so i bought a short sleeve choclate coloured, semi miltary inspired shirt with hidden snaps today and i am unsure about the cut or colour--i am wearing it w. camel chinos

also seersucker shorts in white and blue stripes, but the blue stripes are replaced with either pink or green c/d?

also how do i get over my fear of shorts in general, i think i have ugly knees

also, i am thinking of moving the main pallete of my wardrobe from pastels and bright cirtusy tones to more intense dark colours, crimson, plum, chocolate, rusts, etc--should i do so?

also what aboutreally dark deep, fleshy pinks?

anthony, Monday, 4 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't get over it, and don't try to. Shorts are a necessary comfort for three or four months of the year, but they are always an indignity. They just are.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 4 July 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

"Shorts," sold as such, are always awful -- but you can make a pair of shorts from long pants (I'm thinking brown or grey vintage slacks, or maybe Dickies) that won't offend.

Aaron A., Monday, 4 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I've found all this anti-shorts sentiment on ILE v. strange. I mean, I have maybe 2 pairs of shorts and I dont wear them all that often but I think ppl are making wayyyy too big a deal out of shorts. Get shorts long enough to go past yr knees but short enough that they don't look like capris or something.

deej.., Monday, 4 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I think shorts only work if they're more loose than the trousers you normally wear.

Chocolate can be worn with all pinks (even fuchsia), beige, white, black, red. With orange too but be careful of anything that's too mid-90s loungecore looking as a result.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I donno this all feels so rockist. haha! I'd rather see the person and THEN decide whether it works, rather than arguing for/against things in the abstract.

deej.., Monday, 4 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I have seen the person.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh fair enough, i meant more in general though, didnt mean to speak to your post specifically.

deej.., Monday, 4 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

To get over your fear of your having ugly knees, you must imagine everyone else is naked... or is that for fear of public speaking? Doesn't matter, I guess. It works pretty well for everything - that, and tequila.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

what about chocolate and lemon yellow or pale blue?

youn, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

I've found all this anti-shorts sentiment on ILE v. strange.

Seriously. Too fucking weird.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

it's really not just ILE

Seuss, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Adult men should never wear shorts unless they're at the beach! Seriously. What do you need the shorts for? Legs don't really get hot do they? They're like the least heat sensitive part of the body.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

When it's properly hot they really make a difference. You probably won't pull wearing shorts, but then all you need to think is that other men look crap in shorts too, so relatively speaking you'll just look completely normal.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

In SE Asia, a grown man wearing shorts will get laughed at

phil ron hubbard, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i'm a total crybaby about heat, but if i've survived periods of 100ºF heat without resorting to shorts then surely others can deal.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but that's just narcissistice masochism, Lauren :)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I saw some old guy wearing multi-coloured shorts (which seemed more like boxershorts/swimming trunks), pulled up white socks and brown office shoes! :barf:

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

you make a good point, mark.

nathalie: EW!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Legs don't really get hot do they?

Do you HAVE legs?! Or leg hair, even? Jesus fucking christ.

New rule: English people (no I do not know if any of you are english nor do I really care) are not allowed to have an opinion on shorts since (a) you never need them and (b) you of all people should not be allowed in shorts.

Come to the Midwest in the middle of the summer and simmer in your swamp-crotch, hat0rz.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

i was born and raised in the midwest. shorts be damned.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Nobody needs to see my legs. Fuck a pair of shorts, yo.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i've pulled in shorts - they're okay if you have decent legs, which i do (not boasting, they're way too white, but in pretty good shape) and they should never be shorter than mid-thigh, preferably knee-length.

stelf)xxxx, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Over 100 all the time here in summer, and I stick to pants. Nothing against shorts in general though..I'm just whiplash thin, so I think I look like a clown in them personally.

I definitely prefer the darker intense colors myself, Anthony. As for pink, really depends on the shade of it and the rest of the outfit I think.

Aramyr, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Come to the Midwest in the middle of the summer and simmer in your swamp-crotch, hat0rz.

But that has nothing to do with your legs right? Crotchless pants sound like the real solution. Or just chaps.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

But that has nothing to do with your legs right? Crotchless pants sound like the real solution. Or just chaps.

like this?

+, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

But that has nothing to do with your legs right? Crotchless pants sound like the real solution. Or just chaps.

Good point. Still, more surface area for my body to evaporate sweat: better. Then again, I'm that guy that walks around topless in the summer at every available opportunity. I'm sort of a DON'T, a lot of the time.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't have to worry about the shorts issue, because I can wear skirts all summer long. Mwah ha ha!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Bring back the kilt!

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

i like chocolate brown with blues and greens.

i like shorts at the beach or on a body buried in the ground.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

What do 19 year old girls wear? I'm so confused. I was just looking thru Teen Vogue and its all Imitation of Christ, Balenciaga, Proenza Schouler, etc, etc. I thought they all wore Wet Seal and Delias??

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah they do. The Wet Seal/Delia's/Forever 21 knockoffs of all that crap.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

i like shorts at the beach

but the beach is a state of mind

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

do you think its because they actually like it? because their friends like it? or because its all they can afford. im so confused. its all so horrible.

like do 19 year old girls even know who Chanel, Marc Jacobs, As Four, Stella McCartney even are? its like Teen Vogue even for teens?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Imitation of Christ

richard butler has his own clothing line now?

(i am also firmly in the no-shorts-camp - i've worn jeans to the beach before and GOD HELP ME I'LL DO IT AGAIN)

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

i just got paid. i need to go shopping. everything is on sale.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

My housemates read Teen Vogue and I too am repulsed by the fashion spreads, $450 for this, $275 for that. It's ridiculous. My housemates are in their early twenties. So maybe teens don't read it after all, in which case my outrage is misplaced. I am a much bigger fan of Elle Girl which also has the ridiculously impossible to get unless you are a whiny spoiled bitch clothes, but also has a bunch of .. CRAFTSY features about how to imitate the latest runway trends with hot glue and scissors!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't know jack (well, actually I'm lying) about Balenciaga, but I can tell you that The Olsen Twins carry the bags. Why? Because I read People (I actually don't). So, Teen Vogue/People/Elle Girls is just training 12 year olds (because 15 year olds+ read Cosmo/etc) to become brand whores from the start. And the seasonal trends are literally everywhere nowadays. You can buy boho chic knockoffs at Old Navy and Target. So, you can be 17 and know the labels from the fashion spread captions, but have the trend for cheap.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

i've felt this way for the past three months! though i'm hoping these sales will continue into august as i don't wish to splurge yet

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

(HINT HINT H&M)

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

i'm flipping thru this teen vogue. its hilarious. they have a profile on some 16 year fashionista in boston who likes trovata and mint. i like her! i actually kinda like this magazine. im going to subscribe

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

h&m is already so cheap! if you wait for the sales, the only sizes they will have left are XXXXXXXXL

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

my super-chic roommate from freshman year told me i have a very "marc jacobs style" and i just looked at the MJ website and i can't see myself wearing any of this shit! i'm still trying to figure out what the hell he meant by that

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

like this?

OMG, that's exactly what I need for the beach!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Teen Vogue, Elle Girl, & Cosmo Girl are like my favorite mags. They seem to mix the pricey with the non-pricey more than some of their adult versions. Also, especially for Teen Vogue & Elle Girl, their editorials are really great. They have such a charming je ne sais quoi. Like, every month, it's the same take on a Parisian gamine theme, but it manages to remain fresh. Most of my lady friends at the VV were also devout fans of these tweener mags--could it be their market is actually late 20s/early 30s? I once had a chance to do some freelance copyediting for Elle Girl; alas they sent my resume to Rolling Stone and I never heard from them again.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 7 July 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

btw, helmut lang sample sale and the location of the old store. got jeans for 40. jean jackets for 50. pants are all 60. coats are 200. blazers are all 150. shoes are all 60. accessories are 15. go go go

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

i really only need shirts and underwear (and maybe ONE ONE ONLY ONE pair of jeans), and helmut lang trips my fancy-dar somewhat, but i'll give it a go i guess. where is the old store?

joseph (joseph), Friday, 8 July 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

its on greene between prince and spring. its probably really picked over by now, but they seemed to be putting new stuff on the racks. i got this silver skinny tie that i was eyeing at jeffrey that was like $175 - for only $10!

helmut lang jeans are great too. if u find one that fits, get it!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 July 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

ME NAN CAN GET AWAY WIHT WARING NEXT TO NOTHIN,I ALWAYS TELL HER WELL YOUVE GOT TEH FIGURE FOR IT PET,THEN ME OTHER NAN COMES IN HH

GARU G, Friday, 8 July 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

hah, i feel fairly uncomfortable in really hoity-toity clothing stores but i might give it a shot. plus i will have been paid by lunchtime tomorrow!

joseph (joseph), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

there at least will be lots of hot guys to ogle while they try on pants out in the open since there arent any fitting rooms. anyways, its like a big empty store with boxes of clothes laying around. no sales people to look down on you for wearing like last season's clothes, or something.

come see me dj at happy ending later on friday, and wear your brand new helmut lang suit. free vodka 10-11, which is also when im dj'ing... after me are mattie and gabe from rapture. then after that is the crazy afterparty in the basement of a chinese restaurant in an office building on wall street.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

only if you come see ME DJ (for the first time EVAH meaning i probably won't be very good and i'm not even going to try beatmatching which is just as well since we're using cd decks anyway) at skinNY on monday! we've got a cute flyer with a bunny and everything!

