Films of the Year

I was frankly baffled yesterday to read that Sight and Sounds writers had voted Amores Perros their film of the year. It's not bad, but I think if it had been made in English and set in LA it would have been casually dismissed as a sloppy Tarantino tribute; I'm not sure what agenda has elevated it. My choice would have been Together - but I know that I missed a lot of interesting movies this year, not least George Washington. What was your film of the year, and which ones might we have missed which you would recommend getting out on video in Spring 2002?

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone nominating Moulin Rouge will be spanked...

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ghostworld, AI, Asoka.

james, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

considrering that Moulin Rouge was the best film of the year ...

anthonyeaston, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you looking for some kind of spanking Anthony?

My film ignorance has finally got to the point where I have honestly not seen a single film I enjoyed this year. Oh I saw Crouching thingy in January but that came out end of December didnt it?

Tom, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Man Who Wasn't There.

Even if it is two words shy of a Travis-ty.

Trevor, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Amores Perros would easily be in my top five, as would Together - but I haven't really considered the subject yet as it is not the end of the year. Amorres Perros is also a bit of a sentimental choice for me because it reminds me of the time I spent in Mexico CIty in 2000 (where it was all over the place and the only Mexican film competing with the likes of X-Men). I do think it is unfair to call it a Tarrentino rip merely because of its portmanteau structure, in manyw ways its more of a Three Colours take (look at those plot similarities). Equally because I liked Show Me Love so much I think I am again too attached to Together.

Its been an interesting year, if not a great one, for movies. I wanted to like Moulin Rouge but didn't really. Ditto in many ways Amelie's tweeness has irritated me too much after the fact. I think Crouching Tiger (which I saw on New Years Day) probably has the most lasting effect of the big movies of the year. Of the little, ickle movies - I really like The Lowdown. But I'll return when I have considered this further.

Pete, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MY TOP FIVE Moulin Rouge
The Rape/Tango to Roxeanne. The Celver sense of irony turned inside out. The Discourse on Pop Music. The Clever and at the End moving allusions (Victorian Melodrama, Orpheous,Busby Berkely, Even Guy Debord) and the fact it had this yonic lushness that just blew me away .
Ocean Eleven

MY TOP FIVE Moulin Rouge
The Rape/Tango to Roxeanne. The Celver sense of irony turned inside out. The Discourse on Pop Music. The Clever and at the End moving allusions (Victorian Melodrama, Orpheous,Busby Berkely, Even Guy Debord) and the fact it had this yonic lushness that just blew me away .
Ocean Eleven
It moves in these loops, the way that the charchters interact is so smooth and well oiled, the machienry of film comes into question, the cast clooney and pitt smooth and elegant beside the pool, the aristo carl reiner plays, bernie mac and matt damon. eleven charchter studies in a dense rube goldberg genre twist
The Others
Ghosts are unresolved tortues made corparal
The Score
Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro in a Diner , the cold blue steel of whos tryign to fuck who and one great switchback endding
IT WAS A SHIT YEAR FOR MOVIES, I SEE A MOVIE A WEEK AND CAN ONLY THINK OF FOUR

anthony, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Josie and The Pussycats, for the soundtrack CD if nothing else.

Graham, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would include that actually .

anthony, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and i suspect i could add the anniversary party if i see it.

anthony, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I did like Amores Perros. Does 'In the Mood for Love' count as this year or last year? I forget, so I'll say that until someone informs me I've got the wrong year... I see lots of press screenings, so my memory of when I saw things is quite scuppered. I saw 'Together' in 2000, so it can't be my film of the year, but I loved it. Who's seen 'Fucking Am

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Score was pretty poor, it was obvious what was going to happen, the double crossing merely existed for these two actors to two and outdo each other but the material wasn't there. Made to look alright by Mamet's Heist - which was appalling. So many twists that you did not care or even trust the narrative.

The Others was a taut well made ghost story, but a bit Tales Of The Unexpected and it lacked the depth of emotion I expected. Good turn by Eric Sykes though. The Devil's Backbone is a better ghost story.

I really liked both of the Robert Gelguidan movies this year - especially A L'Attaque (imagine Ken Loach taking the piss out of himself). Oh, and Requiem For a Dream/Traffic (we get all the Oscar fayre in Jan / Feb y'see).

