Muscle cars/Classic Cars

Lately I have discovered an interest in muscle cars. In particular "The Judge" 1969 Pontiac GTO. Today I can buy one anywhere from $20,000 to $230,000. Anyone else like muscle cars.

nick, a friend of mine used to own a 69 mustang covertible cherry red. He let me take it to providence one day and on the way home the engine blew up on me.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

An acquaintance of mine is selling a 66 Mustang in excellent condition, in the UK, and I am SO tempted. Any British people have the fainest idea how much it'd cost to insure?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

sadly no, but i'm sure you could get a good deal if you go with a specialist/classic insurer. (someone once recommended one to me with a name a bit like "firepole" ... it wasn't that, but good luck.)

how much is he/she selling it for? you have to buy it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

mark, how much is he asking for it? im curious to see the price. the fact that you could buy these cars for $3000 back in 69 amazes me. and now you can get $200,000 for one in pristine condition. yesterday i was browsing for the 1970 Judge GTO and came across one for $230,000. I almost shit. here's one for $75000

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

If you want a "muscle car", really you have to go for the ultimate - a Plymouth roadrunner superbird.

I like slightly earlier american classics, personally - the Studebaker Golden Hawk and Avanti and the Chevrolet Corvair specifically.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

i love the 280z principally because it's so incongruous. i mean, think 1970s japanese cars and you think of the sunny, the cherry, the civic, the corolla ... and then this fucking glorious and totally unexpected beast heaves into view. it's just so out-there.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

My god Pashmina the superbird, is one of the ugliest things i've ever seen.

http://www.vaiden.net/1970_plymouth_superbird_roadrunner.jpg

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

yes but fully tuned it will do 200 mph. It also has drum brakes iirc. The very definition of a "musclecar" - card sprung, ludicrously overpowered, and w/inadequate brakes. The superbird is that taken to its highest degree!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

CART-sprung, argh.

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

omg this thread makes my heart all a-flutter. The cars I like are generally just antique, not classic. I used to drive a 1949 plymouth special deluxe and I loved it like family. Can't find a good picture of one now on Google--I'll have to scan one of my own later.

I have also always had a weakness for these:
http://www.bilsport.ch/tuning/Oldies/images/P1800.jpg

(whether hatchback or coupe versions. It's not in the league of the muscle cars I know, and I don't mean to sully the thread, but still, it's cool and odd even though it's a Volvo. Z-cars and e-types also appeal to me for their similar shape.)

The Mustang that Mark mentioned above is totally drool-worthy. For one thing, it's GOLD. As far as American cars I tend to gravitate towards Pontiacs.

Yeah, me to thread, motherfuckers.

Personally playing Forza Motorsport has soured me slightly on muscle cars (try wrangling a Challenger around the corkscrew in Laguna Seca -- ho-lee shit), but I still like me some of those weird exotic/muscle hybrids, usually Italian/Euro cars with American engines. Like the Pantera (most famous for being SHOT BY ELVIS):

The new "Miata" is supposed to be GREAT.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

The new Miata ad campaign is trying to de-gayify it with (I expect) weak results. American bros still can't get a handle on the two-seat roadster thing unless it's a Boxster or Z.

I liked the Miata my ex had, but I also spent many nights scared shitless in it on the highway. 18-wheelers are somewhat more impressive when you're on a roller skate.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

The Miata is like America-via-Japan's answer to the oldskool Lotus Elan and if motherfuckers hate on it then bollox to 'em. There were some dudes doing autocross in the parking lot across the street from my apt. bldg and half of 'em were driving Miatas! (There was also some guy in a rattly-sounding Lotus Europa and a stinky Porsche 914 and some cat in a Mustang who kept knocking over the cones.)

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I love the Datsun 510's -- not a muscle car, but the first real sleeper car

My first car was going to be a '68 Cougar XR-7 in original condition, but the day before i got enough money, the guy sold it. God those things are awesome.

Someone donated an immaculate '64 lincoln contenental to my high school's auto shop class. The teacher let me drive it as long as i got gas in it. 430ci v8, auto 3 speed, suicide doors, looked and handled like a boat. We put 6 people in it, took it to a frontage road and brought it up to 110, slowed down for railroad tracks, and lost all four hubcaps bouncing over the tracks. Good Times.

Esteban, I'm sure it would be fairly easy to convert most of these to straight LPG/dual fuel, especially given the relatively large boot space on many of them.