(haha happy ending wouldn't let me in for the afterparty for the film festival FOR WHICH I WORKED wtf)(maybe they won't remember me?)

joseph (joseph), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

ha! well i'm burning a bunch of cd-r's now to play since i only own two records. a baxendale 7" and the r.kelly "feelin' on yo' booty (the remixes)". i dont think mattie knew what he was getting himself into when he asked me to dj.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah in the next 72 hrs or so i have to burn a fantastic amount of cd-rs. i've been buying some 12"s of late, but def. not an evening's worth

i somehow managed to COMPLETELY WALK BY the HL store on prince just now while i was looking for it, btw (which was maybe a good thing as i only had about ten minutes of my lunch break left). also, h&m and urban both lack cool men's underwear and this upsets me terribly.

joseph (joseph), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
i got a suit, and the suit pants arrived cuffed, which i don't like. is it reasonable to get rid of the cuffs or are suit pants supposed to be like that?

(i don't like pleats either, but that seemed to be unavoidable.)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm fond of cuffs but then my fashion sense is stuck in the 20's and 30's. There's absolutely no reason whatsoever not to have someone simply hem your pants at the appropriate length without cuffs.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

cuffs generally have a shortening effect on the legs, which can be preferable if you have a short waist & long legs. it's generally a matter of personal taste, though. it sounds like the sort of problem your average dry-cleaner tailor would be able to diagnose and fix.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I have a question of my own, actually. In a couple weeks, for business reasons I won't go into right here, I'm going to have to wear this shirt in public:

http://i22.ebayimg.com/02/i/05/e4/ac/4e_1_b.JPG

My question is: How can I incorporate this shirt into a style that isn't completely wack? I couldn't do the whole hip-hop style thing.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. The only thing that could ever possibly 'go' with is OG Vision Street Wear pants from 1986... Skate Or Die!

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

I think that the business reasons that involve wearing that shirt actually need to be delved into, ASAP.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. The only thing that could ever possibly 'go' with is OG Vision Street Wear pants from 1986... Skate Or Die!

Awww that reminds me of my percussionist/skater crush from 9th-10th grade. I'd probably still swoon over anyone wearing one of those VSW T-shirts and flipping hair out of his eyes.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sure that M White looks fantastic in his cuffed trousers, he always does. most people don't. get thee to a tailor.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that's what i was thinking.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Word to the wise. Regardless of your affection for cuffs, never ever wear them with formal wear. The cognoscenti will notice.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

"The cognoscenti will notice."

I Love I Love Everthing.

loopy, Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

My question is: How can I incorporate this shirt into a style that isn't completely wack?

Buy it fitted, wash it a couple times to fade/shrink, uh, wear ripped jeans, maybe a longer sleeve shirt under it... man, it's still gonna be bad, but at least don't wear it with the colors all bright & new..

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

I CANNOT stop laughing about that shirt.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't that the shirt in the 36 Mafia video?

ghostsofoldeilx, Friday, 20 January 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

I bought lots of pin-stripey things recently: can I mix subtle pin-striped pants a more pronounced pin-stripe shirt? I think guys do this, but they usually have a suit jacket... Actually, the shirts may not be pin-striped, they are just vertical stripes.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

My question is: How can I incorporate this shirt into a style that isn't completely wack?

Dark suit (single-breasted) and a pair of sneakers. For real.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

it's traditional for suit pants to be cuffed, but permissible for them to be uncuffed. the latter might be more appropriate in a more contemporary industry/environment.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

I feel the pull of the no-cuff suit, and have at least one, but most of mine are cuffed, and I gotta say they don't look as funny when hiked up due to sitting/leg-crossing.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

can I mix subtle pin-striped pants a more pronounced pin-stripe shirt?

I think you can, but I'd probably try to avoid it when possible. Pin-stripes can go, however, with checks.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

best advice ever.

also, shorts are a necessity in hot summer months.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

I bought an extra slim dress shirt that isn't snug on me except around my shoulders, though only if I raise my arms above shoulder height, in which case the shirt rises up out of my pants 3 inches. If I went with a looser fit, eg normal slim fit, that should be less of a problem, yes? (Arm raising is germane to this dilemma because I want to wear the shirt while dancing.)

Jack Lacan (Leee), Thursday, 27 June 2013 15:48 (twelve years ago)

no way to know unless you try it on at the store, all the different mftrs have different cuts for their 'slim fits'

乒乓, Thursday, 27 June 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

it sounds to me (sight unseen) like either the armscye is too long (the armhole is hole is too big) and/or the sleeves are actually set into the body in a neutral 'down' position. the latter is probably more likely, but in either case there's not much you can do for it. sizing up or choosing a different cut or brand may help with the untucking problem.

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 27 June 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

the armhole is hole is too big

haha i can't proofread for shit