Pete, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

brotherhood of the wolf by a fkn mile

, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Battle Royale was the only film this year that i am aware of to feature detonation collars so that wins hands down in my book (followed by The Man Who Wasn't There and Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon).

Jonnie, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But have you seen 'Marius et Jeannette', Pete? That was decidedly average, I thought, and has put me off him ever since

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5 best:
Mulholland Drive
Ghost World
Amelie
In the Mood for Love
Iron Monkey

5 worst:
Harry Potter
Waking Life
Memento
K-Pax
A.I.
Oceans 11 is probably horrible 2 and LOtR is going to make Star Wars its BITCH

chaki, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Harry Potter and Pokémon 3.

my name is sarah i am 8 i eat EG on BRED, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Others. I'm welling up just thinking about it, and it's not even a sad film. No, scrub that, it's an incredibly sad film.
2. Battle Royale
3. Ghostworld
4. Together
5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (came out here in January)
6. Dark Days (doc about homeless people living in underground New York, again, came out in UK in 2001)
7. The Low Down.

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" closely followed by "Harry Potter."

Andrew Williams, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

worst films this year are Jeepers Creepers and the Fast and the Furious.

james, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, Trousers and Tag in agreement shock. "Together" was marvellous. Amelie had the requisite feelgood factor in times of trouble. I'd also go for Moulin Rouge (just for Jim Broadbent's "Like a Virgin"). Tears of the Black Tiger was a welcome dose of technicolour insanity. Ghost World was good, although not quite as good as I'd hoped. Crouching Todger, Hide the Salami was OK apart from the twat who talked through a large part of it on his mobile. The things you see when you ain't got your gun. Was Almost Famous this year? That too.

Has anyone seen Maelstrom? And? Haven't seen Storytelling either.

My, Roman Polanski's been busy.

Tag

Tag, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah - Almost Famous. I loved that. Was baffled by the brickbats it received from certain quarters. I'm going to have to see Moulin Rouge again before I can decide about it. Emphatically not for Jim Broadbent's 'Like A Virgin' though.

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Traffic... and that's about it. (Crouching Tiger is technically this year, but I already counted in my 2000 Best Of list)

This has been an abysmal year for movies - so many disappointments, not the least of which were Moulin Rouge and The Man Who Wasn't There. I still haven't seen Ghost World, Mullholland Drive, Legally Blonde or Amores Perros yet, though.

Not bad but overrated: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
Not bad and underrated: The Pledge

Jeff W, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was Shrek this year? That's a good film. And anyone saying Harry Potter is one of the worst films of the year just has a chip on their shoulder :-)

Mark C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Piano Teacher. 2. Code Unknown. 3. Ghost World. 4. Eureka. 5. Amelie.

Andrew L, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Will, I've seen Fucking Amal (Show Me Love) and think its fantastic.

Pete, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Lantana
2) Amelie
3) Tigerland
4) Sexy Beast
5) Series 7
6) The Others
7) Amores Perros
Still need to see The Deep End, The Princess & The Warrior, The Claim, Monsoon Wedding + LOTR and Monsters Inc of course.

Tim, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, Shrek. That at least made me laugh (as, more surprisingly, did Bridget Jones)

I meant to say upthread that my strangest movie experience of the year was "Swordfish", which I saw just days after September 11th.

Jeff W, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot “Best in show” and “At the height of Summer”. I feel such a fool.

“In the mood for love” was last year, but it’s worth mentioning again.

Worst…one of those numerous French films about philosophy lecturers and their tedious midlife crises I’ve had to endure in my line of duty. Come back to me when you’ve got some real problems, Jean- Claude.

Harry Potter…mid-table respectability….entertaining, but not as good as the book. Trousers, I will be holding you to your promise of spanking next time in London. Will there be leather?

Tag, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yes Tag! 'At the Height of Summer' is luuuurvely.

