I woke up this morning with a measles-like rash ALL over my body. It is very itchy and horrible looking. I went to A&E and they said it was almost certainly a reaction to penicillin, which I'd just finished a 7 day course of. Has anyone ever had a crazy rash like this from penicillin allergy? I am taking Piriton and covering myself in calamine lotion. But what I really want to know is when will this go away?

I look like a hideous leper : (

i've gotten it a few times, once from amoxicillin as a kid, once a year ago from sulfamethoxazole or something. it only lasts a few days, take benadryl!

Amoxycillin is what did it. Waaah, it itches!

Thanks, caitlin, it is reassuring to know I am not alone in my pox. A few days is not so bad, I will use it as an opportunity to stay in bed and finish my book. I will get benadryl tomorrow, too.

i call bullshit on calomine lotion - a total sham unless you're planning to bathe in it. anyway my sympathies cathy: being itchy is the worst

Try bathing in a pine tar liquid soap, I believe that can help. Stinks like buggery tho.

Aveeno oatmeal bath is the only thing that works.

I'm with Andy on the Aveeno- and do take the Benedryl and best of all Benedryl makes a gel type lotion for the itch (you have hives) and the gel is cooling and soothing and kind of numbs the itch for a while. Calamine is just pink and useless. The rash will come up and subside over the course of 3 days then it's gone. The weird part is that you may never have an allergic reaction to penicillin again, or you might;or something totally different may trigger it. Researchers are speculating now some hive-reactions may be a combination of the thing you're suddenly allergic to and stress. Good luck with the itch!

I had a really bad case of chicken pox a some years ago which was freaky because I remember having it as a kid, too. I looked in the mirror and felt like an alien had taken over my body. And the itching was sheer hell. I found the best way to deal with it was to keep taking baths/showers and then get in front of a fan to dry off. The coolness helps.
