Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has apparently put his other foot in his mouth.

Danica Patrick, who stunned the racing world with a fourth-place finish in the Indianapolis 500, told an Indy Racing League teleconference that blundering Bernie blasted her with more sexist remarks over the weekend.

The 74-year-old Ecclestone raised eyebrows last week when he praised Patrick's Indy success to the media but questioned whether she should compete with men.

"You know I've got one of those wonderful ideas ... women should be dressed in white like all the other domestic appliances," he said.

Yeah, I'd wager he's a man who's been slowly ebbing towards senility for a while. Inappropriate sexual behavior and speech is one of the hallmarks of dementia, right?

I saw that this morning and it reminded me of Berlusconi's latest gaffe.

And dude, domestic appliances haven't been exclusively "dressed in" white for, like, half a century.

For real! Women should be dressed in STAINLESS STEEL. In fact, so should MEN. And CHICKENS.

from a related story at SI.com

"Ecclestone has made controversial remarks about women before. He told Autosport racing magazine in 2000 that women could not compete in Formula One, but if one did, "she would have to be a woman who was blowing away the boys. ... What I would really like to see happen is to find the right girl, perhaps a black girl with super looks, preferably Jewish or Muslim, who speaks Spanish."

The appliances should be stainless steel or cream ceramic. White is fine for women, esp. in summer.

youn, Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)
