OMFG why had I not heard anything about this until now? Final Fantasy 7's the only RPG I've actually taken the time to play properly, so it must be brilliant. This is going to be incredible.

astropatty (adr), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't get it.
Is this a movie movie?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

you bet your sweet ass it is: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dvd/ff7ac/

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Does this relate at all to the previous FF movie?

(and thanks for the saying my ass is sweet!)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so, Huk; I have no idea why they're going retro in this fashion, but I'm a massive enough dork to be excited by it.

Sweet like a potato pie.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

This looks absolutely awful.
Will there be

a) a reference to Phoenix Down
b) FIR2
c) Sid
d) a flying boat

Bonus points if the first half hour is a tutorial explanation of "fighting" and "job system" by an old man.

TOMBOT, Monday, 4 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

There sure are a lot of shots with face-covering cloaks, turned backs, hair in eyes, and shaky cameras!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Advent children! Is that like advent chocolate?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Bite their heads off first like Easter Bunnies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm still wondering if it's true that the Square/Enix merger happened b/c Enix essentially bailed out Square after the Final Fantasy fiasco went sour...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Look, I pissed on Star Wars, but these guys are old friends! I miss Aeris! Don't tell me they'll fuck this up!

Okay, they almost certainly WILL fuck this up. Maybe it'd be better to watch it in Japanese? The story will make more sense that way...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

dude, when is it NOT better to watch in japanese? i still hold that the FF flick woulda been fine had it been in japanese, b/c cockamamie psuedospiritual pseudoscience always goes down better in subtitles.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i'm surprised by how much of that brought back memories of the game eg: look it's big and daft! (our name for the big guy with the gun on his arm), but OU EST LE CHOCOBO??? and also the dreadfully stilted "funny" dialogue???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

ゲームソフトとして発売し、全世界で968万本を記録した「FINAL FANTASY VII」。その完全続編が、映像作品「FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN」となって、9月14日(水)に発売決定!

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

look it's big and daft! (our name for the big guy with the gun on his arm)

How brilliant would it be if you could type the names in on the DVD menu? I'll spend half the film coming to terms with the fact that "Patrick" isn't actaully the main character's name, and "Bumhole" isn't the gun-arm guy.

astropatty (adr), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

PLZ SAY MR. T IS BARRET'S VOICE ACTOR

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

(and Lance Bass as Sephiroth, obv.)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

well, that's true. i mean, this have been in dev-land for what, 2 years?

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I just watched the trailer, and I must say I am happy that Square is making FF movies rather than games because the CG scenes have been the franchise's only mark of improvement since FF7 (whereas the quality of gameplay has plummeted dramatically). Also, I smile at the progmetaled-out version of "One-Winged Angel" that plays during the trailer, though I pray to God that Uematsu hasn't done the same thing with the remainder of the score. (Incidentally, the arrangement of this same piece in Dear Friends is the most evil-sounding thing in the world.)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Google "Yuffie's Chocobo" and, with a vivid enough imagination, all of your ardor for this movie will flee.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't this the one where one of the main characters was a tiger or something?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes! He sucked, though.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I loved that tiger guy! Way more than gun arm douche.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I just watched the trailer for this, it was friggin a billion minutes long. It could be good. Kinda.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Where's the fun in Sephiroth if his haircut isn't an off-turquoise Escher painting?

Michael Philip Philip Philip Avoidant (Ferg), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I realise that the answer is probably Wearing A Black Coat And Stabbing Women, but still.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Avoidant (Ferg), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
ff7 = total snoozefest if you havent played the game. should have known, really

don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

compared to what? games released 8 years later?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

this out yet?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385700/releaseinfo

imdb says it hit japan two weeks ago and the U.S. on last tuesday. Anybody seen it yet?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't there already a film called Final Fantasy? And wasn't it a big flop? How come they've made another one?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

coz the one with that name wasn't really a Final Fantasy flick, but "Bizarre Japanese CGI Sci-Fi Soul-sucking Adventure" is a rough translation for a title, so they went for the FF brand.

it's a shame, too. apparently, it killed off Square's movie division.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

So the first movie wasn't based on a computer game, and this one's supposed to be better because it is?!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

So the first movie wasn't based on a computer game, and this one's supposed to be better because it is?!

exactly!

it's not so much that the first one was the worst film ever, but the fact that it was actually shared the title with the most popular/worshipped RPG series in the world resulted in expectations being a bit high...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Haha, you must live in a different universe than I if you have high expectations for movies based on computer games. Then again, I haven't played any games for about 15 years.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

doing well.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah "the spirit within" or whatever it was called wasn't all that bad. it had a pretty good story and the CG was outstanding. the only problem i had with it, was that one of the character's looked like ben affleck.

this was supposed to be out on the 13th but got delayed till next month. you can download it on torrentspy, but i'm gonna wait till it comes out.

Creez (Creez), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

who says i had high expectations?

do you have any expectations for movies based on comic books?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I hope the movie is 10 hours long, with 8 hours devoted to levelling up.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Including 3 hours of upgrading weapons & armor, stocking up on Phoenix Downs, etc.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I want to be able to SEE the Materia slots on these WEAPONS, y'allz.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

And there had better be a floating cartoon hand over Cloud's head at all times.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

That way, the movie would give Marxist critics something to do.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

or "Paul-is-dead" theorists

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Do you need to find a save point to pause the movie?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

it would be cool if it kept all the mistranslations in as well. "he are really sick". "keep goin'? off course!".

rio natsume, Monday, 19 September 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Anybody seen it yet?

yes. me. and its a total snoozefest if you havent played the game. sorry for not making clear which ff7 i meant. the moogle doll and the ff6 battle melody ringtone were mildly amusing tho (= the only references i understood, and this %$§%&§ bitch is all references)

don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Monday, 19 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

at least the animation has moved up from 'bad cgi simulation of thunderbirds puppets' to 'near photorealistic simulation of thunderbird puppets'

don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Monday, 19 September 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Bah, you have to wait until the credits to see a chocobo, and even then they're blurry and small.

I enjoyed it though.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

I just watched this and loved it!

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I loved it too! it is complete fanservice (minus any sexx0ring/n00dity etc), nothing but pretty and motorcycle chases and big fights and wacked-out spirituality bobbins and general goodness.

Also, the best limit break ever!

spontine (cis), Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)
