from World Of Sport. Most notable for featuring a segment where Jimmy Case kicks a football at Ian St John, causing St John to bellow "Jimmy YOU TWAT!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

but the guy celebrating his third place win with his champagne pouring while the two ferrari winners walked off was classic.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 20 June 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he was psyched! Not even Americans-who-demand-refunds could bring him down. I caught this on the highlights and it was just silly, esp. the Ferrari near-collision. I sympathized with all of the drivers and thought Rubens was most OTM in his post-race interview.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 20 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Haha Ste, I was just about to post that. Bless him, only podium he'll ever get!
x-post

My friend's description of it made it sound like Ralph Wiggum when he won the diorama prize with his Star Wars figures

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 20 June 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

I just saw this on the news, haha so funny. Dudes throwing beer cans onto the track and the cars hitting them! Man.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

the hour leading up to the race was fascinating though, ailsa otm upthread about brundle, he was great questioning a bewildered looking ecclestone
