Is there a rule where a guy should ask a girl for her phone number instead of giving out his?

I'm clueless so please fill me in. Is there some formula for success when trying to meet a girl, where you have to get her phone number? The last 2 times I tried, I gave out my number, and never got a call. It was wretched. Everything seemed cool, good conversation, they were interested, they asked me about doing something in the future, one of them wanted to drive me home, (I couldn't, I was going somewhere else, but I gave out my number). Now I just did it again last night. I'm wondering if I screwed up and should have got her number. Honestly I would much rather get called, but in the future perhaps it might be best to be aggressive?

i've always asked for the number. giving a number out without it being requested is totally asking not to be called

I got this girl's number this fall, called her and left voicemail and nothing came of it. This spring she asked me for mine drunkenly and she's been after me ever since.

I usually give my phone number out if it's asked for and I'm kind of on the fence or on the cusp of being interested, but yeah, if you really want it, you have to get hers.

haha how about when someone gives you their number and you say "alright! okay! great! thanks!" and don't give them yours.

I'd much rather give out my number than take one, mostly because I'm an idiot and will probably a) not put it in my phone right b) not call because I don't like them c) obsess about calling them and finally work up the nerve when it's too late d) hope and pray they'll be the one with the initiative and call me, so I can do that cheesy 80s teen movie happy dance.

Numbers should be given freely and spontaneously, not asked for. But I'm a holdover from another century.
