I love the subtitle of the second book there. It's almost pleading.

The font on the second book fluctuates really strangely.

The Red Chins in their millions
Will overspill their borders
And chaos then will reign in our Rael

Rael, the home of my religion
To me the center of the Earth

The Red Chins in their millions
Will overspill their borders
And chaos then will reign in our Rael

My heritage is threatened
My roots are torn and cornered
And so to do my best I'll homeward sail
And so to do my best I'll homeward sail

Now Captain, listen to my instructions
Return to this spot on Christmas Day
Look toward the shore for my signal
And then you'll know if in Rael I'll stay

If a yellow flag is fluttering
Sickly herald against the morn
Then you'll know my courage has ended
And you'll send your boat ashore

But if a red flag is flying
Brazen bold against the blue
Then you'll know that I am staying
And my yacht belongs to you

Now Captain, listen to my instructions
Return to this spot on Christmas Day
Look toward the shore for my signal
And then you'll know if in Rael I'll stay

He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again
He's crazy, anyway

If a yellow flag is fluttering
Sickly herald against the morn
Then you'll know my courage has ended
And you'll send your boat ashore

larry bundgee (bundgee), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

What he said.

Fezaffe, can you click-and-hold on the content link, "Save File As" to the desktop, and open with the standalone Realplayer app?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

my pc "works." it's a goddamn marvelous piece of machinery.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't work. trust me.

larry bundgee (bundgee), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

On PCs, Quicktime isn't that much better than Real. It's better, but in the same league of annoying. I don't know what I felt like I needed to say that.

Anyway, sometimes Videolan will play Real files, and that has a Mac version. It's probably worth a shot.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

On PCs, Quicktime isn't that much better than Real

I guess it depends, but I would totally agree with you pre-Windows XP on this one. Installing Quicktime on Windows used to mean "you have just given up your computer's performance by 20%! Welcome to Quicktime Windows! Would you like to upgrade now?"

But that doesn't seem to happen anymore.

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Windows Media Player on the Mac doesn't even play half of the Windows Media files I see.

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

People use WMP on Macs???

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have it. Barely need it but it comes in handy now and again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes you just gotta watch the Jail Cam.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I spend a lot of time getting rid of fucking QTTASK and REALSCHED. I know they don't really take up a significant amount of memory or power, but it's a matter of principle.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

It's a shame that the Real codecs are hampered by the shitty player (on a mac, PC users have an open source alternative), as the codecs are some of the most efficient out there.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 30 June 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

I love QT on my XP machine, I always select it if I have the choice on clip downloads. RealPlayer sucks balls, mainly because I hate streaming content generally. Let me download it and watch it at leisure, asswipes!

(Jody OTM about Real Alternative tho. Fab app).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

i hate how itunes reinstalls quicktime everytime i upgrade to a new version. then i have to re-set my preferences so QT doesn't open automatically and waste space/resources on my toolbar every time i restart my computer.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

every time i restart my computer

restarting? what's that again?

another smug mac git (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Don't you have to restart every couple of weeks on a mac? You know, after you install those regular $150 upgrades?

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

i usually don't restart if i can help it... i just wake it from sleep/hibernate mode. unless there's some reason why i need to restart.

smug pc git (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, Realplayer seems to be on the way out, as the streaming codec of choice. Windows Media, and to a lesser extent, Quicktime, is taking its place. And thank god. On a pc at least, you can play Windows Media files in just about anything. It also looks like the next generation of DVD players will support WMV.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

[shoots self in face to escape a future where WMV is some kind of standard]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Ah, it's not so bad. Just another mpeg4 variation. And AV people have very positive things to say about the WMVHD codec.

I'm not sure that I see the connection.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Windows Media is a fucking trojan horse for giving Microsoft and Big Media even more control over our lives.

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I hate raelplayar too. Actually I hate all software where it starts off as a very specific app that does something pretty well, then they make a whole ridiculous "suite" out of it. "omg let us be your audio/video/tv/graphics 'content delivery' media center and here let us make our browser your default and have this screensaver and let us replace your desktop also and sign up for cool weekly content and here are some news and stock tickers". PLAY MY STREAMING AUDIO FULLSTOP KTHX

...

Also, changing the volume in realplayer changes my windows master volume. Cut that out.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

As opposed to MPEG2? The H.264 is also part of the standard for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I'm sure exactly how it compares to WMVHD, but I think it's close. So maybe you don't have anything to worry about. Although, other than DVHS, WMVHD is the only standard that's currently used for retail HD movies.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

The best thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

I like H.264 and MPEG4, my phone can record them!

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

WMVHD is a type of mpeg4. So's H.264. So's Divx and Xvid, for that matter.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Yes and it is so fucking proprietary which is why 90% of WMV files do not work on Macs. I wonder which codec my phone picks for "MPEG-4".

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

which is why 90% of WMV files do not work on Macs

i always thought this was simply because "windows media player for macintosh" is a complete and utter pile of horsewank that would struggle to play with itself, never mind play a fucking media stream.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

to get back to the original question - i found the following advice in the real.com support forum:

Recent Mac hardware can get into a state where audio will not play back from QuickTime Player, RealPlayer, and other programs.
The usual fix is to simply launch Apple's GarageBand application software once.

seems about as plausible as burning chicken feathers under the cpu fan, but it works

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Actually I hate all software where it starts off as a very specific app that does something pretty well, then they make a whole ridiculous "suite" out of it. "omg let us be your audio/video/tv/graphics 'content delivery' media center
