Where does the general male aversion towards dancing come from? Is dancing girly?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 16 December 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that's got to be it. In the minds of many men.

moley, Friday, 16 December 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

male are socially conditioned to hate dancing.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Self-awareness? Shit if I know, but it's silly. Dancing is FUN.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes, and having fun is a little, well, effeminate. In the minds of many men.

moley, Friday, 16 December 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Try this for an experiment, men: Say:

'Woo, let's have some FUN!!'

It's hard to say that and not sound, well, slightly mincing, don't you agree? Don't get me wrong. It can be done. It is possible to say this in a macho way. But the result is a little weird.

moley, Friday, 16 December 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Is pogoing the socially accepted form of male dancing, then? Because it's, like, rough and masculine, rather than smooth and feminine.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I believe the circle of death is also acceptable. It's where all the men put their arms over each others shoulders, form a circle and stagger around the dancefloor singing the song on the radio (more often than not Take That surprisingly). Ties are worn on heads, shirts open to navel and bottls held in fists of steel.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes I have troubles understanding men.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

We're not complicated. We just like booze and breasts.

The Wanderers' Wandering Daughter (noodle vague), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Try being one. I did. Changed my life.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Noodle, what about t3h g4ys?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

There are no g4ys. It's a conspiracy to annoy homophobic bastards.

The Wanderers' Wandering Daughter (noodle vague), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

I think most men I know like dancing

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

sometimes you have trouble understanding women too xxxxpost

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Great conspiracy! A bit like the one where we don't dance near Tuomas! I think the mystery adds to his life.

Every guy enjoys dancing in their own way. Some feel that upper body movements in a chair constitute a full routine. I've been known to do the supermarket shop when stuck. Other guys go for it and enjoy it. I'm jealous of the ones who can actually dance mind. Bastards.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 16 December 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't it also depend on the situation? If you're on the dance floor you might feel on *display* and being judged?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah but the on display part of it is the best bit!!!!!!!!!!!!111

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Ken, the men realize they don't have the suave moves you have. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

"The men", you mean proper men, not ones like ken?

So, does this dancing is "girly"/"gay" attitude explain why electronic music never made a big breakthrough in the US, since clubbing is such a big part of it? But why did it become so huge in Europe then? And where does the "white people can't dance" meme fit in? Is African-American masculinity threatened by dancing as much as white masculinity is?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

oh my god.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Dancing is not girly or gay, though men who think it is often are.

White people can dance and oh why bother.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)
