Recommended Serving Size

Do you ever eat the serving size as suggested on the package? For Cheez-Its, the serving size is 12 crackers. I usually eat about 60.

I'm currently snacking on a tiny bag of yogurt covered raisins, which I thought might be healthy. There's 2 servings in the bag, and 40% of the recommended saturated fat in 1 serving. So if I finish this little bag, I'll have 80% of my RDA of saturated fat.

I think the chocolate covered raisins are healthier than the yogurt covered ones which logically makes no sense. Snack foods are evil like this though with their three crackers, two cookies, a small handfull fo trail mix bullshit.

The "yogurt" appears to be mostly palm kernel oil.

I always look at the label, but I don't count servings I count the percent. If I were eating 80% of the day's saturated fat I would choose very light fat food for the rest of the day. If I overdo it, I do extra exercise.

Eating is not math.

All the Federal RDA's are based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, which seems pretty arbitrary anyway.

We realized that we had gained weight because I was preparing food for four instead of 2. hahahah But I never EVER look on the package when it comes to serving size. I'll decide how much I want, thank you very much.

Men need a higher amount of calories. Women will probably have about 1800 (or less, 200 if you're Nicole Ritchie).

I have started counting nutritional info and stuff for all the crap I eat on fitday.com and I've found that I eat too much, of everything, in general.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I looked up the nutritional information for Rocky Roccocco's pizza by the slice recently and thought, "oh, that's not bad at all! I think I'll go get me a slice RIGHT NOW." And then I realized the data was for, like, .4 slices of pizza WTF.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

pizza is, like, sooo caloric. I tried to justify ordering a double melt pizza from domino's by looking up the calorie content online and 450 calories a slice just didn't seem right when I knew I'd eat like, the whole thing.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't measure serving sizes, nor do I count calories or check fat contents of anything. I couldn't tell you how many calories things have in them, though I could probably hazard a reasonable guess as I suspect that a lot of it is just common sense.

I eat a pretty balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg, and I drink lots of water. I eat when I'm hungry, don't eat when I'm not hungry, and my only concession to the 'health and fitness' fad is that I force myself to do 30 minutes heart-pumpin' cardio exercise (usually bike, but sometimes other stuff) every single day without fail. It all seems to balance itself out quite well.

Being able to regularly eat entire pizzas without consequence would pretty much make my life perfect in every way.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

How can you eat an entire pizza? Doesn't your tummy start hurting at some point (like after two slices?)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i think i have eaten an entire package of ritz bitz sandwiches before - 1450 cals. for the whole bag. no wonder I'm a faetty!

No, is THAT why some people can't eat a whole pizza?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

RELAX YR GULLET.

Americans must have teh super-tummies, impervious to pizza pain!

C J (C J), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

when I was a kid I only ate two slices of pizza, then when I grew up I learned that people didn't stop at two pieces, and sometimes went on to four.. five.. and sometimes the whole pie! at my first job people would order a pizza apiece (size medium) for lunch. My perception has been skewed since then and two pieces of pizza isnt ENOUGH - therefore i just don't bother, it's too much of a let down,

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

There was a funny Onion story years ago about a guy that ate his entire 2,000 recommended calories before 9am - McDonald's, a Honey Bun, some rich coffee drink... Sadly, I'll bet it happens all the time.

Jaffa Cakes are the worst. It is thoroughly impossible to just eat one or two. For me.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Not that Jaffa Cakes have a recommended serving size, of course.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

The worst must be that Burger King breakfast sandwich that's meat and eggs on a bun. I think it has enough calories and fat to feed a small rhino.
I just ate a whole bunch of those Pirouette wafers, thinking 7g of fat for like 7, right? No, for 2. Oh well.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I looked up how much someone my size is supposed to eat a day online and it said 1400 calories. On the one hand, that explains why I gained so much weight last year. On the other hand, if that little will maintain my weight, there is no way I'm ever going to lose any.

They now sell Oreos in little wrapped packages of two, and also little bags of "100 calorie" snacks. That's definitely a good way to limit yourself, but it really wastes a lot of unnecessary packaging.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I always figure out the saturated fat content for the entire package of anything I'm considering buying.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the "worst case scenario" method.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

serving sizes are a lot smaller than you think they are. or should be.
