What know ye of Halifax, Nova Scotia?

For compliated reasons I am thinking of travelling there from Ireland to get married late this summer. Tell me about Halifax, other than the "it's great" snippets I've picked up from other threads.

Also, is it easy to get married fast in Canada?

if you think that it's cold when you're swimming in the ocean, it's hard to believe you're a nova scotian...

yeah, all i know about it is sloan lyrics. i've flown over and it's beautiful, though!

What do you want to know about it?

As for weddings, if you were both Canadians you could certainly do a legal wedding fast enough.

I want to know if it's a stupid idea to get married there. It looks nice enough from all the pictures I've seen of it, but of course all the pictures I've seen are trying to get me to go there, so they would focus on the positive. And I like that maritimey vibe, with the museums and boat trips and wildlife and all that jazz. But it could be like Martha's Vineyard when you get there - overpriced and really boring and with only one nice view, which is where all the photos are taken. Is it?

From what I can gather from various advice websites (mostly aimed at gay people), it's really easy to get married in Canada. You apply for a marriage license and wait five days and then you take your marriage license to a justice of the peace and he/she marries you, and you're done. But I suppose what I'm wondering is, once you get your license is there usually a huge waiting list? Is it expensive to hire one of these people to perform your wedding? These are the things it's hard to find answers to.

No.

I couldn't tell you having never been involved in a marriage in Halifax, but I can't see how it would be. Give the tourist 1-800 line a phone call.

Halifax is many things but over priced is not one of them. The hotels are for the region expensive but on par with central Ontario and New Engerland but cheaper then say Toronto, Montreal or even New Orleans. If you want a cheap place to stay try across the bay in Dartmouth which has more then a few budget hotels/motels which are more then servicable. Dartmouth has some nice parks and lakes but really it's just Halifax's bitch/suburb.
You probably won't find Halifax building's old as most of the city was leveled in the Halifax Explosion in 1917. The Citadel is pretty impressive, we don't have too many forts surviving from the 19th century like that. But if you got castles and keeps scattered through out the countryside I'm not sure a 19th century fort on hill is going to float your boat.
Halifax is the regional hub and there are some really nice places around it in Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove is a little bit out of the city and The Cabot Trail comes highly recomended. Kim may have some pictures of ocean from there.

Thanks Rufus. This is just the kind of talk I like to hear. It's off to the Vital Statistics phone lines for me.

The long-range Summer weather outlook for the region looks pretty good: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/outlooks/seasonal/index.htm (scroll down)

When I was last there a year ago, Point Pleasant Park had been decimated by Hurricane Juan. It should be reopened since late last summer, and it might be worth checking out. The harbor walk is sort of nice, and as small cities go its pretty laid back and nice. Its cheap and relaxing, if a little boring after a while.

Traveling down south shore is sort of nice (which is what I'll be doing, visiting family near Bridgewater). I haven't been there since I was very young, but as I remember it Cape Breton is wonderful this time of year (I used to have family in Baddeck). Majestic landscapes etc. for wedding type stuff I guess.

Well it IS great. Being from "the centre of the Universe", which is how Toronto is derisively referred to by other Canadians, we (Torontonians) are often accused of not being to appreciate other parts of the country, but I adore Halifax. I've only been twice, but it's a beautiful city, especially in the summer.

As mentioned upthread, the Cabot trail is spectacular, Cape Breton is a must see, and if you're going to be there in August check out the Busker festival which happens down on the waterfront. In spite of the fact that it's a pretty small city, there are 5 universities and the students keep the place vibrant. It also means that there are a lot of bars. Maybe my favourite thing about Halifax is the people. They're incredibly nice and down-to-earth. For example, when you jaywalk in Halifax, cars slow down and drivers smile and wave you across the street. To my knowledge, that doesn't happen anywhere else in the country, and certainly in none of the big cities.

You guys, I am getting more and more enthusiastic about this. The Halliburton hotel (unfortunate name) and its "do not disturb" package looks like the ideal place to spend the wedding night.

So, when I have a date, does anyone want to come and be our second witness? We already have one.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

I know not that hotel, but the price is about what I remember and the address puts you within walking distance of all that is cool and fun except the casino and the commons. I think you're one block from Sping Garden, the governors house, pier 21, the train station and a couple of old graveyards. I think St James is where all the Titanic folks are buried.

Halifax really really likes to party, I forgot to mention that. SMU, Dal, St V, TUNS, Kings and NASCAD are all there and the cabaret license runs you until 4am.

Halifax really really likes to party

Really? Aw, crap. I fucking hate to party. I am not kidding. Still, they'll all be young 'uns and maybe they'll just stay out of my way.

I had a great conversation with the woman in the marriage license place today. I asked her to confirm the documentation I would need and she asked if I had been previously married. Yes, I told her. "And your... partner?" she asked. "Have... they been married before?"
"No," I said, "but I like the way you don't assume it's a man. That's top."
"Well, in the last year or so. You know."
My betrothed's lack of a driver's license shocked this woman more than the idea that I might marry a woman. If I believed in a god, I would have it bless Canada.

'it'? Ah yes, you're avoiding 'him'.

two months pass...
I have just got married in Halifax, today. It was brilliant. The sun split the stones and we got married in the public gardens. We said hello to the CBC workers on lockout as we passed by. Last week we went down to Long Island and Brier Island and saw whales, right and humpback. After the ceremony today we went on a cruise around the harbour, then went to Chives for dinner. It was the best wedding ever!

Halifax is BLOODY GREAT.

Thanks all.

I do like it a lot here. Halifax has a fine fair trade cafe and some very good bars.

Being married rocks. Accentmister also rocks.

OMG I can't believe no one has posted lyrics to Hampton Grease Band's incomparable pinnacle of a song, Halifax" !!!!!!!

Well, I can't find them online, but trust me they are rad. "Wouldn't you like to come to HALIFAX? Air masses moving eastwardly." "You can worship at the church of your choice." "Six thousand six, hundred and thirty-eight, miles of graded road. And a lot of gravel too!"

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

"The telegraph systems/Are owned and operated/By the central government!"

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Um this sounds like a song I need to hear. Um. Can you make that happen?

Casuistry, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yah! Will upload it. It's over 19 minutes long!

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Here it is! Wouldn't you like to come to Halifax?

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

it blew up like a hundred years ago or so and they send boston a christmas tree every year. that's all i got on halifax.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

i went there once, when my ENTIRE family decided it would be a good idea take a vacation to Nova Scotia. It was alright. I got some comics, ate in a good Greek restaurant, and found a To Live & Shave In LA CD at an otherwise crappy CD store for $3.

ian, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Now that is a song.

fifteen years pass...

we’re going up there next week. hoping for (1) rain to put out these fires west of the city, (2) lots of puffin sightings, and (3) the black flies don’t eat us alive.

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Tuesday, 30 May 2023 18:58 (three years ago)

all goals achieved. *extremely* friendly town. one person apologized to me at an intersection for being maybe six inches over the crosswalk. another gave me a cup of coffee after i confirmed the shop wasn’t taking credit cards and had no cash — she also wanted to give me a bottled water, which i had to refuse. pretty much everywhere we went was lovely though one day in the cabot trail the fog rolled in and i had to white-knuckle my way up and down some mountains, which is not my jam. puffins are, though. glorious to finally see them in person.

Damn, I missed your original post. I've never been there, but I would have urged you to watch this before going:
