Holy cow!

My study of giant freshwater fish is showing a clear and global pattern: the largest fish species are disappearing. The challenge is clear: we must find methods to protect these species and their habitats. By acting now, we can save animals like the Mekong giant catfish from extinction."

OMG but what if they're MUTANTS! And we save them and create MORE MUTANT FISH.

That's what I call a flathead.

.....maybe a mutant fish army could be used for good! We could attack pirates!

Holy shit. That's a big-ass catfish.

They have some Mekong cats at the Steinhardt Aquarium in SF, that's my favorite part of the place... they're right next to the Alligator Gars!

Them rivercats, they just taste like dirt. Give me the pond-raised. (We had ten-pounders in our catfish pond out in the country.)

Alligator gars live in the Southeast US, Florida, Ark., etc. Imagine a giant mean catfish with tons of FANGS!

andy --, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, I thought river-swimming was safe. Now I'm afraid of that, too.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

I think if i was in a rowboat, and I looked into the water and saw that thing swimming beside me I'd lose control of my bowels.

Paddlefish live in Mississippi but are benign. People eat the roe like caviar and I think they're overfished. Another freakish American oddity.

"Infamous dog-eating catfish?"

I think the super-giant catfish is kinda beautiful, actually -- it seems almost stylized, and kind of seems to explain some of the ultra-large catfish in plenty of Asian art. Only: what the hell does it eat? Bugs the size of televisions?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, fish are ugly bastards.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I have caught catfish using Cheetos as bait.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait, no, those were trout.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

I caught a big cat in Arkansas with a Hormel Vienna Sausage.

andy --, Friday, 1 July 2005 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha, potted meat with a hardon.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

I have caught catfish using Cheetos as bait.

Were they suitably embarrassed?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

The kid holding that padde-fish looks totally fucking bonkers. I like the painting in the background, too.

Catfish are totally sweet. They, too, are totally bonkers. I think I remember hearing something about the dams on the Mississippi...they have these separate tunnels for catfish so that they can swim upstream and stuff...anyway, I heard that PEOPLE have gone SCUBA diving up in these and have seen MONSTER, aggresive catfish all swimming around and shit, looking scary.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Also: that catfish is just so fucking huge. I would have loved to have been a part of that feast.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

You've obviously never jumped from the George Washington Bridge.
