you know, the whole process of coping drugs. going somewhere and buying weed or heroin or coke. has anyone ever done this? i had a freind who used to get dope in Baltimore, but always from people he knew in some way shape or form. does this practice actually exist?

OTR Supastar, Monday, 20 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

In London. In retrospect, a very very stupid idea.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I've been ripped-off 9/10 times I've tried this. I'm lucky I didn't get arrested.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

see, thats what i figured. Ive been reading the punk memoir Please Kill Me, and people talk about waiting in line to buy drugs in the 70s in NYC. I guess it was true then, but i cant imagine that anything like this happens now.

OTR Supastar, Monday, 20 June 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I love SF for that very reason.

Oh those places still exist in the bouroughs, it's just that you'd never, ever want to go to those places lest you wanted to get jacked.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

No, but I did buy oregeno once.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

If I do "Have you ever bought drugs off The Streets?" here, will it forestall the inevitable parody thread?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

We used to buy BEER at a crackhouse in Philly at 3 a.m. years ago. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do. But we were young and drunk. And we wanted to get drunker. Loose cans in garbage bags. Gotta love it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Years ago I lived in this fairly squalid council flat on the top floor of a five storey block. Lift only went to the third floor, then you had to go up a dingy staircase to get to the flat. One evening me and my then Mrs got home to find a group of teenagers skinning up on our doorstep, what with it being a secluded spot and all. Rather than make them feel bad (ha!) I asked if they could get us some. Half an hour later, there's a knock on the door and a kid sells me twenty quid's worth of frankly overpriced resin. We then get a weekly doorstep delivery service for the 12 months until we're evacuated cos the council are pulling the building down.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

It's sort of a mystery to me who buys drugs off the street. First-timers or suburbanites in denial, I guess -- but they're not enough to keep the dealers on the block. There must be regular users who buy off the street, but I don't know anyone who does this, or why anyone would.

Aaron A., Monday, 20 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Repeat after me kids - BODEGA.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I once got drunk and asked everyone if they had any crack because i thought it was funny.

This guy led me to the bathroom and asked how much i wanted

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I bet delivery service has a lot to do with the dissapearance of dealers on the block as well.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

There's no crack delivery service is there?

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

BODEGA

aka smoke shops. usually set up like a dummy deli/grovery store, you'd have to buy a bag of chips or bottle of juice as cover for your pot. dime bags of sense or jamaican. there was a big crackdown sometime in the 80s and I haven't bought weed on the street since.

when I lived in the East Village these nervous scraggly-looking guys sold beat weed on the corner, junkies looking to make their score.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I wouldn't doubt it.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

regional, yes, but not national or global AFAIK (xpost)

Aaron A., Monday, 20 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Problem with crack delivery is that the delivery boy would be running backwards and forwards like a motherfucker.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

There's usually a guy in front of Amsterdam Houses trying to sell crack. Which seems like a terrible idea since there was a bust/stabbing there a few months ago.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

people talk about waiting in line to buy drugs in the 70s in NYC.

Uh, it was true still just a few years ago. People would sit in broad daylight on stoops and there would be a line. You pay the guy on the stairs and walk over to another guy in a wrestling mask under a car who hands you the dope!

NY is a strange place!

Stoner Guy, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

when I first moved to SF and lived on the corner of Haight/Ashbury and didn't know anybody, yeah I bought weed on the street fairly often for about a year. never really got "ripped off" per se, but it was creepy to buy weed from junkies who just wanted the money so they could go cop smack at 16th and Mission.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

what about pills? i read an article about how incredibly easy it was to get oxycontin and vicodin on the streets of SF. is that true or hype?

OTR Supastar, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

i have bought weed on the street before, but not since moving to NY. there are dudes in washington square (and i imagine other places) offering dimes, etc.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Back in HS we would buy weed in and around Washington Square Park. It was so easy. Tens of dealers clamoring for our business.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Theres a venue where my band plays sometimes and its teeming with hookers anc crack dealers.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but like was mentioned earlier, you're going to get ripped off, or arrested. Everytime I've done it, I've just been shit drunk and looking for coke. At least I've found some new contacts this way, where at least i know their okay for future purchases.

hi, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

"what about pills? i read an article about how incredibly easy it was to get oxycontin and vicodin on the streets of SF. is that true or hype? "

I've never seen it - doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but uh, in my opinion buying a drug product you cannot visually verify as legitimate is really really really stupid.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah, there are always dealers in the parks in manhattan but i wouldn't trust any of 'em. dave lee roth and the dell dude to thread.

