people are getting MARRIED!

Two couples I know got married this weekend. Not close friends, but people I hung out with in college! Now they're married! They just suddenly grew up, it seems like. How'd that happen so fast? It blows my mind!

Is there a switch that goes off from "I'm a teenager, or at least I feel like one" to "Let's spend our lives together and take responsibility for the rest of our lives?"

Maria (Maria), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

now i can't get that "people are still having sex" song out of my head.

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

my friend is getting married. i think getting married is kind of stupid. i'm going to have children out of wedlock to make the president ANGRY

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

my first girlfreind is getting married this fall, and one of the first girls i ever fucked around with just gave birth to her second child (neither of them are mine, thank god)

yeah, it makes me feel profoundly old. and really immature at the same time, how at 22 im unable to make a connection that even resembles a relationship

JD from CDepot, Monday, 27 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

i feel so so old because my parents got married like a week after they both turned 22, and i'm almost 21, with no marriages in sight. i still like it that way, though.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

the first time i felt old wasn't when friends of mine started getting married -- it was actually in high school when a girl who was a year younger than i was got pregnant.

monsanto and yanni (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I know this may sound horribly sarcastic or pessimistic, but its not a switch that we hit, but a fear that we comprimise with. there is still a small part of me that desperately hopes otherwise, but so many of the people i know in long relationships are there because they are afraid of being alone. and why shouldnt they be? i cant shake the feeling that i dumped the girl i was meant to be with when i was 17 for no greater reason than boredom. surely that boredom is better than...well, this...

JD from CDepot, Monday, 27 June 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

My freshman year roommate just had a baby. People I know have been having babies since I was about 17 or so, actually. When my mom was my age now, I was 4. There's more than a handful of people I knew in high school and college are married now.

yeah, it makes me feel profoundly old. and really immature at the same time, how at 22 im unable to make a connection that even resembles a relationship

That's totally OTM. But then again, I don't feel so bad because most of my friends are in the same boat as I am and I'm the one with the most active dating life. Besides, I know I'm an immature spazz and that if I got married tomorrow it would be a disaster.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Bunches of my friends are married, many have kids, a large number of my friends are younger than me, but I don't feel old. Other feelings, sure, they occur...but I'm just enjoying life as is without letting mortality linger over my head. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

i thought you wrote "morality"!!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

"if I got married tomorrow it would be a disaster"

oh, i know this, but somehow its not comforting at all, maybe cos im certain that if i get married in 10 years it will be a complete disaster.

but then, youre lucky, you have a dating life. mine died on many a dinner table, so to speak.

i doubt it

JD from CDepot, Monday, 27 June 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy with where I am -- i.e., without any intention to get married anytime soon -- but I do have to admit that as I see many of my friends tie the knot, especially within the last year or so, I've often thought, "Hey, I thought we were all in this young, carefree, urban, unmarried world together! What gives?" Same goes with people buying houses/condos and having real jobs and shit. I'd like to feel like I'm not the only one who's immature and irresponsible!

Then again, it's also occurred to me lately that people I know end up getting married if they are a) between the age of 25-30, and b) have dated someone for over a year. I'm sure they're in love and all of that, but it all seems so happenstance, too -- like they just came together at the appropriate time. This kind of bothers me for some reason.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

i kind of want to get married, only to have someone to bake pies for, and to coddle

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

"I thought we were all in this young, carefree, urban, unmarried world together"

i come from the absolute antithesis of this situation. many of my high school freinds had no illusions of going to college, and are working construction or manual labor of some sort, some are in iraq. those that went to college for the most part came back to the same home town, and are the ones that are rushing to the altar. if they arent, they are drunk and stoned and miserable and bored. (there are execptions, i dont mean to generalize)

JD from CDepot, Monday, 27 June 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

That's exactly the idea that I've been mulling over lately - the randomness of relationships (xpost to jaymc). Somehow it's both depressing and really a cause for optimism - because, seriously, who bluddy knows what's going to happen and when, just that's something *will* happen sometime. What it's really made me realize though is that I won't stay in a relationship that bores me, makes me sad/angry/depressed, something other than supported and inspired, I guess.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

You have to remember that I don't own a single credit card and whenever I start a job and hear about the 401K program, I say to myself, "Oh yeah, I should probably do that ... sometime ... I guess" and then never actually enroll, because money is confusing.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Same goes with people buying houses/condos and having real jobs and shit. I'd like to feel like I'm not the only one who's immature and irresponsible!

I came late to music obsessiveness -- while I was in the middle of buying a condo. Ever since I have regarded it as a reaction to owning property and having more or less "real" jobs. But then I haven't had a serious relationship in longer than I care to think about.

everyone i went to college with is married or engaged, and one of my old roommates just had a baby! sophomore year it was trendy to get engaged or something. the only way i can see myself getting married in the near future would be if i got trashed and eloped.

whenever I start a job and hear about the 401K program, I say to myself, "Oh yeah, I should probably do that ... sometime ... I guess" and then never actually enroll, because money is confusing.

i say this every time. also, i say "i am too young to worry about that now" or "i don't make enough to take any more out than taxes and insurance already do!" and thus continue the denial that i'm not getting any younger. however, when i talk to my parents i insist that i'm the most grown up person on the face of the earth!

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

none of my friends are married, but a lot of them are in LTRs that look like they may turn out that way, and I'm already feeling pre-lousy about it.

it seems all the people i went to highschool with are married now, and a lot have kids.

it kind of scares me that I came pretty close to getting married, as I am pretty much a mess, emotionally, financially and like, all-around.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

When I was younger, in my early 20s, most of my friends were about 10 years older than me, and I can remember them all getting married in their early 30s, long after many of them had "given up hope" of ever Meeting Someone. That gave me hope.

OK, so now I'm actually older than any of them when they got married. I think I'm the oldest unmarried (or similarly partnered) person in my immediate/loose group of friends.

And the realisation has finally penetrated my head that it might probably will never happen. That made me depressed as fuck. But then I realised that now I could just stop trying (and hopefully caring) and stop apologising and just get on with my cantankerous spinsterhood.

MIS Information (kate), Monday, 27 June 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Why did I post that? In fact, why did I read this thread? I've made myself all bloody depressed now. :-(

MIS Information (kate), Monday, 27 June 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

I saw yesterday in the newspaper that an old schoolmate of mine who was in the class above me is getting married. I'm not entirely surprised by this (as I actually ran into her a few months back and she discussed how enamoured she was with her boyfriend and whanot), but it's still weird -- though not as weird as how a younger acquaintance of mine last year purposefully got herself pregnant (and no, I don't condone it, it was very misguided and, erm, irresponsible of her -- for lack of a less authoritarian term).
