do it do it!

i used to race, even though i was/am quite a poor swimmer. i love cycling best, which is why i've moved more in that direction.

where do you live? that will have a lot to do with races/training/friends/etc. tell me and i can give you some more specific information.

do you run? can you swim? do you have a bike?

even if you don't do it to be incredibly fast, it's a good way to diversify your exercising, and racing is a lot of fun, even if you don't come in first.
oh, i kind of want to sign up for a race. post again with more info! why do you want to tri? do you have friends who do it?

i live in rochester during the school year but i'm graduating next may. i run, have swam laps but am not great at it, and like cycling best also, but i've never done all three at the same time and i'm not serious about any of them. i also get really lazy when school starts. i don't think i know anyone that does this. i just want to because i like monotonous endurance sports. i used to be in excellent shape but now i'm a blob.

my uncle does them. he says they are great. i'd love to, also, but that would require a lot more exercising than i'm willing to do before work in the morning! maybe someday. we can dream.

to be really fast you need to train, sure, but if you are in relatively good shape and can swim without drowning, sign up for a sprint triathlon. they are the shortest distance races, and are a lot of fun. i've seen people of all ages/sizes doing them.

eleven months pass...
I just signed up for a half-Ironman.

What the fuck was I thinking?

That it will be fun?

How long do you have to prepare, and what is your endurance fitness like? You don't come across as a rash person at all, so I doubt you'd jump into something beyond you.

it's October 1st. My endurance fitness is probably decent...I run 6-8 miles 3x per week (8 minute miles pace) and play basketball for 90 minutes or more each week as well. I'm lean and of average athletic temperment. I've run four marathons so I know most of it will be mental anyway. The biggest problem is that I haven't swam freestyle in probably 15 years at least. My goal is to grunt this one out without injuring myself and then seriously contemplate an Iron Man for next summer.
