Stay in the gym jerkoff, we're trying to have some fun here.

Did you call that shot?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

There should be an ILX meme/code word for when you want to reference something but you don't want anyone to actually write out or cut/paste the whole thing you're referencing. Like in this case I want to mention the whole "You stepped over the line" bowling dialogue from the Big Lebowski, but don't really want anyone to post the entire dialogue. So just know that it's been mentioned and leave it alone.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, I know you were looking at the pocket, but I didn't hear you call it.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I wintessed dudes getting angry over a ping pong game last night. Ping pong.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Sorta sucks but so so much better than people who don't take them seriously enough.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

People who are competitive about anything -- absolutely fucking dud. I hate competition.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

dude, the east asians take ping pong VERY SERIOUSLY.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

if you don't take it seriously, you obviously aren't very good at that activity. competition rises as skill/ability rises. if i'm playing someone who sucks, i'm not competitive at all. if i'm playing someone at or near my skill level, then i'm very competitive. why play if you don't try to win?

competition = classic
whining about points/rules = dud
winning = classic
losing = dud
losing with dignity and humour = classic

biz, Friday, 1 July 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

"losing" a game of pool because you pot the black in the pocket it's teetering over because "you didn't call the pocket" is Classic. Just because of how DUD the other guys obsession with "the rules" is.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

biz OTM

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

dude, fuck that, you did not call that shot.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

you cannot use my ball to knock yours in, bro

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

don't hog the chalk, man

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

From another game, sport: "Guys, we've got have more setups for spikes!"

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

dude i don't know the rules you go by where you come from. those are NOT the rules we go by here, homes

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Pool is hilarious. I never knew that there were, like, rules to playing beyond sink your balls while trying not to sink your opponents' balls. Or the 8-ball or cue ball. First one to sink all of theirs wins. When people start referencing "calling shots," I'm like "What? I have to tell you where it's going to go in? I don't even know where it's going to go in!"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

"I don't even know where it's going to go in!"

That's what she said!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

And here I thought any sniggering related to my post would have to do with "sink my balls."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

PUSSY.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

don't hog the chalk, man

priceless. i sincerely hope that's actually happened someplace, sometime.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Happens everywhere, every minute. It's like childbirth. But with WAY more beer.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

and yeah, competition is fun. although if your opponent isn't being competitive at all there's no point in trying to push it. they don't care who wins and are just trying to chill, so obviously lay off the minutae in the pro rulebook.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

I've seriously never encountered this! I think all the tables I play at usually have like 4 chalks so there's never any shortage. Still, hilarious.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

you cannot use my ball to knock yours in, bro

That's just one of the basic rules of pool. I would only ever let a girl get away with this. And only if she was really bad.

Granted, the tone is annoying and the bro totally uncalled for.

And yes, not knowing the rules of pool probably does reflect favorably upon you.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

dude, that's slop. don't even try to pretend it wasn't, bro

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

Dude. DUDE. If you *scratch*, the ball starts in the kitchen, not any goddam place you choose. Jesus Fucking Christ.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

> you cannot use my ball to knock yours in, bro

I don't get it -- what's wrong with this? I mean, if that's what it takes, right? Seems like it makes the game more interesting that way, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

dude, no, you cannot sit on the table to make that shot. what the fuck

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

ONE FOOT ON THE FLOOR, DOUCHEBAG.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Solids? Oh, you mean the low balls. Sorry, I forget some people call them "stripes" and "solids."

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

That shot is totally makable. Just bank it, with a little English.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

yes, the kitchen means "behind that little line over there".

I don't get it -- what's wrong with this? I mean, if that's what it takes, right? Seems like it makes the game more interesting that way, anyway.

jaymc: nothing, really, except it's against the rules! but i think it's also one of the most commonly ignored and doesn't matter much to me in terms of having fun.
