No, it's not too early – the draw for the first two qualifying rounds has just started!

Excited because this year MY TEAM ie Vålerenga are in it, and seeded (just) in the 2nd qual round. Thus, decent chance of proceeding to the 3rd round, which at least guarantees a UEFA cup slot if we don't qualify.

Two all-British Isles ties in the 1st qual round – Liverpool vs TNS and Glentoran vs Shelbourne.

That's very funny. They'll be dancing on the streets of...well, Llansantffraid actually.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Provided they can get past the pride of Network, the 'Pool will meet whoever wins out of HB from the Faroes and Kaunas from Lithuania in qual round 2.

And there it is, Vålerenga vs Winners Match 2, ie either Haka from Finland or Pyunik of, er, Armenia! I guess I'd like Haka then, even if they may possibly be the best team – away trip opportunity perhaps. Now, where the fuck is Valkeakoski? *googles for map of Finland*

... and people still claim these draws aren't fixed

Liverpool vs TNS and Glentoran vs Shelbourne

This is amazing, considering it was TNS who offered to play Liverpool for their place in the contest initially.

I thought I saw something suggesting that the way the draw was organised, this was one of a pretty small selection of possibles for Liverpool, but I may be wrong. I suspect TNS might be able to sell out their no doubt vast stadium.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

But do Liverpool's overpaid foreigners even know where Total Networks Solution even is? Could they pinpoint it on a map? I think not.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Where is it then, smarty pants?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

just down the road from Airbus UK.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was nearer Inter Cabletel

From another messageboard:

'If Celtic get knocked out, look forward to "Christ Almaty" headlines'

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

It's near Artmedia Bratislava, as any fule no

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Christ, I forgot we were in the draw... *rushes off to check*

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

The Liverpool "fan" that sits opposite me didn't even know what country they were from.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Artmedia? Well they are Bohemians after all...

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Are they though? Didn't Bohemia fall in the Czech side of the velvet curtain?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Man speak truth

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

The Defenestration of TNS.

FC Sheriff have a sheriff star as their badge. Champions of Moldova for the fifth year running.

I fancy them to go all the way this year.

I thought I saw something suggesting that the way the draw was organised, [TNS] was one of a pretty small selection of possibles for Liverpool, but I may be wrong.

Yeah, the chances were one out of fourteen. Hardly astronomically against.

OleM (OleM), Sunday, 26 June 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

I think the suggestion I saw was shorter odds than that, but I was probably misunderstanding it. I didn't pay much attention.