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is 'At the Height of Summer'? Have I seen it? I saw 'The Pinochet Case' the other day, and give it 11 out of 10. Don't forget your Kleenex. Didn't like 'Amelie' very much, apart from the youthful protagonist running downstairs, shot in profile. Don't forget your Kleenex. 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' downed the ante for comedy, especially the gay parents scene. 'Kandahar' was OK, but not a patch on the same director's 'The Silence'. Also straight outta Iran, 'The Circle' is well up to scratch. I enjoyed 'Almost Famous' very much too. I can't remember any more. I really disliked 'Amores Perros' and I only saw the trailer. Didn't they kill real dogs? Sarah is OTM about EG on BRED. Hello Tag.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'At the Height of Summer' (A la vertical de l'ete (excuse accents)) - is a story about three sisters in Vietnam. It looks gorgeous, is beautifully acted and is weighted with an exquisite sense of languor and longi

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Best in Show' is another I forgot. I liked the way it was weighted with an exquisite sense of languor and longi

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed them both.

Peter Miller, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can't think of many films that stick in the memory. uh jay and silent bob was grate, but that's just me and my monkey. The Others was class. I wasn't taken with leaping Lizards, shredding tigers (or whatevah), but it was "a good film"(tm). Shrek was fun. err, that's it

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME

the pinefox, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Together, A One and a Two (what was the original title in Chinese?), and Ghost World.

On Amores Perros: Gael's eyes are the best eyes in the year and in many years to come, though. And he lives in London ...

Laetitia, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

;-) Nick you sarky son of a bitch

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

;-)That was of course meant to be son of a bit

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit, I just remembered 'Audition'. Bye-bye Amelie.

Andrew L, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Summer Catch, On the Line and Glitter are the only acceptable answers to this question.

Nicole, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm... Audition. Forgotten that too. Maybe. It was certainly the most horrific film I have ever seen. But was it anything more than a shocker?

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. Anyway 'A one and a two' = yi-yi.

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Miike rocks. Most miserable man in cinema, and that includes Terence Davies. 'We are all disappointed people...' etc.

Will, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know why I insist on doing this, but yes - 'A one and a two' / yi-yi. I forgot that too. That's in there. I think that makes 10. ("SO WHAT?" cries anti-decimal hegemony mark s)

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What year does Croupier count as? I saw it this year. Mmmmm Clive Owen. That and A Ma Souer were my favorites, oh, and the rerelease of Don't Look Now.

rosemary, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, was "Audition" this year? I'll go for that then.

I found it reassuring in a perverse kind of way. Although I might have invested much time and emotion in a relationship it transpired was based on lies, broken hearts heal faster than severed limbs.

Trevor, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeeeeeeees, well, I've seen hardly any of these films of which you speak as they're never on at the Newham Showcase.

DG, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed 'Audition' on purpose, because it sounded too scary. 'Best in show' was so much FUN, but I saw it translated, and 'A ma soueur', frankly, it was a bit rubbish.

Not having seen 'The piano teacher' or ' The Others' yet.

Laetitia, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What the hell even came out this year? It was a bad year for movies, everything I saw was crap, almost. I'm not 100% sure what I think is best, but I know for CERTAIN that the worst film of the year was Waking Life. I also believe Amelie is probably worse, and would probably make me want to hunt down all involved and kill them, AND kill all twee idiots in the process (WHEELER THIS GOES FOR YOUR FRIEND WITH HER FACE 800 TIMES ON HIS COMPUTER WALLPAPER), so I refuse to see it. I'm also certain I will not like Lord of the Rings, because I hate movies like that.

Um, I really liked Ocean's 11 and Josie and the Pussycats. Bridget Jones's Diary was horrifically bad. I don't even remember what else I saw.

OH, you know what else was horrible? That Nicolas Cage movie with Penelope Cruz. Penelope Cruz is the fucking pits, man. I can't wait to see Vanilla Sky.

Ally, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes! Josie and the Pussycats! I saw THAT! It were ACE!

DG, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Amelie, so if that makes me a twee idiot then I'm ready to die.

Honda, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best in show and Shrek. What's this Harry Potter then?

Billy Dods, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Christ, I haven't seen much this year, and most of those I have seen have been disappointing. Shrek was pretty poor, Tears Of The Black Tiger wasn't great and Ghost World was good but not as good as I'd hoped.

My favourites have been Together and The Man Who Wasn't There, although I had minor problems with the endings of both.

Ally C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You've got to love the end of Together - it's like Pipes of Peace.

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Together was probably my favourite movie of the year, followed by (in no particular order) Moulin Rouge (cried my eyes out), Best In Show, Amelie, Ghost World (although not as good as I wanted it to be)...

Tag saw some at previews so I never got around to the ones in his list that aren't in mine! I am lazy.

