A farewell to London from Rob B, and a final FAP...

Hi. OK, so some of you already know this, but... I've decided to pack up my hobo-sack and move my tired bones back to Toronto. I leave in 2 days (on Canada Day, coincidentally). I was there a little while ago meeting about jobs - one here in London and one there, and the Toronto job is pretty much perfect for me, so away I go. London is an amazing place, and I'm definitely sad to go, but this job really is worth moving for. Plus I would actually be able to afford my own place, which is hugely appealing. I've grown tired of renting (especially in expensive London) and having flatmates and living like some sort of student, and I'm quite keen on living like a proper 'adult' now. And of course I do miss my friends and family back there too...

This has been a really tough and sudden decision, and as you can imagine, I have a brain-melting amount of stuff to sort out in the next 24 hours before I go. However, I am going to have some farwell beverages on Thursday night (June 30), should any of you Londoners want to come by. I'm going to act as the steering committee and pick a place right now: DRAGON BAR, LEONARD ST, OLD STREET TUBE, 5PM ONWARDS. Why this place? Well, it was one of the first bars I went to when I moved here, it is the only place I actually DJ'd at, and hey, I like it (I don't care about it being in hipsterville). Plus it's relatively central, as opposed to, I dunno, Walthamstow... So anyway, come one, come all. You might even get to see me cry. OK, probably not, but you never know.

As for you London/UK ILXors, I'll miss you all dearly. Moving to a new city and not knowing anyone can be pretty scary, and over the last 2 1/2 years, I've become good friends with a lot of you, and you helped make my time in London the amazing experience it has been. I don't know what else to say - this is all so weird. You are all stars - thanks for being so welcoming to me.

Anyway, I can't write much more right now, since I'm computerless, and stuck at a internet cafe in E17 which is brutally hot and smells awful, so I gotta get out of here... But I'll try to check/post to this thread before tomorrow...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I almost started this thread and picked a pub for you Rob. I'm cancelling everything to be there.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you Canadian. Will hopefully see you there. Will anyone make me a Bloody Caesar ever again?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Dragon Bar is conveniently 5 mins from me, but I was almost going to suggest we go to The Maple in Covent Garden!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks y'all! I know this is ridiculously short notice - believe me, I would have loved more time to plan my move and a goodbye FAP, but such is life... But for those who can make it out tomorrow, it'll be great to see you!

Liz, I suppose I'll just have to send you some bootleg Clamato juice so you can make Caesars yourself ;)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Maple Leaf pub would have been good, but it's not really my type of place - full of the sort of Canadians I never really hung out with back home anyway! See you at Dragon, everyone, my time's up...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I suspected as much Rob, I just never noticed any other Canadian pubs/bars.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh, blimey. I don't know what's going on tomorrow (was supposed to rehearse but now I might have to work late, argh) but I would like to see you before you go and wish you good luck and goodbye and all that.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Fuckfuckfuck, if I'd known this at the time I'd have dragged you kicking and screaming back into the Lock Tavern on Saturday night.

Thursdays are always nightmarishly difficult for me but I'll sit here and work until I've finished everything rather than taking anything home. I'm fairly on top of things right now and Old Street is pretty nearby so barring a disaster I should make it for about 8.30.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

i'm unfortunately going to miss out on this. rob, i hope you have as stress-free a move as possible. good luck with canada: the return.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

If only there were some sort of communal message board type thing that Rob could post on that we could keep in touch on. Oh well, until such madness is invented, the pub will hafta do.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Crikey! Must be the time of year for it, I have someone ELSES's leaving London drinks in Holborn that night :(

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, I was just saying to someone that I'm exhausted and feeling ill and needing some quiet nights and days in, but I am absolutely determined to get there for this, even if I don't stay long.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Ooh cripes. I have my dad's VAT receipts staring me in the face, but, well, pedal to the metal etc. and hopefully I can make my way there for a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Damn, man, I knew about this, but I was already booked. I'll see what I can do to say goodbye to you off this filthy board.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Howdy again. This might be my only time online for a while, so hopefully I'll see a bunch of you tonight. For those who can't make it, no worries - it was crazy short notice after all. Sorry I won't see you in person...

I'm sure I'll pop around these parts again once I'm settled back in the motherland.

Hmmmm, final words... Let's see...

SO LONG, STINKTOWN!

Adieu

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)
