Do dome people believe that Judas was the Son of God?

In his “Three Versions of Judas,” Borges logically "proves" Judas to be the Son of God. Was this the writer's (or anyone's) sincere conviction, or merely a hyperbolic device, contrived to debunk dogmatic adherence to accepted interpretations of the Gospel Story?

What's with all the theological questions today?

Are you secretly god My Mum, testing me on the faith I claim to have lost?

These questions just seem to be pressing on me more at this point in my life.

Borges is an inventor, is the short answer. The notion of Judas as humanity's redeemer (I can't remember if he actually says Son of God, it's been a while since I've read Borges) is cleverly and beautifully set out in that fiction. Roy Harper made a similar point in "Don't You Grieve", but I don't know if he'd read Borges or not. Perhaps there has been an idea running thru history that Judas made the ultimate sacrifice.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

i think borges was imagining possible heresies (but i think he was also well read in ACTUAL histories of heresy, and the antinomian wing of these DID use logic to interpret bible-reading in heroically unexpected ways)

I don't know, but apparently cylinder people believe it's Chef Boyardee.

You may be a construction worker working on a home,
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome,
You might own guns and you might even own tanks,
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Borges is essentially a gnostic in that story.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Don't gnostic believe that Cain was the son of God, or something like that?

The number and permutation of heresies derived from Christian theology are mind-blowing vast. People have had so many interpretations of the gospels, I wouldn't be surprised if some people did believe this, or many other things, about Judas.

From the Wikipedia:

Judas is also the subject of many philosophical writings, including The Problem of Natural Evil by Bertrand Russell and Three Versions of Judas, a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. They both allege various problematic ideological contradictions with the discrepancy between Judas' actions and his eternal punishment.

*If Jesus foresees Judas' betrayal then Judas has no free will, and cannot avoid betraying Jesus. If Judas can not control his betrayal of Jesus, then his punishment and portrayal as a traitor in western culture is undeserved
*If Judas is sent to Hell for his betrayal, and his betrayal was a necessary step in the humanity-saving death of Jesus Christ, then Judas is being punished for saving humanity
*If Jesus only suffered while dying on the cross, and then ascended into Heaven, while Judas must suffer for eternity in Hell, then Judas has suffered much more for the sins of humanity than Jesus, and his role in the Atonement is that much more significant

The Bible also states that on the cross Christ forgave those that had contributed to his death, saying that they "know not what they do." However Judas seems to have not been included in this pardon.