People would sit in broad daylight on stoops

A couple of weeks ago I bought some grass from a "street vendor" in Vancouver. It was a pleasant exchange and not nearly as creepy as I remember such activities being when I was a teenager and trying to do the same in New Orleans. Can we get a round of applause for BC's lax marijuana laws?

Will(iam), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

so how's the quality of life in vancouver these days?

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

A few months ago I was in the Bronx, near Fordham Rd with some friends. We were walking down some street and this dude just opened the door of his building and yelled "I GOT THAT HAZE!" and slammed the door again.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

i bought 15d this way regularly off haight st. in the early 90's, and never got ripped off. i'd never do this now it seems like insanity.

Got some weed outside of Clapham North tube on the way home to Brixton one night a couple years ago. Price was OK but quality was SHIT. Good skunk my ASS - all shake. Had much better luck on Bloor Street in Toronto one night - walking along with a friend, both happened to be thinking about getting weed at some point, and a skater kid comes up and asks if we want a dime bag. Now THAT'S service! Good stuff, too. We had home delivery as well, but this was a nice bonus.

With same friend when he got some coke in a bathroom here in London. There's certainly no shortage of guys in Shoreditch clubs saying "Charlie? Pills?". I'm not a coke person so I have no idea if it was good or not - he seemed to think it was OK.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

so how's the quality of life in vancouver these days?

it was my first time and I was only there for 4.5 days, but the city gets top marks from me. Beautiful, clean (I saw two city employees picking up used needles around Victory Square) and some excellent used book stores. And you know, "smoke friendly" coffee shops.

Will(iam), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

If you know something about where couriers gather, you can be in for a nice treat in London. I'm sure that courier-watch rule goes for every other city too.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I've sold weed on the street before.

I had a guy insist on giving me some home made mdma because I gave him some change for the sky train in Vancouver.

I accepted almost a half quater of mushrooms from a complete stranger after we'd rolled a blunt together (at no cost whatsoever) because I was bored.

But no, I've never BOUGHT drugs off the street.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

sure, many times. St. Marks between 1st & A in New York was a good spot, and I never got ripped off. Just smell it first. In the early '90s there was a great juice bar there that sold FAT dime bags as well.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

haha why is it that middle class kids always say that thing bout couriers heheh thems the tightest mofos haha

P4r4dise Cafe, Camden - close to Mornington Crescent. You could get an 8-gar with your kebab. Nice.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

You pay the guy on the stairs and walk over to another guy in a wrestling mask under a car who hands you the dope!

so
a)no marked money on the bag man
b)you don't see the bag man's face
c)stakeout cops can't see who hands you the bag

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Is he under the car like he's changing the oil? In a wrestling mask?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine used to go to hippie hill near haight to get weed and eventually got a regular connection through someone there. I dont have alot of experience, but they seem to be always selling weed (not oregano or whatever) but they jack you with quantities.

I was driving home from breakfast one day on Venice and Lincoln on the westside and had some weird old dude pull up in this handpainted car. Guy was like:
"want a cigar?"
"want a cigarette?"
"want a joint?"
"want some mushrooms?"

I turned him down every time because I had no idea what he was up to. Like was he just gonna throw the shit into my car or was he going to lead me to some crazy weed den? I kinda regret not following up on that one.

I got a super solid weed + tabs man within an hour of hitting the streets in MTL, still have his number and he is 100% reliable. NYC I found shit really easy too except for the one time the Ricans almost jumped me (to be fair, I did insult him on his block the evening of the PR day parade...lol silly). Usually I never get shit off the street but if I'm ever forced to I'm 95% successful, I guess scumbags can sense each others' scumbagitude pretty well, regardless of locale. I'm so happy I'm a scumbag!
