You'll be wanting this place: http://www.whealrodney.co.uk/

It's in Marazion, a swift cab ride away from Penzance rail station, within easy walk of the beaches at St Michael's Bay, and with a lovely pub (the Fire Engine Inn) with a beer garden overlooking St Michael's Mount. I've been there twice and LOVED it. The first time I went was without a car and I hitchhiked from Penzance, but a cab doesn't cost too much ££ either.

Campsite itself is fairly standard, facilities OK, has a swimming pool but I've never used it (well, when you have the sea within reach why would you)?

Last time I went to Cornwall, I stayed with friends in Camelford. I can't remember the beach we used to go to .... possibly Daymer Bay. It was lovely.

Can't help with campsites but Cornwall's great, especially the little peninsula right on the end! Stayed in a rented cottage in Zennor last time we were there. Best walk ever is along the cliffs to St Ives, a great feeling of light and space on the edge of the precipice looking out to sea, but with the whole brooding prehistoric landscape of the moors looming behind you. Hate the shoddy crap at Land's End though.

I know. I used to say, if you want your photo at the famous signpost there, wait until the official photographer has clocked off (around 17:00 onwards).

But now, he removes the top piece "Lands End" sign and the two direction pointers (John O Groats and New York I think)...

Tight bastard!

The Land's End commercialisation is horrible.

Alix was wondering why so many places in Cornwall have a 'z' in them, and so was I.

Tre- means "Farm" i believe.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

it's just a more common sound in that language, right?

tre- can also mean 'estate' or 'house of'

trewartha = tre (house of) + awartha (overhead) = treehouse dweller?? ;)

Wheal Rodney is a fantastic place to stay if you don't want to use your car or haven't got any transport of your own. The train station at Penzance isn't far and you can either get a taxi to Marazion or it is on the local bus route - just get off at the silver house (the house has been re-painted so that is a but unhelpful but if you ask the driver he will know where to drop you off). There are a few pubs in the town, it is a short walk from Wheal Rodney to the beach and a little further across to St Michaels Mount at low tide. Wheal Rodney is a basic campsite but spotlessley clean and every year the owners do much to improve it. I know because I go every year. It's the best campsite I've ever been too. I've never been in the pool either but it looks great.

eight years pass...

Pondering a tour of Cornwall via Youth Hostels. Any recommended? Or any to avoid? Will be September.
