When: This Friday, June 24. Time TBD.
Where: Hidden Cove, 5336 N. Lincoln Ave.
Why: KARAOKE, DUDE.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

C'mon! Be excited!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, please sing "steppin' out" and/or "sailing" by christopher cross

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

omg "steppin' out," i would totally do that.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

i think n/a should do "we belong to the city"

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

i think kenan and sarah should do a duet of 'under pressure' (sarah will be freddy mercury)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

is it a korean place?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

no. but it is surrounded by korean places.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm excited! BOo ya!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Post Your Hidden Cove Review (2 Total)

justin says:
On Thursday 6/2/05 2:23 PM
I love the Hidden Cove but I brought 4 of my friends from the Chicago Bandits up there to party after their inagural game and you guys didn't have the Grease Medley? Dineane freaked out and I think the pressure of her being a professional softball player got to her and she apologizes for breaking the machine.
I love the hidden cove.

Ned says:
On Sunday 9/15/02 9:57 AM
So, I was having my usual at the Cove Friday nite, enjoying most patrons, but especially the sassy brunette who sang Aretha Franklin's "Think", When to the bar's chagrin a fight broke out.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the show, I couldn't help but notice that you threw the wrong girl out of the bar. In fact the 80's throw-back with the pink half-shirt was so obnoxious, the bartenders
should have bought a round for the girl who finally busted her grill. Kudos to the fiery vixen, whoever she is!!!! The throw-back, let's call her..."tammy" hence forth...was the worst kind

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I will not allow anyone else to be Freddie Mercury.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

No, on second thought, I'd be a lousy Freddie Mercury. What am I thinking.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Sarah how can this be, I thought you guys were coming up to Wisconsin this weekend

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

They're leaving on Sat.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc is vrai.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I can attend this. I'm all socialized out, and I just need some time away for awhile. It's a weird feeling.

Who knows what will happen though.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

hey jeff, congrats (again).

i'm happy you've chosen a karaoke place that's sort of out of the way, rather than in wrigleyville or something. what time are you going to show up? i think i can make it.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

i think we should get there (relatively) early, because i have a feeling it may get crowded on weekends.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

OK, guys. I'm really sorry, I know I've been lurking around a while and no-one's met me yet... but I can't go. I already had tentative plans, and I really am pretty broke. Now the tentative plans have solidified. So, if they somehow dissolve I'll be there, but otherwise it'll have to be another time for me (preferably sometime after the middle of next week when I get paid.)

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Aw, okay. Another time!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Thanks ama, we should hang out again, before you leave in the fall. It was nice to see you again.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

so does early mean like 8 PM or 9 PM or what?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I say it means 8:30. Eh?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Songs I want to sing:
"Cherry Pie" by Warrant
"I've Had the Time of My Life (Theme from Dirty Dancing)" sung as a duet with Sarah

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

If they don't have those songs, I will just sing the lyrics for those songs over the background music for "American Pie" or whatever.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

KARAOKE MASH-UP!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Sure, 8:30 is fine with me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm taking the day off work, so I'm gonna practice at home all day.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

That was an xpost.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

or WAS it

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I embrace my lamer status.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Do YOU?

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

part of me just wants to keep dan hanging, to reinforce it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

PEOPLE PEOPLE Let's get our shit together.
me
Sarah
jaymc
amateurist
are all definitely coming.
dan m.
definitely not coming.
Awaiting confirmation from:
Kenan (dude, we can give you a ride)
deej. (we need to meet you, and drunken crooning may be the best introduction)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I tried to get Ben to come along by saying, "Oh, don't worry about it! I'm totally not going to sing either! We'll just laugh at everyone else!" but Nick ruined it by saying, "What??! You are too going to sing!!" and scared him away.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I saw Jeff and Jenny last night and they said they might come by.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

YOU BETTER FUCKING SING, MCLUSKY.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I would LOVE to come tonight guys, but with my moving expenses and such, I shouldn't even buy a single beer.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

QUIT BEING A PUSSY

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

jaymc and I are being karaoke bullies.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I, Jaymc, will personally buy you a beer.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

"Kool Thing" (sung by a couple from the table next to us) was pretty funny because the lyrics never actually came up, even though the music played. So the cute girl with fishnets (Caitlin) (the one who sang "The Tide is High" and "Superstar") just kind of made it up, or sang it from memory. The Chuck D part was pretty slipshod, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 June 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Jenny was also going to do Ana Ng but we all left before it came up.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 25 June 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

OMG Wicked Game!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I missed you guys. The "birthday party" turned out to be dinner at a sushi restaurant, so I dropped a wad of cash anyway. I'd have been much happier with you guys.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

jaymc did you mack on the cute girl with the fishnets?

i was sort of scared off by "tits" and her boyfriend. who wasn't?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

i would have done "kool thing" if i had known it was on the list before it was already like 11:30.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

i would have done the "simple men" dance too.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

"tits"?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

sorry, fake-tits girl and her creepo boyfriend. they of the "grease" song and "i will survive," etc.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

oh. i didn't really pay much attention to them. i think she was the birthday girl, maybe?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

unless i'm thinking of someone else...