Bizarre award goes to Tears of the Black Tiger but I can't say that I am fond of it when I think of it.

I can't watch horror movies so that rules out quite a few that I thought seemed interesting, like Audition.

Fun fluff: Legally Blonde (better than Josie & the PC methinks)

I don't feel it was a particularly bad year - there is always tons of dross (i.e. Wedding Planner) but there was usually something on that we wanted to see...

elisa k, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I escaped for five seconds to see 'The Wedding Planner' but had to comply with 'Miss Congeniality' instead, so I don't know if it was a very clever move.

Revising my choice, I think I liked 'Together' because it said a lot about my childhood, 'Ghost World' because it said a lot about my own 17/18/19 years old, and I expect/fear my middle age is going to resemble that of the software engineer in 'Yi-Yi'...damn.

Laetitia, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Problems with the ending of Together? Each to their own, I supposed. I can still feel the love even now. Football, Abba, Sweden - what more do you need?

Beats me how anyone could "enjoy" the Piano Teacher, it's well-made, intelligent and all that, but what was it actually for? I liked Code Unknown much more, not normally a big fan of La Binoche but she was excellent in that.

Iranian film of the year - "The day I became a woman", deceptively simple yet subtly profound.

24 Hour Party People...jury's still out on how good it actually *is*, but as a naturalised Mancunian and teenage Factory obsessive, bits of it made the hairs on my neck stand on end.

Hello, Peter. I have a photo of you. Cash in a brown envelope or I publish.

Thought Josie and the Pussycats was a great idea, some good bits but a bit of a let down, all told.

Tag, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still say "Crouching tiger..." is my fave of this year. Is it just me or has 2001 been shite for movies? "Traffic" was muddled and unsure of what point it was trying to make. "Requiem for a dream" was dull and OTT. Theres quite a few movies I havent seen yet although such as "Ameile", "Together" and "Amore Perros".

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i really thought traffic was last year.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot about Exit Wounds! Big Stevie back on form and a double spiking.

Jonnie, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Traffic does seem a long time ago, but I think it only came out here in January.

N., Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Royal Tennenbaums. Time & Tide. Josie. Was Bring It On this year? I forget. Also, if this year, Centerstage.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorite movies this year were "Iron Monkey" (which is an older movie), "Shrek" (which many others disliked), and "Zoolander" (which many others disliked). The best movie of the year WILL be "Fellowship Of The Ring".

Dan Perry, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Brotherhood of the Wolf? I haven't gotten round to seeing yet, but I've heard it's pretty spiffing.

Trevor, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glitter! Haven't seen it yet but it *must* be a classick

helen fordsdale, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which sight and sound writers?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿

No one asked me!!

mark s, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zoolander was fantastic, I forgot.

Ally, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Josie & the Pussycats
2. Ocean's 11
3. From Hell
4. Zoolander
5. Mulholland Drive
6. The Others
7. Spy Game
8. The Road Home
Worst: 1. Waking Life
2. Lord of the Rings
3. The Royal Tennenbaums
4. Captain Corelli's Mandolin
5. Sexy Beast
6. Amores Perros
7. Amelie
8. Original Sin
I haven't seen Waking Life, Lord of the Rings, or Royal Tennenbaums, but I know they're the worst. Time & Tide and Traffic are two of the best movies ever, but they came out last year.

Wheeler, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, From Hell was great! Me and Ramon want to see the Royal Tennenbaums, you fuckwad. You're not invited, just when I was going to invite you over for Xmas too.

Ally, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Memento, Last Wedding for orgasmic shouts of Canadian lit classics and Bride of the Wind for pretty, romantic indulgence.

Evangeline, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Bande à Part

2. The Fast and the Furious

3. The Man Who Wasn't There

4. Driven

5. Zoolander

Kris, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Ghost World
2. The Deep End
3. Mulholland Drive
4. Donnie Darko
5. tie - Brothers (Kitano), Zoolander, The Man Who Wasn't There

dan, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was a pretty damn good year for movies, actually. Shrek, Monsters, Inc. (which surprisingly nobody on this thread has mentioned in any context apart from Tim who wants to see it), Ocean's 11, Harry Potter, AI, Cowboy Bebop movie, Final Fantasy (which nobody has mentioned, but I'm not surprised at), and probably more I'm forgetting. And I also saw Traffic and Crouching Tiger, although those were last year. The only really bad movie I can recall is Avalon. The director of Ghost in the Shell brings you the Polish Matrix!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Together was definitely my favourite film of the year, possibly of the last couple of years. glad to see so many here liked it too.

does anyone know how i can get hold of the soundtrack? i've searched everywhere ...

rener, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry

rener, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only one mention of Eureka?

