the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

it was grim in nyc last i checked.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is sinking faster than a stool pigeon with cement shoes!

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

hay guyz this is a real one i think you better answer it

drew curtis @ fark.com, Friday, 1 July 2005 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

not that boobies aren't funny...

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

Things seem to be on the upswing in San Francisco. I can only base this on the fact that we've had trouble filling positions for the last six months or so. Granted, we're asking for a lot and not paying a lot, but there was a time when a salaried job was pretty hard to come by.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

where do you work? and what kind of positions are you trying to fill?

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

according to ILM, it's grime all over.

Ô¿Ô (eman), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

sigh.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

where do you work? and what kind of positions are you trying to fill?

Art school; web layout / Flash / project management.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

I actually have to agree with Polyphonic. Not only did we once share the same employer, but I looked at other jobs in that organization, and there were always quite a few, some very well paid (though while working there, i was not). When I first moved here, EVERYONE I met had been laid off at least once and there were no jobs at all. Now it really does seem to be picking up (my wife is fielding interviews at the moment) and it's also true that the jobs here seem to be better paid than in most other US cities. It's also FUCKING expensive to live here.

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Don't you do copy editing, JBR?

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

polyphonic: I know some Flash and need work!

Leeeeee (Leee), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

...and am in the Bay.

Leeeeee (Leee), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, SF here too, and i'm about to get laid off :(

i need web work pronto

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

AGAIN?

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I knew someone, I'm sorry. :(

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Don't you do copy editing, JBR?

among other things.

but you know what? fuck it, i'm going to grad school. wake me when the great depression's over.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, grad school, or as we call it in my department, THE PIT OF DESPAIR.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

more like THE PIT OF PUSHING BACK REAL LIFE ANOTHER COUPLE OF YEARS

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

I recommend going to grad school in Shanghai. Or maybe Rio.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

polyphonic: I know some Flash and need work!

I really have no sway on the hiring process whatsoever, but here's the ad:

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 1 July 2005 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

what are you going for jody?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

lovely washington, d.c.'s always gotta lotta work

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, someone I work with just moved down here (austin) from there b/c she couldn't find any.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

well, i suppose it depends on the industry, but if you're into the writing/reporting/publishing/pr/communications/research/law arenas at all, this is a pretty good place for it...and virginia's got its huge tech sector. i'm pretty sure dc/metro area is one of the biggest job markets in the country.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

she had gotten her master's up there and was doing non-profit work but couldn't support herself. is now a techie here like me.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

there have been like 5 jobs advertised in denver in the past like three months - it's looking grimmer than ever

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

that's pretty funny, one of my friends moved down to austin for tech stuff (and to combat general malaise), couldn't find work he wanted, and recently moved back up here xpost

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly, the way forward is to get a job with U-Haul.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty grim, so I've decided to do an accelerated nursing degree and thus be guaranteed a job. (and I want to do it too.)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Rock Hardy OTM!

TOMBOT, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Of the 49 metropolitan areas with a Census 2000 population of 1 million
or more, three areas recorded the lowest May 2005 unemployment rates--
Birmingham-Hoover, Ala., Orlando, Fla., and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria,
D.C.-Va.-Md.-W.Va., 3.6 percent each.

Look at my striped shirt, fucking look at it, etc.

TOMBOT, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

North Carolina is in the same position, right? Emerging technology corridor, business growth?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Is there an urban agglomeration in this country you can't say that about...or at least isn't trying like the devil to make it seem so?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Birmingham-Hoover is over a million now? Damn.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I have heard many things about the N.C. techno trade. It's the Navy's fault, I think.

TOMBOT, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

yeah SF is picking up, depending on the work. my wife works for a staffing firm and they've had trouble filling jobs with good people. also, the company I work for is hiring and we've gotten way fewer resumes for the job than I would have expected.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

but it's FUCKING expensive

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

go to grad school! I would! Maybe I will!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

SF is expensive but the jobs pay higher on average here as well to make up for it.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

what are you going for jody?

i'm looking at this program (and others like it). of course, i just talked to my parents, who are never satisfied with anything i do, and they think it's too "esoteric."

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Awesome. Berkeley too! DO IT!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

i just talked to my parents, who are never satisfied with anything i do, and they think it's too "esoteric."

Yeah, you need the SAME EXACT skills as everybody else in the world! THAT'S how you get a job!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

I have no data on this, but I think transportation planning is a growth field. More and more cities and suburbs are getting serious about it, looking for new ways of thinking about it, etc. Plus also China and India are going to need a lot of help with it in the next few decades.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Get an associates degree in X-Ray Technology or as a surgical technician. Pick a place to live. Anywhere. Because every place is hiring. Go, work, make money.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

MY UNDERWATER BASKET WEAVING DEGREE WILL PAY OFF ONE DAY

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

I urge you to go into the field of Epidermology/Tattoo Removal, you have no idea how aggressive the demand curve is right now.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

winona forever!

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

>I urge you to go into the field of Epidermology/Tattoo Removal, you have no idea how aggressive the demand curve is right now.<

Hell, really anything that ends with "ology" that's related to the medical field in any shape, way, or form is a good thing to do. The person upthread in nursing is going to be loving life when they get out of college. Virtually no way you can get fired once you're hired anywhere (too much demand!), huge cash bonuses to work somewhere, great pay, as many hours as you want (overtime galore), etc.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

I recommend jury consulting, with one caveat: caviar.

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

city planning sounds great.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

my new job will pay for one free class a semester so I need to figure out what grad degree I want and hop to it. basket weaving, hmm.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

that program looks super awesome!!! I have a friend who has a crazy job in that field, dealing with traffic flow through tunnels or something like that, and he's always flying off to bratislava and stuff.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

Incidentally Jody, did you read about this? It's...kind of on that tip, I think. Fascinating, anyway.

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's a fabulous idea. i'm all for anything that forces people to pay attention to their surroundings.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

i just talked to my parents, who are never satisfied with anything i do, and they think it's too "esoteric."

If they're anything like my parents, then they believe that there are about three legitimate fields of work/school, and everything else falls under "what can you do with that?".

Anything related to urban planning sounds very interesting.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

bratislava

where in the hell is that?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

slovakia, for real, he's there like every month.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

just got off the phone w/my dad, sorta complaining about my web design posistion and the whole time he's whispering "law school, law school, law school". i don't think he'll ever be satisfied with my "art" job.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Friday, 1 July 2005 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

i'm flashing back to the last time i was in a strange city with a money crisis, and i had the bright idea to try and get into LAW SCHOOL.

the underground homme (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 July 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i thought about law school, as recently as last year. no thanks.

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Urban planning can be odd, since I know someone who did it in Berkeley for a while, you get a lot of intern/low pay offers but not much else to start. He also did union organizing stuff and said that was great.
x-post to upthread
Yeah, I'm going to concentrate on radiology/imaging tech which is a needy field.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 1 July 2005 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

fuck a law school

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 July 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

I work with a guy going the radiology route. Plenty of jobs, pays great, and you keep your hands clean of body fluids (for the most part.)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 1 July 2005 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

My wife's brother did that. Made beaucoup jack right out of school, and after a few years of hard work he had a schedule that let him go back to school and get a B.S. in a related field and make even more. Now he's one of the main radiologic techs at the oncology center in Tupelo, and he's only 35.
