Why Cable News Must Be Killed, Part VI

Pretty interesting if depressing interview with a former CNN foreign correspondent.

... It's been made very clear by [CEO] Dick Parsons and other people at the top of what is now called Time Warner again that CNN is a product like any other product in the Time Warner family of products, be it MAD Magazine or whatever movie studio. It might as well be toothpaste. The idea was profit maximization. Within that, there was less and less room for the kind of journalism that says, we need to inform the citizens of our country with things that are just necessary for them to know, even if that means that on a particular night the ratings on Fox might be a little higher.

TL: Why do you think CNN International is different? I recently reviewed it for CJR Daily, and it's a far more sophisticated show.

RM: They're going to a global audience. And they're treating their audience as an intelligent audience that wants to be informed about world affairs. They're not treating the American audience that way.

This guy should be lanced like the liberal boil that he is.

Watching CNN International is so weird. I always feel like, "Do your bosses know you're doing this?"

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

It somehow managed to feel overly long and yet rushed at the same time.

Oh, you mean a FEMINIST! Jesus, that explains everything. A liberal carpet muncher, stifling real journalism.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Of course, there are more interestiong issues here than the ones I am lamely parodying. I'm tired. Going to bed.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

I was trying to think of a face-sitting joke to go with your "stifling real journalism"...

I just realized I posted a piece of the Batman thread instead of the one I meant to post. I really am going to bed this time.

Sorry, Duke, I was distracted. What is it you do now?
