Stupid question: Is "Brande" a man's or woman's name?

Man's? got to decide whether to use Mr or Ms.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Use Mr if you're not sure. A female would probbly be less affronted by being mistook for a male than the other way around.

C J (C J), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

suppose that's true. Brande, Brande, Brande... what kind of name is that? No offence to any Brandes out there.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Why isn't there a term that can be used to address someone politely and formally that is not gender-specific?

Dear...?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Pretend to be Cuban or North Korean, and use "Dear Comrade!"

Tech Support Droid, Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

The thing I most remember about Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels is that everyone in the future is addressed using the honorific "M.", like M. Tuomas. Seems like a good idea, although I don't know how you would pronounce it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's 'Brandy' spelled pretentiously.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

This is an interesting discussion. Really. But let's work to form consensus here.

Man? Woman?

I guess Tuomas is voting woman.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Finnish Google is the same as English google but in Finnish. I've used Japanese Google and it's the same as English Google, but in Japanese. Interesting...

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'll invent a new honorific.

How about 'Smir'? Dear Smir,

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

You can't even use the English google in Finland. If I type google.com, I'm redirected to google.fi.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I would be fairly pissed off to be addressed Dear Sir. I'd rather be Dear 1ucy 41d3r if the person writing to me wasn't sure.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I also thought it would be a bit presumptious to write Mr. or Sir.

"You can't even use the English google in Finland. If I type google.com, I'm redirected to google.fi."

This is true in Japan as well.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

'Dear recipient'

I am always being addressed as 'Sir' or 'Mr'. Predominantly in written correspondance. The student loan company thought I was a man for a few years.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm taking Madchen's advice and writing 'Dear full name'

But this is just another reason not to give your kid a strange name.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh and if you read my first post without the question mark, it kind of sounds like a long-lost track from "In the Jungle Groove" or something.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Definitely a woman's name. Type in Brande and "baby names" into Google

Elvis Gainsbourg, Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah full name is the best solution so far.

You could always just put Dear Exhalted One. Nobody would take offence to this surely?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

'Dear most beautiful wonderful person you'

Actually this is how my mother often begins letters to me. At least, I hope she only uses it on me.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Dear Fruit of my Loins

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Brande is not even a name. Just say Dear Dog and be done with it.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Type in Brande and "baby names" into Google

Now I am filled with horror, imagining a letter filled with ickle baby talk.

C J (C J), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

I've had a couple of letters from Africa recently addressing me as Dear Ma - is that short for Madam?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

It's short for 'Mother'. They are your long lost children.

C J (C J), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

My mum does the e-instead-of-y thing at the end of her name.

But really, Brande isn't a fucking name. Some people.

I'd rather be Dear 1ucy 41d3r if the person writing to me wasn't sure.

Do you have a |-|4>

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I can't read that.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Me neither! I got a CV with a smiley on it today too, and an accompanying letter that was signed off with 'byeee'.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I got a CV once from someone called "Mercedes" and she announced that it was because she was conceived in the back on one.
