Another one bites the dust

I've just been made redundant. Blimey. Well, not officially, but I have entered 'a consultation period' regarding my redundancy. I feel rather odd, particularly since I am very hungover this morning.

RickyT, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone want to give me a job?

RickyT, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So where does this leave you now? I guess you knew it would be coming eventually but I didn't expect it to be a case of going in one morning and then being told "actually you could have stayed in bedZoR".

Sarah, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christ, I'm sorry, RickyT. What a time of year for it, too. Happy Xmas. Here's yer pink slip. I'll see you down the Jobcentre? Not fun.

kate, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really sorry to hear that. It has happened to me twice, each time after two and a half years. Have you been working in your job for very long? The sadness of leaving my last job was tempered quite substantially by the £3000 redundancy pay out.

MarkH, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm never sure with these redundancy threads whether we're meant to cheer or commiserate. It sounds like the latter so, yeah, sorry Ricky T. :( You have mad skillz as I understand it so best of luck in finding something else!

Tom, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This really doesn't seem like a good time to be looking for a job, despite networking last night.

Ed, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry to hear that, thats really shit, i feel really spoiled in this situation. will you be able to find something else? did you like the job?

Ronan, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unemployed ILEers of london unite (untie) lets open a short order diner in London's trendy clerkenwell, jobs and pastrami sandwidges for everyone.

Ed, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woah! that sucks! sorry to hear that!

What is it with business and making people redundant at Christmas?

james, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's kind of half celebrate, half commiserate. My job's been shit for the last few months (ie since most of my department got laid off), so I'm glad to be leaving. However, the job market is appalling and I am getting no redundancy money because I haven't been here long enough. They don't expect me to work out my notice, but given the time of year this isn't really going to be much help for finding another job.

RickyT, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's simple James, senior management are evil.

MarkH, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry to hear that. What was your job? I'm interested given that we have had more than one of these threads recently. And Gordon Brown keeps saying UK economy is strong enough to buck the general trend.

Jeff W, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Programmer for an animations company. The whole media business has been wonky for a while, and being a small studio we got hit very hard early on.

RickyT, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The question is whether this trend is because the UK economy is sliding into the pit of recession or whether all our bosses have just got their six-monthly internet usage reports.

Tom, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

:( all the best.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ugh, sorry RickyT. My part-time employers are currently trying to change our current 'piece work' contract into a more 'professional' set rate part-time one; somehow this will involve a salary drop of about a third. I guess I'll have the luxury of 'resigning' rather than being made redundant, but meh all the same.

Ellie, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you'd hea4rd this a week earlier I would have given you a fiver to do my Visual Basic interactive Powerpuff multimedia Girls thing, alas it was due in yesterday, so no money for you. Do you want to do the write-up?

Graham, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An ILE barter community does have its appeal... so someone could fix Anthony's email in exchange for a poem? What skills could YOU offer other posters in exchange for goods or services?

Mark C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops, this really should be a new thread. Go here.

Mark C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well Ricky, if you fancy a comiserly pint this afternoon pop over SOAS way - cos I'm knacked if I'm actually going to do any work this afternoon.

Pete, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really sorry to hear that, RickyT. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll find another job soon. Or at least come into some sort of fortune from a long lost relative.

Nicole, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheer up Mr T! You can watch Diagnosis Murder now.

DG, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, you'll find something else. I don't know what the job situation in the UK is like (I assume similar to here), but something's bound to come up. My own good fortune has made me much more optimistic about other people's chances; if I can get a job, surely all of you lot can.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete: thanks for the offer but I think I'm just going to have a long hot bath and then slob out for the rest of the day.

Deege: at what time is this televisual wonder on?

RickyT, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2:10 pm, weekdays, BBC1. I've done my write-up now.

Graham, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barry van Dyke, a walking talking advert for steroids. Diagnosis Murder r0x0r - we make the bloke at the pub next to the office turn off the music and crank up the telly when it's on and we're taking a late lunch :)

Dick v D, Barry v D, together at last!

ogden, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I too am out of work.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry to hear that Sterl -- unfortunately I've been having to say that a lot lately.

Nicole, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That blows. What a depressing season this is.
