Why does my local library, which I love, have two copies of Starship's "Knee Deep in the Hoopla"? Best answer wins a copy of "Knee Deep in the Hoopla"...

what if i told you that i checked, and they're not cutouts? what if this was a legitimate tax-dollars purchase?

In the library where I work, there's only 2 ways we'd have more than one copy of something so heinous:

1. One was considered lost, and a replacement was purchased, then the "lost" one was found.

2. An affiliated library that had the album closed, and this library took on their stuff.

It could also be that at the time, the album was a hit, so they bought two, but I prefer to remain in denial about the USAmerican taste in music from that time period.

I should add, BTW, that I think calling a copy of that album a 'prize' is just plain mean.

Perhaps you would prefer Saffire - the Uppity Blues Women as your prize? I'll spare you. Thank you for answering and keeping me awake on this hot, boring Wednesday.

ps diane -- i wasn't calling you "uppity"...i was only using that as another example of the lack of foresight (taste, ears) of the collection development person at my library!

i always figured that people donated the crappy cd's they couldn't otherwise get rid off. in the case of some of the libraries i frequented as a teenager, i also figured that middle-aged suburban ladies really did want access to the complete works of kenny loggins and the manhattan transfer.

At least "Saffire etc." has some highbrow cred, inspired by, if nothing else, the typical "I've never heard of them" reaction most browsers would have. Libraries can look hip that way. Meanwhile, there's no way for "Knee Deep etc." to be anything other than embarrassing.

Saffire - the Uppity Blues Women

haha this is exactly the sort of thing i think of as "public library fodder." also cds by lots of singer/songwriter types played for about five months on the local adult album alternative station and then forgotten.

no band called "the uppity blues women" has any hope of having any sort of "cred" except perhaps with middle-aged suburban ladies.

in my mind they sort of blur together with sweet honey in the rock.

OTM, amateurist! i used to work at record store and they were all a giant blur to me -- bitter, middle aged women (white?) singing the blues about how hard it is to work at a bustling real estate office. my library was where i discovered a lot of great new music, but i had to dig through starship to get there. blecch!

as i suspected, dressed in uniform. they look way too happy to be singing the blues. shouldn't they be on their way to a public radio station for a live performance or something?

good point...i'm overwhelmed with feelings of sisterhood and togetherness right now. and starship isn't gonna do that for me, only the sweet uppity blues women from the rock can do that to me. bless them.
