Londoners: A new breakfast spot?

Londoners,

i need a new breakfast spot. Konditor an cook on Greys Inn Road has been doing me very well for the last while, their pastries are excellent the people there are nice and friendly and 75% of the time they get my coffee correct (cupuccino, tiny amount of milk, lot's of foam), although this week I haven't got a good one. I take my coffe and sit by the roses around the back of Grays Inn.

So, what am I looking for. A good capuccino or filter coffee and a nice pastry a 7:30 in the morning somewhere between smithfield fitzrovia and soho. Basically anywhere withing striking distance of the BT tower on my bike. I have to be at work by 8.

i like the idea of eating breakfast in london, more

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah, there's no way i'd ever have time to do this on a weekday morning.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Given that I generally can't sleep past 6:30 and it takes all of 7 minutes to reach work by bike, I have plenty of time for breakfast. I must go and have devilled kidneys in smithfield one morning.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

I want to go to Juniors right now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

If I could get up early enough I'd go here every morning.

Who can afford this stuff? Bah! This is what my garden is for!

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't open till 8:30 unfortunately.

I tried cafe Zilli the other week and although their capuccino was good and their pastry fresh from the oven it was missing a certain something.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

They are definitely trying it with those prices.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Sociah I passed Junior's yesterday on the way to Dr Jays Ladies on Fulton Mall. I walked in and drooled on the special glass they have over the cheesecake to stop people from drooling on them.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

it depresses me to think that i couldn't even finish that western omelette.

(lunch is early today kate!) 8)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Ed, I guess you must already know about the cracking Italian caff on, urr Charlotte Street (or is it cleveland st, I can't quite remember) - they do smashing coffee and marvellous pannini (now, is pannini the plural?) &c. It's always packed at lunchtimes but should be nicer earler and it's pretty slap bang underneath BT tower innit. Have forgotten name but if you don't know which one I mean I can check at lunchtime.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

It is very good, although fo some strage reason I have not noticed how early it opens. They had the Giro on when it was on and are likely to have the tour. I must notice if it opens before 8.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Leave me alone, I'm battling Oracle right now. :-(

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

I wish I was having breakfast, then lunch. If only there was some handy word for combing the two somehow.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

leakfast?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

I can't even grasp the idea of spending loads of money buying lunch out while you're at work (I always bring from home if I possibly can) let alone the idea of adding yet another meal expense!

Plus, well, breakfast is such a personal meal I can't imagine doing it in public. I can't face humanity, fullstop, before I've had my coffee. (My new housemate hasn't seemed to learn this yet.)

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like an incontinence remedy.
err, xpost

That Italian place on Cleveland St is great. I wish I worked right by it still :(

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Which on cleveland st?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

The one mentioned by Starry above. I can't remember the name either :(

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

if i'm anywhere near it, i stop in at the monmouth coffee company for a latte. their pastries look nice, but i can't stand sweets in the morning so i have no idea as to their actual quality.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

If you fancy Soho, Amato on Old Compton Street is lovely, wonderful quiche and stuff for lunch as well as pastries. I would have thought they'll open early for the breakfast trade.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

If I was a giant man I could eat breakfast at this table:

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I have to look at that blasted thing from my office window every day!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Monmouth would be perect, I love their filter coffee (their capuccinos suffer from too much milk). However they open just that bit too late.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Although the London bridge branch is open at 7:30 and that wouldn't be out of the question. I can get fat on their bread and jam.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

you would go to London Bridge and then to within striking distance of the BT Tower, all before 8??

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

I could easily do that in 15 minutes.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

perhaps not everyday but the extra kilometrage would work off the lovely creamy butter.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

it's quite admirable.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

could be worth it - just one monmouth filter coffee has the strength of an entire cafetiere here at the office, after all.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

amato is my favourite place for pastries and cakes in the whole of london, with the exception of a certain jewish bakery in hendon which does the most amazing, crisp-on-the-outside-almost-custardy-on-the-inside cinnamon and raisin danishes and apple strudel. unfortunately where i work sucks balls for decent coffee, but you can get a killer bacon sandwich on doorstep bloomer with builder's tea from peter's pie and mash shop in shadwell.

fyi, i hate too much foam on coffee, especially lattes which should have barely any.

stelf)xxxxx, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

I like to taste my coffee so I'm not a big latte fan, most capuccinos you get seem o be lattes with a little foam on.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, sometimes i'm really in the mood for a double espresso or macchiatto, no girling about, and other times i want the softness of a latte to ease me into the day.

stelf)xxxx, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Monmouth do a macchiato piccolo for 60p. Sit and spin on that, Bar Italia.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Hey Eduardo, the place I meant was Italia Uno on Charlotte Street and they're open from 7.30am. I am current eating a smashing panino from there mmm yum AND they now have loyalty cards = I WILL GO THERE A LOT. They have tomatoes you can TASTE!

I didn't sample their coffees tho, too hot (1.10 for cappuccino large I think).

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

what time does paul open? there's one in covent garden and one in marylebone, and lovely lovely bread and pastries and hot chocolate that is so yummy.

i want orange to open a branch in london. it's a brunch place in chicago that makes french toast kebabs. oh my god, so good.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Paul does great pastries but their coffee is dishwater.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

There is a Paul in Euston station too. It is very anachronistic. Ed is right about the coffee. I had a sublime eggs benedict there once coupled with a subpar coffee.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes eggs benedict has to play it as it lays.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

deep

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

The Wolseley (Green Park) is very very good for breakfast if are willing to pay a bit more.

marianna, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I had a pretty good breakfast at Carluccio's the other day and the coffee was just right. It wasn't cheap, though.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say the Wolesley but will have to wait until fashion editor friend takes me there for "breakfast meeting".

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Italia Uno wasn't great on the coffee and the croissant wasn't the best but it was cheap.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

hooray for Ed's new bike!