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A.I. by far. Nothing else even touches it. Amores Perros, Memento, Waking Life were all ok. I usually see everything, but this year I've been distracted. I will also be the first to say that Vanilla Sky is underrated, as well as Moulin Rougue.

Best film that I finally came to appreciate after hating it for a long time: L'avventura.

Ryan, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What did you guys like about Zoolander? I thought that was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Did you think it was funny? Or a satire on the world of the male model? I'm curious.

I like Memento & Mullholland Drive & not much else (not sure how many other I saw, though).

Mark, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What made you change your mind about L'Avventura?

Oh, I thought Zoolander was funny, btw. I mean, male models, that's a ridiculous thing to "satire", up there with boy bands in uselessness, it's a satire unto itself. BUT I just thought it was funny. Billy Zane's scene was priceless.

Ally, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Movies exist for one reason, as fodder for inside jokes. "David Bowie". "K-Mart". "Magnum". "I was the fat girl in 7th grade" ... "Ewww". "Snap". I'm willing to wager that I could live a stimulating day to day existence speaking only in lines from Zoolander. Also, I'm reasonably certain that it was, objectively, the funniest movie I've ever seen.

Wheeler, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
fave movie threads -- FITE!

I didn't heart any movies from 2001. Well ok i did heart some, but they weren't "great" movies (jay and silent bob, battle royale). i didn't see a great movie in 2001 is what i'm saying. well i saw 2001, but that wasn't newly released.

i didn't see a great, newly-released movie in 2001.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and has anyone mentioned "Zoolander as adaptation of Glamorama" yet?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
This is the ultimate TOP 10 LIST.

1. MEMENTO 2. THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE 3. GHOST WORLD 4. MULLHOLLAND DRIVE 5. THE LORD OF THE RINGS 6. THE ROYAL TENEBAUMS 7. DONNIE DARKO 8. SNATCH 9. SEXY BEAST 10. AMEILE

WORST MOVIE THIS YEAR (perhaps ever) MOULIN ROUGE

IM OUT

Nick Veith, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I'm heartened by the love for 'the others' on this thread but 'together', really?! and 'the man who wasn't there', too?

was this (2002) a good year for movies? reading through this thread, mmm maybe not.

cf. [amores perros] but I think if it had been made in english and set in LA it would have been casually dismissed as a sloppy tarantino tribute w. '21 grams'?

jeepers creepers is v. good, jel.

also, yeah, chalk up another mention of 'eureka', which I watched again recently.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

'tears of the black tiger' is on bbc4 tonight (that is how I got to this thread). I intend to watch it, you know.

2001, not 2002.

Looking back at my list now, it was an incredibly good year for films. An Mulholland Dr. only wasn't topping my list because it hadn't come out here yet. Or Lantana

2004 is a bloody embarrassment by comparison.

Have you seen "Dear Frankie", Nick? It's very good.

2001.

yeah, I think I was being a touch disingenuous, it was a good year for movies but there are a lot of movies which garnered a lot of love that I just couldn't, and didn't want to, muster.

my list: eureka, zoolander, jeepers creepers, the others, yi-yi, ghost world, memento, battle royale, eloge de l'amour (haha yeah!), a ma soeur (haha yeah!), la pianiste, code inconnu (shut it), series 7, ginger snaps (yeah I said it!), mulholland drive (v. v. good, in retrospect) (actually), amelie, the devil's backbone.

that is an ok, kinda dull list and it's all my fault.

Same here. Is it truly all that?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it's kinda awful.

Pootie Tang is not a classic. However, if you pass the prequisite of finding the idea of the bare-chested guy here http://www.25frames.org/media/screens/2571.jpg beating a large group of thugs with his belt hysterical, than you should check it out. The film works for me as a sloppily put together series of great bits.

I so rarely see movies (and so rarely see movies that truly knock me out) that I've given up on movie-of-the-year biz.

You'll know within the first 10 minutes whether you like Pootie Tang at all.
