MERCEDES? WTF!?!?!?!?!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

MADISON!?!?!?!

CHEYENNE!?!?!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

"...and Cliff Beef as Montana." (Okay, a son in this case, but who cares?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

"mercedes" is spanish for "mercy" innit

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

The car Mercedes was named after a girl, not t'other way round.

C J (C J), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

"...when he heard your daughter's name was Portia, he asked, 'Why did they name her after a car?'"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

there's also the city of merced.

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

There's a small Spanish lady who works in the library who is married to and English chap. Her name is Mercedes Scrivens.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

The only girl I know named Mercedes = the one in License to Drive (starring le Coreys). And she was def. not Spanish.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Mercedes is indeed a Spanish name meaning "mercy." Popular name in Barcelona where the patron saint is Nuestra SeƱora de las Mercedes.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Anyways:

EMILY!?!?!?!
SARAH!?!?!?!
GWEN!?!?!?!
CHRISTY!?!?!?!
ELIZABETH!?!?!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I hate people who give their daughters stupid cutesy names like Dakota, Cheyenne or Kayla. It's like they live in this pastel colored Precious Moments world where that kind of name is beautiful and special.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Dolores means "pains" en espanol. no one names their kids Dolores anymore, but if they did...it would still mean that.

The Landlord's Daughter (The Landlord's Daughter), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I know at least three women named Mercedes, and they're all hottttttttttt.

The idea that Madison is a massive name always cracks me up, but I'm guessing that parents just want to call their daughters
"Maddy" without naming them "Madeline" because they don't know how to spell Madeline.

I know two BOYS named Dakota(h), but I don't understand hating on a name like Kayla, it's kinda white trash but every Kayla I've known has actually been smart as a damn whip

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

and dude look it up, Dolores actually means "sadness"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

JODY!?!?!?
NICOLE!?!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

whatever, dude. dolor = pain. plural = pains. i had no idea you-all were such lexical fascists!

labov's daughter, Friday, 24 June 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I realized how goth my last post sounded, sorry. I'm just feeling very Alex in NYC this morning.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Keleigh (is that how it's spelt) seems to be very popular round here at the moment. Like the Marillion song, but with a Kee instead of Kay at the beginning.

Also there used to be a woman who lived across the road who called her daughter "Chardonnay". You're going to tell me that's a traditional french name now aren't you? Even if so I doubt her parents were aware of that.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

It's better than Redbull, I suppose.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Arrgh actually she was black, whaever difference that makes.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

i have a real problem with white girl names that begin with vowels, with the exception of elizabeth. they sound so wussy to me.

sunny successor (when the lunch bell rings why dont you eat me) (katharine), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

"Paleale"

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Tawny

Aaron A., Friday, 24 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Dolores means "Suffering or sadness, particularly of Mary" It's my grandmother's name and a trad. Catholic one. She was named after Dolores Del Rio, though.
When I was at the OBGYN a few weeks ago they had all these baby pictures up, and one poor little boy was named Draven Lee Desperado Nicols.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

My favorites are those white girl names that could just as easily be either totally old school sword-n-sorcery sci-fi fantasy characters or born and raised in a trailer park, like Starla.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but that just makes me think of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, all names are vile and should be replaced with color patterns. From now on I am this:

http://www.kiwiscraps.com/Shop%20files/ALBUMS/utucanbind/Dark-Blue.jpg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

A girl I vaguely knew called her son "Indiana Tiger," I wish I was called that instead of "Steve."

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

In Newfoundland, every other woman under, say, age 30 is named Tammy, Tina, Trina, Tanya, or Tonya. FACT.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

What, no Trish? Philistines.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

In fact I wish I was called Tibor. That is my favourite name.

