Formerly Sacred Greek Places You've Been To

Anyone ever been to one (or all. or most.) of these places: Delos, Olympia, Mycenae, Delphi? How about some other mythologically-loaded site in the Mediterranean that hasn't been reconstructed/rebuilt? What was it like?

I've been to Olympia, Mycenae and Delphi, among others. They are ruins. Olympia is very dull. Mycenae is top class ruins, but in a town. Delphi is best because it is great ruins, and on the side of a magnificent valley, so it looks really impressive. Also it has the best museum of the bunch.

I've been to them all. And hell. Little known fact: Homer's Hades is located off the Ionian coast near the island of Paxos, at the Nekromanteion of Aphyra - an ancient sanctuary to Hades and Persephone thought to be where Circe directed Odysseus to consult the dead. According to mythology, the present-day Acheron River was connected to the River Styx, across which the ferryman of the dead, Charon, would transport souls to the underworld. Nowadays you can get your own little boat tour, which I highly recommend.
You planning an expedition?

(xpost) Not planning an expedition at the moment, but have always wanted to visit these places. Especially the ones that are in the countryside. And Delos more than anything. I've always wanted to stand in front of those lionesses (can you?).

you can stand pretty much anywhere you want in delos. you get free reign over the lil island while there. muchos fun. even when hungover in the hot sun after a night out in neighbouring mykonos (which is the almost inevitable condition you will find yourself in during your visit). there, you can pose with windmills and a big pelican. loads of nice photo ops.

Been to the Knossos palace on Crete, terrified out of my wits after coping with Cretan drivers along the coast in a rental car. It's been fannydangled about with by Victorians though, so I don't know whether it counts, but it was v. evocative of minotauriness and stuff.

I've been to all of those, but am I allowed to say that my favourite Greek ruin is in Sicily? Agrigento is stunning.

(the beehive tomb at Mycenae is my second favourite)

A pedant writes: the fannydangling of Knossos wasn't particularly Victorian; it mostly dates to the 1920s, I think.

(although arguably the man who did it was a Victorian, because he was in his seventies by that time.)
