I was watching this on TV a bit but then had to leave the building. Now I'm left wondering what the top 20 were! Anyone see this? The website's not even working. I'm sure it's Casablanca or Godfather...

Richard K (Richard K), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

i was waiting for this thread to show up.
#1 was "frankly my dear...."
#2 was "i'll make him an offer he can't refuse"

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

from that second thread:

Well, if one paticular line of a movie stands out above the rest of the film, the movie probably is kinda shallow.

What about movies where six lines stand out (Casablanca, according to AFI)?

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I was happy to see them fill their diva quota with:

"What a dump."
"I am big, it's the pictures that got small."
"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night."
"No wire hangers ever!"
and "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up."

all landing slots on the list. But still, this is probably the most reductive and least considered special the AFI has come up with. I probably got a little bit more pissed off, though, during the heroes/villains one because of how many characters got unfairly tagged one or the other (i.e. Norman Bates).

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Why would you even bother to watch an AFI special when it's just going to disappoint/annoy you? The closest I've gotten to an AFI show is Rosenbaum's alternative top 100 American films column.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

It's become a pasttime with a small bunch of friends from college. Drinking games are sometimes involved... tho' not tonight.

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

who doesn't like a lil disappointment/annoyance every now and again?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Some people I know tune into right-wing radio talk shows for much the same reasons, but I'm not that much a glutton for bile.

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

The best part of the parlor game: discussing what next year's list will be and how long they'll avoid listing 100 directors. (Or 50 directors/50 screenwriters, or something.)

I've been saying 100 Years... 100 Sermons (message movies) for the last three go's-around.

AFI's 100 Years 100 Terrible Quotes

1. From SW III: NOOOOOOOOOO!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

100 Years, 100 Cum Shots...

I only saw about 10 minutes, but was particularly disgusted by "Love means never having to say you're sorry" -- what a lie -- but at least they included Streisand mocking it at the end of "What's Up, Doc?"

Most of my faves are missing, like "Ordinary fuckin' people -- I hate em" and "I'd hate to take a bite outta you. You're a cookie full of arsenic."

Eric, there was that Auntie Mame "Most poor suckers" quote near the bottom of the 100 that was clearly placed there by the homosexual lobby!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Love means never having to say you're sorry" -- what a lie

i've always understood this line to mean nothing at all.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

i never remember lines from movies anyway.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

any the best line from "love story" is obviously the one from Her Wedding Vow about the "golden orbs."

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

"Ordinary fuckin' people -- I hate em"

What's this from?

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

i never remember lines from movies anyway.

I remember them if they're an extension of a odd, small performance I particularly like. I'll quote, for instance, a ton of Andréas Voutsinas' lines from his Mel Brooks performances.

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I've seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Repo Man, which will hopefully place high in the painfully protracted '80s movie poll

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Harry Dean Stanton!

I also don't think the 'contender' speech is anywhere near Brando's best in OTW, just the showiest. The guy who does the Hollywood Elsewhere site mentioned the likely best recently: "The way those nuns usta smack me, I DON'T KNOW WHAT!"

Haha, "White white white is the color of our carpet!" I like Leo Bloom's "I fell on my keys" too.

Someone should do the 100 Best Non-broadcastable Lines. "Don't you fuckin' look at me!"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

"Bearnaise?"
"... Yessss?"
"Do we have any of those... deliciousss raisssins left?"
"... You ate yours... Theezzz are mih-nnn!"

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

"Chess?! Ah haight chess!"

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Can someone tell me why I shouldn't want the AFI to be burnt to the ground?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Are they restoring rare movies and archiving shit or just making up dumbass canons?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

they do a lot of great work, actually, though most of it is sort of out of public view, unlike the BFI and such.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

most of it is sort of out of public view

is that the public's fault or the AFI's?

I guess if they're able to raise money somehow through these redundant specials, then I guess there's that.

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

ok yeah I assumed they had a purpose beyond this horseshit, but god I need the reaffirmation.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

it's the AFI's fault, a lot of it is in any case.

it would really be nice to have something like the BFI, but then we do have the UCLA film & tv archive, the library of congress, etc. etc.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Here's the list if anybody cares:
http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/quotes.aspx#list

The thing I hate most about the AFI specials is that they're so...American.

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see "she's gone from suck to blow!" from Spaceballs on there. WTF.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

It's also missing what I thought was one of the more famous Cagney's--"I ain't so tough." from The Public Enemy

HOWEVER, the most glaring omission has got be "If they move, kill 'em!"

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

The BFI saved my degree.

The AFI is responsible for some pretty cool stuff, guys! (this not being one of them)

The AFI is responsible for keeping food on David Lynch's table during the protracted shoot for Eraserhead! Commitment!

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

But I don't see them making a special about that.

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

when did they discontinue their advanced course in directing or whatever it was that terrence malick and david lynch etc. took?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah and harry dean stanton, too.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

and john milius i think.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

when did they discontinue their advanced course in directing or whatever it was that terrence malick and david lynch etc. took?

They still have a conservatory where you pick a concentration in editing, writing, producing or directing. My friend is starting there in August!

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I found this largely indistinguishable from the numerous VH-1 "list"/clip shows.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

they still have their conservatory?????

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

The cost of attendance for the 2005-2006 academic year is as follows:

First year cost of attendance: $54,764

whoa.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

http://www.afi.com/education/conservatory/

xp - I KNOW

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I think only USC is more expensive (Hi Jeremy! Hi Vic!)

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

shit for that amount of money i'll buy my own director!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

They still have a conservatory where you pick a concentration in editing, writing, producing or directing.

Oh, and cinematography and production design!

xp hahaha!

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

why do i get the feeling that it wasn't so expensive back in the day? granted terrence malick was sitting on a big inheritance.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

"If they move, kill 'em!" was the one I was looking for as well.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

oh come on, nobody in America has seen the Wild Bunch besides film geeks.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

xp-I think it was more of a vanity concern, more associated with "the arts".

Leonard Schrader is the senior screenwriting teacher, I believe.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

is that paul schrader's brother? does he have the same annoying voice?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes. and...I don't know.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

>when did they discontinue their advanced course in directing or whatever it was that terrence malick and david lynch etc. took?<

>>and john milius i think.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh well, you can't win em all.

(Damn, the second half dropped out)