Tibor (sjkirk), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

haha I knew TWO girls named Starla, and TWO named Velvet also. we did lots of oh-so-funny "BELBET JONES" jokes but you really couldn't laugh at one of the Velvets because she was the hottest damn thing in our school, and a great athlete, and tough too, farmgirl would punch yr lights out at a moment's notice

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

lolita's name was delores.

best white girl name: frances
close second: seven

sunny successor (when the lunch bell rings why dont you eat me) (katharine), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

November is the best white-girl name. It even sounds white. She used to work at the Moon Under Water on Charing Cross road and she was lovely.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I love how Ned renames himself and then signs the post with his now presumably defunct ex moniker.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

So Ned, you want us to call you "PURPLE" from now on?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

His Royal Nedness.

She was named after Dolores Del Rio
Orson Welles apparently said she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

have you seen this? http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

you type in the name and it tells you when the name peaked.

ned - peaked in 1930s (337)
nedra -- also peaked in 1930s, but not quite as popular.

The Landlord's Daughter (The Landlord's Daughter), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Haha: William peaked in the 1880s; "Rock" peaked in the 1950s.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Mark peaked, the decade I was born.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

my mum was gonna call my sky when i was little but was afraid i would beat up at school so she called me kelly instead, still got the shit kicked out of me....

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

So Ned, you want us to call you "PURPLE" from now on?

I disallow the blind from making fun of my new moniker.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

haha, the name Lukas is just now reaching it's peak...trendy parents be ripping me off

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

and yeah she calls me sky anyway ...thinking of changing my name by deed poll

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

In Britain among the white middle class it seems to be the fashion to give your kids the names Edwardian of Edwardian doemstic staff. For girls: Molly, Milly, Lily, Daisy; for boys: Tom, Jack, Harry etc.

This made me smile in the Guardian yesterday:

"...Tempers flared in the heat in Brighton where 12-year-old Limahl Collins was told to change out of three-quarter length shorts he had worn to school because of the heat"

LIMAHL??? In 1993???

bham, Friday, 24 June 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Another try:
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call him Raggett Blue, I mean Purple

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Like the Marillion song, but with a Kee instead of Kay at the beginning.

Hey, careful what you say. Next thing you know we're going to see a nation of little girls named Marillion.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

What, no Trish? Philistines.

Dammit, I knew I was forgetting something.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the baby name link landlord's daughter--I'd been looking for that and they improved it since the last time I saw it!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The blog that goes with that baby names site is pretty fascinating:

http://www.babynamewizard.com/blog/

look for the entry that talks about Coopers and Masons vs Generals and Kings.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

That's a disgusting name.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

that is one ugly child

dahlin (dahlin), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, consider the gene pool from which she sprang.

That baby name blog is great, Teeny. It's weird how fascinated I am by baby names when I have no plans of having a baby anytime soon.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me, or are today's popular little-white-girl names disturbingly reminiscent of 1980s porn stars? The last time I saw a mother running through the bookstore calling "Madison, Madison" I expected to see some big-tittied big-haired woman running away from her in a hot-pink bathing suit.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I think so too, or at least stripper names.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

OMG ALLY

dahlin OTM. This will sound deeply misogynistic but my first thought upon seeing that child was "in sixteen years she will be doing anal to make friends".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I really don't want to talk about baby names too much with my husband until we know what gender it's going to be, but we've talked about it just a little, and that's his litmus test--any girl name we pick must have never appeared on a strip club marquee/Vivid box.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

A friend's sister named her kid similarly to the one Ally linked to. Her husband was and is a fuckup. Happily, the friend's sister came to her senses and divorced his ass, and the daughter has been renamed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

November is the best white-girl name. It even sounds white. She used to work at the Moon Under Water on Charing Cross road and she was lovely.

-- n/a (nu...), June 24th, 2005 11:02 AM. (Nick A.)

I would name my children these if my last name were "Rain!"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 24 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I am changing my forename to a semicolon.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 24 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I am Batman.

*shudder*

xpost= Teeny, what about classic girls' names like Emily, Emma, Megan, etc?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

kinda cool that "aryan justice" shares dr. j's birthday.

