i was looking at an 1868 map of Stoke Newington when i noticed there was this area called 'South Hornsey' (kind of where Amhurst Rd meets the high st), and of course, the now defunct area of Shacklewell was on there too. i've never heard of south hornsey before. so where else is there that no longer seems to exist?

You really need to phone Robert Elms, gareth.

Best reason to live outside London = can't get the Robert Elms show

Not even on the internet? Oh Robin, you really must try. He's hilarious.

They probably built houses on it and it got amalgamated into something. Locals might still know it my old name. Also, parliamentary boundary re-construction?

I'll try BBC London Online. Think it's also on digital radio, but I can't get that.

But Elms wouldn't think I was worthy of listening to him ...

Clearly, you weren't paying enough attention to London: The Biography. No wonder you were able to whip through it in seven days!

I would call where I live South Hornsey. Hornsey Rise area, south of Crouch End, sandwiched between Stroud Green and Upper Holloway (which is of course a rude word according to J Green's Dictionary Of Slang). Anywhere near Amhurst Road surely cannot claim any Hornsey Status.

Hornsey is a funny beast anyway, since most of the roads pertaining to it (ie Hornsey Rise, Road and Lane) are not in what is generally defined as Hornsey - ie the area North of Crouch End around Hornsey Railway Station.

BTW - I know people who say they live in Shacklewell, and its still on the A-Z.

this 'south hornsey' is nothing to do with, like, the real N8 style hornsey. thats what is so odd about it

'North Kensington' is odd like that - you'd think Bayswater would be a better candidate for that name.

eleven months pass...
the other place, i guess, is Arsenal, before the football team arrived, what was this area. i'd always assumed Highbury, but looking at where highbury proper actually is, i'm not so sure...
