banana face (banana face), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

No. No one ever has.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

i've never been to chicago!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

nope

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I like how Robert Plant yells "GO TO CHICAGO" in "When The Levee Breaks". I don't understand it, but I like it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

What's to understand? It's a perfectly reasonable thing to ask of people.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Banana face - can I call you Banana face? - I've been there. I'm there now! Crazy!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I like how Robert Plant yells "GO TO CHICAGO" in "When The Levee Breaks". I don't understand it, but I like it.

it's a cover of a song by memphis minnie (a blues singer) about the disastrous 1927 flood of the mississippi delta area, where lots of people lost their homes and possessions. a lot of them ended up going to chicago to rebuild their lives. the floods basically quickened the pace of the migration northward of many southern blacks, and a lot of them (most of them from mississippi) ended up in chicago.

there, now i feel helpful.

lovely!

rainy (rainy), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

second one's very nice

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

would it be inaccurate to describe Chicago as midway (ha) between New York and Cleveland (at least in appearance)?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I really like that 2nd one! I can't wait to move to Chicago!

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Thank you. I like that second one, too. My first year in Chicago was spent temping in many buildings, and always bringing my camera for lots of different views of downtown. That second one is what people mean when they say Chicago is a museum of skyscraper architecture.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Or architecture, period.

I love the way that in my neighborhood, some of the new houses going up are... well, some are crap, but some are these gorgeous modernist Philip Johnson-looking things with enormous windows and flat roofs and mixed materials and such. Impressive.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

parts of chicago, like logan square, look a *lot* like cleveland. because they were built up in the same era, and the landscape is similar, and etc. not much of chicago really looks or feels like new york to me, although with the expansion of office buildings and condos in and around the loop (on all sides now!) downtown chicago is feeling a lot denser and hence a lot more like midtown manhattan.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. Much of Chicago looks and feels a bit like Brooklyn. Only not quiiiiite as claustrophobic.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

i always think "manhattan" when someone says "new york," if that explains my reasoning at all.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

it IS a lovely skyline. i also like the mix of old and new skyscrapers.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

That's not the skyline, it's one half of the riverfront. The skyline is even better.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

The problem (well one) with Cleveland when comparing it to Chicago is that it completely turned it's back on the lakefront. Looking out my office building I see Browns Stadium, the Rock Hall, a muncipal airport, marinas and an abandoned trade school. I90 runs along the lake as well completely blocking almost the entire eastside from the lake.

eek. when the levee breaks has been one of my "sexy" songs. kinda creeps me out now.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

you don't think destructive flooding is sexxxxy?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

just think of it as a metaphor for menstruation or something.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I got your destructive flooding right here.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

because, you know, nothing's sexier than robert plant singing about the menstrual cycle.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Robert Plant makes everything sexy. There's nothing to be creeped out about. It's Robert Plant. He's sexy. It's ok.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

thank you!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)