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Emily, Emma, Megan

aren't these page 3 girls though? ;)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I feel bad for kids whose names have bad associations after they were born, like my dad' wife's daughter who is named Jenna. I don't think she was predicting that in the future two huge porn stars would have the name.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

EMMA IS NOT A PAGE 3 GIRL YOU TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW TEENY OR WE WILL HAVE BEEF

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

aren't these page 3 girls though? ;)

:(

I happen to think that those are perfectly lovely names. Damn you, soft porn!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

BUT WE ARE VEGETARIANS

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

ok now I apologize.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Recent developments in the first letters of boys' names:
A and especially I show huge increases because of biblical names like "Aaron" and "Isaac" as forward-thinking parents prepare for the Second Coming
L is one of the few consonants to gain (thanks to Luke and Logan??? Perhaps the Apocalypse will resemble Logan's Run)
Noah and Nathan push up the Ns
Q enjoys steady growth since the 60s elevated the desire to be noticed above the desire not to be noticed; ditto X, Y, and Z
Woe to one time favorites F,H,R and W

Girls:
C was recently popular but now is being dropped like a hot rock
Who would have bought Olivia's stock back in 1960? Now look at it
P and D both had a big peak in the 1950s thanks to Debbie and Pat
The same flight to vowels as for boys
The Biblical trend is strangely absent for girls. Perhaps only boys are going to be called upon to fight the seven-headed dragon.

Bnad (Bnad), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

"aren't these page 3 girls though?"

How about Ethel?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

i have sisters named Chelsea, Jensen and two twin girls named Britney and Jordan (dad what were you thinking?! fucking Spears and NKOTB)

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I think this even started happening in the 80's, like Tiffany and Amber.

I know some come from the reality (wetmink), Friday, 24 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

or are today's popular little-white-girl names disturbingly reminiscent of 1980s porn stars?

My stepfather's coworker had a daughter about 7 years and named her Savannah Jade.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 25 June 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Ned's new name is obviously "Klein."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

"...when he heard your daughter's name was Portia, he asked, 'Why did they name her after a car?'"

See also; "couldn't afford a car, so named her daughter Alexis.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought the thing to do is give a kid a normal, blend-in-the-crowd name and also a peculiar stands-way-out name, so depending on their ultimate tempement they'll always have a choice.

So, some ideas:

Boadicea (or Boudicca) Lynne

Myrtle* Marie

Ignatz Randolph

William Beowulf

You get the idea.

* some people find Myrtle dreadfully stodgy and old-fashioned and ugly, but I like it a lot. I always think of Myrtle as a jazz age flapper chick hanging out behind the Cotton Club smoking muggles with the band and sipping a bootleg gin martini between sets.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Basically, I guess Myrtle is for me what Zelda is for many others, but the whole nintendo game thing hosed that association.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I like Algernon for a boy, either that or Philo.

For a girl...hmmm....dunno.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah...now yer talking.

Or, (and this is an easy way to get the normal/wierdo vibe working, too) name them after your personal heroes.

Emma Goldman Swinburn
Charles Mingus Swinburn
Mary Fleener Swinburn
Thomas Pynchon Swinburn

like that.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

You and I should have kids Austin.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Deal. Turn around and put your hands on the wall...

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Thats how I like it, but it don't make babies all that well.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

wow

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I feel bad for kids whose names have bad associations after they were born..

I feel as if I uh, dodged a bullet on this because apparently the first name "Columbine" was on my parents shortlist.

Hahaha nice one Autin. I must say I feel the same about the name Elsie, which was on my list of names for my daughter but was (not unexpectedly) rejected by all and sundry.

moley, Saturday, 25 June 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm not surprised since it is short for "Elsicko"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 25 June 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Heh.

It is short for Elspeth, I think.

moley, Sunday, 26 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Now that's sick.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

i like old-lady names. myrtle's good, geraldine, gretchen, marjorie...

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

and if i had a boy i'd give him a cool country/western name like "earl."

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

"pearl" would be a nice girl's name except for all the pervertalist connotations...

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm fond of Jane. I've met some pretty sexy Janes recently.
