I'm seeing this tonight (probably). Tell me how awesome it is as I've only seen the preview.

morgan freeman's new penguin movie

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

still haven't seen it, did you see it in France Ammy?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

this penguin movie is completely fucking outstanding

if I have an issue, it's with the title. although they do spend a great deal of their time marching, just as often they're flopping over onto their bellies and scooting along the ice with their flipperwings at top speed. that'd be my only issue though.

I might have to see this penguin movie again very soon.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this movie is classic. It's mind-blowing what those penguins go through.

My question is where did the camera crew sleep? Is there gear that will allow you to stay warm when it's 80F below 0 and there's a blizzard going on?

Also, why don't a penguin's claws freeze? they're constantly on the snow/ice.

STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IT, NEED TO GET WITH THE PROGRAM EVIDENTLY

I want to see this. I saw Murderball last night instead! Very different movie!

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I am going to see this tomorrow.

Tinman: Set to Self-Destruct (cprek), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

if this came out in the 1920s there'd be some sheet music for the "the march of the penguins" with really awesome cover art.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

This movie broke my fucking HEART! It also made me realize more than ever before exactly how easy our lives are. It is also really gut-bustingly funny in places. It was amazing to see in a really crowded theater, too, with all the "awwwww"s and "NOOOOOO!"s and laughter and applause etc. I would absolutely recommend everyone see this movie.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Also, I want a baby penguin:

this looks so much better than Winged Migration (which was pretty but pointless and sometimes just cruel)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

True. I hardly remember Winged Migration. I feel like if the whole point was not to have any narration or even helpful titles to identify the birds, that's a stupid point. Who was that movie for? Professional birdwatchers who also happen to be cinematographers?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I liked Winged Migration, but I liked M O the P more.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Honestly I was expecting much much more. I don't understand what this movie has over any other National Geographic documentary other than some star narration from Morgan Freeman.

Tinman: Set to Self-Destruct (cprek), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Winged Migration had no narrative whatsoever, it seemed to be just random shots of flying birds. I thought it would follow individual flocks during a full migration but it sure didn't do that. And I didn't need to see the little bird get mired in an oil slick while the camera hung on it floundering.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I was floored. It was absolutely stunning. Highly highly highly recommended.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Is there much penguin suffering or death in it? Suitable for little kids?

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

There are 5 scenes that come to mind that deal with death, 2 of which were due to predators and may be unsuitable for children (albeit nature at work, so YMMV).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

It's actually for me, I don't want to cry in public.

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

one scene shows an adult penguin who's gotten lost on the march and is wandering off into the hills to die alone, which usually prompts audience members to scream 'Put down the camera and fucking kick down some help you heartless frenchmen' and you might not want your kids to hear such profanity

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

okay here are the 5 OH NO NATURE IS CRUEL scenes as i remember:

1) the lone penguin who migrated too late into winter (he disappears behind a small peak of ice FWIW)
2) the clumsy transfer resulting in the fumbled egg (and the closeup freeze that follows)
3) the chick who either hatched to early or was lost during the 2nd blizzard (another 2-3 close-up pause)
4) the seagull/pelican and the chick.. :-(((((
5) the seal

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Just saw this -- music and narration was pretty bad/cheesy, but otherwise very interesting nature doc.

The thing that surprised me most, actually, was the way the one grieving mother goes crazy and then tries to steal someone else's chick, and the way the "community" bands together to prevent it -- you could almost argue that they penguins had social mores or standards or something.

Although I'd still like to see it, a point Jonathon Ross made last night is that its success shows the paucity of well made nature documentaries in the US rather than it being particuarly well made.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

ten years pass...

It's fun to watch this and think of Morgan Freeman doing the narration in his typecast God role just being all "look what I did"

"you think you have it rough"

"what happens next oh it's this shit right here"