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I've got to learn some lyrics before we go back again. I wil sing next time.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, pish-posh. I don't know lyrics to anything. That's why they have them on the screen.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

But I don't even know how the songs really go beyond the chorus. I would just be freestyling. I really want to do Tempted by Squeeze.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

no, she wasn't the birthday girl. ask jenny about it.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

She had very buoyant breasts. Some might say unnaturally buoyant.

Speaking of me getting hit on by a married couple, an older lady in an unfortunate shirt that resembled a maternity top came over to Jeff and me to inform us that she could read lips and that she had thereby "heard" Jeff asking me why that old pregnant lady was drinking beer. What Jeff had really said was "What is she wearing?" I managed to get us out of that uncomfortable situation with my amazing social skills, at which point she told me that she and her husband though I was cute and they could tell I was wild in bed.

Imagine, barely married a week and already invited to swing!

I will sing Anna Ng next time, for real.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

do your "amazing social skills" consist of looking awkwardly at the ceiling? because that is the skill i would have employed in such a situation.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Not at first, but that's the tried and true tactic I invoked when she started talking about my sexual prowess.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

i think i spotted that woman earlier, was she the one sitting with the mustach'ed guy who sang the hootie song?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I have some EXCEEDINGLY TERRIBLE photos of this FAP that may eventually get posted.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

uggggggggh

I wasn't feeling well that night, I can't imagine how bad my pictures are.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Jeff, I had no idea you didn't feel well until you said something about it.

I was all proud of getting the guts to sing, but when I told my mom she was like, "Uh-huh. And HOW many drinks did that take?" Just one, because I'm a lightweight, but STILL.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Nick, post pics pls.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I can't right now, they're on the computer at home. Sorry.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

SO. JEALOUS.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I karaoke.

My favorite karoake place is KARAOKE BOX in SOHO, London. It's like an after hours crack den!

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

you are under standing order not to post photos of me.

oh and: kittens hugs etc.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

calm down, nobody's going to rob you of your most-mysterious-ilxor title.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember there being any kittens at karaoke. :-(

Pancakes for Breakfast (coco), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

what do you think was in those puffs that jeff and jenny's friend was eating?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I want to know what sort of stuff Jesse swallows.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to keep posting that photo for as long as i keep finding it funny.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

i'm not trying to be mysterious, i just have a phobia about having my picture taken. it's longstanding.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

really?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

any chance those photos are going back up so the rest of us can see all the fun we missed? also, was joe jackson's "breakin us in two" in the karaoke catalogue? what about asia "heat of the moment"? because those songs are tooootally in my range. my three or four note range.

The Landlord's Daughter (The Landlord's Daughter), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

i had a nice time and all, but i don't think i'm really into karaoke.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

any chance those photos are going back up so the rest of us can see all the fun we missed?

I think they will be. Nick just hasn't put them up yet.

also, was joe jackson's "breakin us in two" in the karaoke catalogue?

It wasn't. I specifically looked for Joe Jackson, but they didn't have any. :(

Great song, tho! Have you heard the Mandy Moore version?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

I would sing, but there is never enough Bobby Vinton.

Other artists I would like to see more of in karaoke song books:

Old 97s
Scott Walker
Leonard Cohen
Tom Waits
Peter Gabriel
Autechre

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Btw, Jeff, I think my Scott Walker article is going up on Thursday. I finished it last night.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

rats! no joe jackson? that's heresy. i feel compelled to add that while i talk a tough karaoke talk, i'm a total puss when it comes time to get up there. alcohol doesn't help, although being among strangers does.

i haven't heard the mandy moore version - is it as groany as her other songs?

The Landlord's Daughter (The Landlord's Daughter), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

In the interests of making things seem way more debauched than they were, and in the interest of protecting amateurist's anonymity, I am only posting the blurriest photos.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

haha.

the first three, for newbies, are me, n/a, and sarah, respectively.

i really like that last one, though. the blurry lights are awesome!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Goldurnit.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

ha, i'm on the right. I look damn good blurry.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

the mandy version isn't that bad! it's one of the better songs on coverage. better than "senses working overtime," at any rate.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why I even bothered wearing my glasses. I mean the "I love Rock n Roll" refrain goes on for like 3/4 of the song.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

oh, i wasn't hating on mandy...i just wanted to sing that song. and so you can be sure that i'm not a mutant, here is a blurry photo of me sitting in the signature room the one and only time i was there:

The Landlord's Daughter (The Landlord's Daughter), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
omg "steppin' out," i would totally do that.
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), June 20th, 2005 12:24 PM. (jaymc) (link)

I almost did "Steppin' Out" at the Four Treys on Saturday.

hey, um, i'm kinda new around here and, well, i live in chicago and would be up for some karaoke if i didn't already have plans for tonight. there will be other outings? do you welcome outlanders?
-- The Landlord's Daughter (handymand...), June 24th, 2005 1:31 PM. (The Landlord's Daughter) (link)

Is this Amanda's first post?!?

I don't think I want to know what sort of stuff Jesse swallows.
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), June 27th, 2005 4:17 PM. (jaymc) (link)

This still stands.
