Where will you be, what will you be doing, etc.

Me? I shall be travelling up to stay with my dear old mum in Glasgow on Saturday 22nd and staying there throughout Xmas and New Year doing absolutely bugger all, but hoping to achieve a nice and relatively happy and peaceful end to this miserable year.

A familiar and comforting pattern is developing in my 20something Christmasses. A spell round at Isabel's, a boozing session with my brother in one of Leatherhead's reassuringly dire pubs, Christmas Day with parents and aunts (and this time Isabel's family), and playing new CDs and writing in the afternoon. Boxing Day is a bit of a void since my Gran died but hopefully this year the Playstation will solve that. Then around the 27th I believe Mr Thomson's down from Edinburger and the pre-New Year 'season' gets underway.

I wish I had a Playstation II. I might have to ensure I'm just passing through Dastoor's neighbourhood in need of a cup of sugar or somehting.

Mark C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Playstation II = the new baby Jesus.

12 days back home with only my Digital TV box for company. Well, parents and brothers and visits from miscellaneous not-dead-yet relatives, but still.

I'm staying at home with my mother, stepfather, grandparents, uncle, and most importantly, the cats! I will probably see various members of my stpefamily, too, including my new niece, yay!

"Playstation II = the new baby Jesus."

Does this mean you can play games with baby Jesus that you used to play with his older brother? Is the X-Box baby Judas? Is Bill Gates the new King Herod?

It's a theological minefield make no mistake.

Going to parents' house where: I cannot smoke but my pregnant cousin can; my dad will insist I drink all the alcohol in the house then bang on about young women getting cirrhosis these days; my grandpa will ask me 15 times if I have a car (Happy 91st Birthday Grandpa) and my mum will force feed me from dawn til dusk then tell me to go on a diet in New Year. Arrrggghhh.

Staying in the Netherlands, visiting in-laws, avoiding dodgy knitwear, with a few good books. Cat-sitting for the new year.

At home with family then going to NYC where I am not old enough to drink New Year's Eve away yet again. Bugger.

I am not Christian. I do not celebrate Christmas. However I shall be at my parents as it's the only time off I get from work. I will have to join in with their xmassy shit. This will involve nobody bothering to get up until late as we are all past the point where we actually care about any of it, then my father whinging about stuff then retreating to study where he will play Tomb Raider for the next 3 hours, my mother will be saying how nice it is that I came by, and my brother will be looking at me in desperation. Later, after a semi cooked dinner and a long tedious visit from our neighbours, my mother will suggest a walk to the lynch. We will then haggle until it is no more than a 10 minute stroll to the playground at the top of the rec. I will be given at least one item of clothing involving tassels and/ or sequins. Prior to Christmas I will be celebrating Yule, which falls on the winter solstice. I shall get up at dawn to meet the new sun, which heralds the start of the year. Then go to work.

alix, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We do not really celebrate Christmas since we're atheist. My dad and I, that is. My mother hasn't decided yet. Or maybe she's afraid to tell us she still believes in God? (Woudln't care one way or the other though. It's her choice.). Anywaaaaay Xmas eve will be spent stuffing ourselves with Japanese food. New Year is still undecided. Either going OUT or staying in with family.

helen fordsdale, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In South Wales by the sea for the whole of Christmas and New year en famille (wife, kids, cat). The routine has been well established for a decade or so, and essentially consists of taking up residence in a corner of my in-laws huge house with a huge stack of CDs, a pile of books and my CD Walkman. Alcohol and food is on tap all day, and I will occasionally surface to watch footy, rugby in welsh on S4C (clwb rygbi) or The World's Strongest Man. A trip to Cardiff for record shopping on around 28th will be the only major expedition, although each day will begin with a 5 to 10 mile run along the freezing seafront to get rid of the previous days excesses.

The Oxfordshire treat of watching a lynching on Christmas day. Ah, these old traditions, you gotta love them.

Mark C, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Remind me not to visit Mark C around Christmas time...
