mixed emotions here i'm afraid.

incredibly rude? sure okay.
a tiny minority spoiling the fun for everyone else? possibly.
funny? i'd say so.

Nah, just a bunch of wankers behaving like wankers I'm afraid.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

haha

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Very subtly formatted, this:

Science fiction

He proposed to the 26-year-old actress on top of the Eiffel Tower, presenting her with a huge diamond ring.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

A man was then taken inside the cinema by security guards.

...and given a good talking-to, no doubt.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 19 June 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Asked about further details of the wedding, Cruise said: "There is going to be a wedding. We don't know when, we don't know where."

..."and we havent quite decided who will get married, but we're working on it. I like that Ethan Hawke. He should play me some time."

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

oh, i hate tom cruise, but i hate these 'pranksters' even more, especially the way they couldn't even argue for what they were doing...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

and people wonder why kids go about happyslapping.

government, delete channel 4 please.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

you know, parachute those chaps down in the middle of, say, the christchurch estate in tulse hill on a friday night. try their water squirting antics then and see if any of them get out alive.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Nice Cruise macking on Johannson first story here:

Almoist as if he was in the market for a hot you beard/actress.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Have just been home and seen this on the news, tom didn’t take it to well.
Can’t blame him though, I’d be a little pissed off with em. It’s not like it was a classic wind-up taking months to plan or anything.

If I had tom’s money, I’d employ some people to get medieval on the pranksters.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think Cruise came off considerably better than the guy mumbling "... was a practical joke... "

At least put your heart in it, water squirting guy! Jeez.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

When the prankster offered an excuse after the stunt, Cruise angrily said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?"

The joker went to walk away but Cruise said: "Don't run away."

"That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."

Cruise then said: "You're a jerk ... jerk ... you're a jerk."

Careful Tom! the engrams are building up!!!

Am0n, Monday, 20 June 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on, it was a prank. It's not like there's any real *damage*. It's just a bit of water. I think that's less damage than making an ass of yourself on Oprah. (Then again, it was clever: jumping up 'n' down will take the attention away from the fact he didn't want to answer any questions.)

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm not holding a torch for Cruise here, but the sort of people who engage in orgafun pranks tend to also handily able to called 'cunts' (cf: office japsters, people who pulled chairs away from you at school, hide clothes etc).

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Exactly. Take the Dennis Pennis blueprint, remove any minute traces of wit and all the terrbile puns, and all you're left with is some no-mark acting like a cunt.

Before you know it people will start saying 'wacky' on TV again.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

"I HAPPYSQUIRTED OMNIPOTENT CRUISEY"

Mark wins

But you can't remove those wit and puns, because that's what makes Dennis Pennis. Actually I wasn't a big fan of him, nor of other pranksters. I think I just don't want to defend Tom Cruise. He seems devoid of any humour and actually underneath it all rather smug. As if he doesn't deserve to be squirted on because he's Tom Cruise.

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha "underneath it all"! Tom Cruise beams smugness the same way that lamps beam light.

-- nathalie's post modern sleaze fest

You can argue that there's no real lasting "damage" resulting from a lot of things, but does that really make them OK to do? Tom didn't even know these people. Is it OK for some random guys you never met to soak you with water at any time?

sleep (sleep), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I think Tom Cruise is a jerk, but the prank was even more jerkish -- it was in fact jerkassed.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

But you can't remove those wit and puns, because that's what makes Dennis Pennis.

That was my point.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

They should've said "Sorry Tom, here -- dry yourself on this" and handed him a towel smeared in black boot polish. Now THAT would've been funny. As it stands, it was rubbish.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

they should have pushed him backwards through a hilarious portal in the space-time continuum then turned into oz-style wheeliemonkeys and sped away hooting

mark s (mark s), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Asked about the incident, Johansson’s momager, Melanie Johansson, referred Radar to a publicist, who did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

Wow, I love that word.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

too bad this didn't happen before johansson's EWS interview creepfest – she could have recited his reaction to it at him verbatim before she politely excused herself

jones (actual), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Haha "underneath it all"! Tom Cruise beams smugness the same way that lamps beam light.

hehe That was my point.

I dunno, I find that cake-thrower - I think he's belgian actually - to be more offensive. It's just water, it'll dry, but having to walk around with cream on yer clothes. Urgh. It's hot now, so I'd be glad to have some water splashed on me. ;-))

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

haha, should have expected that. you get the point!
