im saying classic even though lately theyve been too disgusting, depraved, despicable and plain fucking stupid in their quest to offend all and sundry even for me.

The "Whites vs Blacks: Who can drink more?" article is the highlight of this month's issue.

the thing about slavery not being that bad was pretty horrible. yet not as bad as i was led to believe. the black nazis thing was fucked up. the thing about people with special needs wasnt too nice. that was pretty 1st class cunt-like. vice are obsessed with race arent they?

we've had a couple of threads on vice magazine. but perhaps a fresh one for 2005 is in order. one kajillion new answers by the time i wake up.

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I haven't read the magazine itself, but from what I've heard it's printed equivalent of college kids who collect Nazi memorabilia just to upset people. Which is both more boring and less upsetting than they'd like to think.

Vice is ok..If you u really want offensive, puerile, race baiting, sexist, politikally uncorrected material i point you towards any issue of the current MAD magazine

They have a handful of contributors who are intelligent and actually known outside the Vice sphere. I think these people sometimes think Vice is novel or that they're somehow fake-slumming it by collaborating. There are a few actual talents who have come of age by contributing to Vice. Then there's the race-baiting, poverty-mocking, drug-loving crap that walks a thin line between making a sarcastic commentary and outright exploitation that they're actually known for.

Sometimes there are some things that are seemingly written in earnest where I really question the angle, which is probably the point. Half the audience is going to think there's some sort of metacommentary between the lines, the other will laugh at the retards.

Oh yeah, and the provocative/real/mock conservative leanings are a dud. They're too self-interested detached to actually have a stake in that sort of thing, so it all comes off as time-wasting bullshit.

here we go again ...

I've never actually read the magazine, but I ran across a link to their huge list of "DOs and DON'Ts" a little while back. Of course it was totally off-base on some points, I found it to be surprisingly on the money the majority of the time and a pretty amusing read overall too.

And that is the extent of my experience with vice.

I knew Vice was pretty much over the day my mom asked me "Have you heard of a website called viceland.com? They had an article on Hello Kitty crop circles!"

The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Monday, 1 April 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

But Fareed Zakaria, the Time columnist and CNN host, who serves as one of the show’s producers, told me that the show has “loosened the format” of television reporting. “What Vice is trying to do is to get a new audience interested in the world,” he said. Of Vice’s unusual stunts, he said, “Geoffrey Crowther, longtime editor of The Economist, had two internal rules: simplify, then exaggerate. A lot of very good journalism involves mechanisms to get you to pay attention.”

wow, I never really cottoned to Zakaria but now I kind of hate him

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 April 2013 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

pretty cynical yeah but also kind of a truth bomb

flopson, Monday, 1 April 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

like awful part is that it's being used to call vice "very good journalism"

flopson, Monday, 1 April 2013 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

it's not that he's correct, it's that he's directly abetting the worst aspects of the process

Thought this interview with John Gray was alright

cardamon, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

Generally would be wary of having opinions about Vice as a whole as it publishes a lot of different stuff.

cardamon, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

hmm this john gray fellow i like the cut of his jib

for some reason I have seen a recent youtube video of "destiny" being "interviewed" by "shane smith" and SS sounds throughout like an utter dotard

conrad, Thursday, 21 November 2024 15:48 (one year ago)

oh no, I am so shocked, who could have seen this coming

DJP, Thursday, 21 November 2024 15:54 (one year ago)

still a little surprised they never tried to pass off starting the proud boys as just doing embedded journalism...
