This is the thread for the Memphis-based pimps-and-hoes-and-hip hop film, written and directed by undie, er, indie filmmaker Craig Brewer. http://cs.cementhorizon.com/archives/craig-brewer.jpg

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

It's very well reviewed!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I read the title in the same pace and sound as the "MUSCLE AND HATE" lyric from Nitzer Ebb.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

The clip I saw on MTV looked awful

HUSTLE!
HUSTLE!

there was a lot of hype and a bidding war at Sundance, but then again the same could be said for The Spitfire Grill. I think Armond White had something to say about this film in an essay from a few months back and at best I'm ambivalent about this flick.

This guy's next one is about a white nymphomaniac who must be cured by an old black bluesman of her "problem" and it's called, er, Black Snake Moan.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I've got high hopes for this one. Mr. Brewer is talented and probably one of the nicest people you could meet. His two previous films (low, low budget) showed great promise - he's an ace with characters and soundtracks. I think it opens in Memphis tonight but unfortunately I'm out of town.

this bit does sound rather dicey though:
This guy's next one is about a white nymphomaniac who must be cured by an old black bluesman of her "problem" and it's called, er, Black Snake Moan.

Will(iam), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

the "real but NOT TOO REAL" balancing act this script tries to pull off is very awkward – the whole movie winds up being set in a weird vacuum, during the spaces BETWEEN all the stuff that actually makes life hard for these people.

or it's just a movie about the nicest pimp ever.

BLACK PEOPLE BE STRUGGLIN'

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

also ladies will be delighted to learn that pregnancy = quarantine

(but hey at least you get unhoified during it!!)

jones (actual), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

What the hell role does DJ Qualls have to play in all of this?

Jie Nirtroddin, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

i saw it with jones last night, enjoyed a lot of it but had a bunch of problems. like the man says it is essentially a pimp with a heart of gold movie (with a couple hookers with hearts of gold)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

I like how you can "pimp djay's car" on the website. I'm pretty much sold on it and now wonder if seeing it back to back with "Me and you and everyone we know" would make my head explode or not (they're playing at the same "art theatre" here.) Yes!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 23 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

i liked this a lot! the recording scenes were great.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I like the sounds of a movie that is supposed to have a LOVEABLE PIMP as a main character, because I do believe there is no such thing.

A hooker with a heart of gold, now that's something I could get into.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

umm i wouldn't say he has a heart of GOLD exactly. he does some pretty awful things.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

not too awful

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i mean relatively speaking

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i did think the recording scenes were great

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i mean basically it's rocky

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i still haven't seen crash so terence howard was a revelation. he is very good in this.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

there's something very diplo about this whole thing, i sense

gear (gear), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Do NOT see Crash under any circumstances.

I saw this last night, right after I saw the Wedding Crashers. I found both movies somewhat comparable in terms of overall quality, honestly.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

terence howard beats up ludacris in both Hustle And Flow AND Crash, btw. Hope that's not ruining anything.

Really though, DON'T see Crash.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

"Hustle & Flow" is getting hugely good reviews, and it just looks like a bad VH1 movie to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

It's...just a bit better than that.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Is Craig Brewer the American Shane Meadows? he looks the part.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Plus the whole indie-movie-ethos thing. I don't think you can beat using stolen shopping carts as dollies, though.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

It was better than the Wedding Crashers, but far too weird and awkward and shambolic to actually be "good". The recording scenes are quite good though and I could imagine a good movie focusing on that and the actual economics of the Southern mixtape/promotion/stripclub circuit, but instead focusing so much attention on the frankly laughable pimp story-arch (whoever said this guy is the "nicest pimp in the world" wasn't kidding) severely crippled the movie. DJ Quall's was also horrible ("Look at me I will exist solely to provide a white focal point so indie kids like the director can feel okay about this and provide generic arguments justifying crunk's misogyny.")

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Terence Howard was in TWO previews for other movies right before this movie (the John Singleton movie and something else I forget. . . Roll Bounce maybe?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

No I am wrong. He's in the 50 Cent movie.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Which looks BAD

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Roll Bounce looked fun!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

i liked dj qualls - even delivering those lame let's-just-smoke gag lines he's so likeable!! anyway i think the imaginary indie kids alex is talking about are more likely to object to that character's presence than to relate to him

i still feel the need to point out that this film's de facto love interest spends the entire picture literally barefoot and pregnant

jones (actual), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

what did everyone like so much about the recording scenes btw?

jones (actual), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

i like how dj qualls has a built-in hip-hop monicker!

how has taryn manning been typecast as the white-girl-who's-down-like-a-black-girl? is it her husky voice?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 24 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

this film's de facto love interest spends the entire picture literally barefoot and pregnant
hahaha OTM...
and yeah, I thought the recording scenes were fine, but H&F seemed to try and milk them for all they were worth and then some.
Perhaps a little schmaltzy and naive in some respects, but overall I dug it. The DP (Amy Vincent?) did a bang up job.

Will(iam), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

ok you guys are being a bit silly now. if he was a good pimp he'd probably enjoy his job more and there'd be no basis for a movie.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

also, look for my boy J3ff P0p3 as the reticent john during the opening sequence!! And DJ Paul as the unfriendly neighbor! And Al Kapone (aka Al Kapeezy) as a Skinny Black hanger-on!

Will(iam), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Is Terrence Howard as good as he was in Ashanti's "Foolish" video? The only good thing that cipher has ever done was the video for that song.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Al Kapone released the Memphis Drama series of rap comps! They're great. Havent seen this movie yet.

deej.., Monday, 25 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I thought DJ Qualls was less objectionable than having the self-empowering heroine be the only white ho. (though I didn't find either bothersome, aside from Manning's acting ability)

Completely enjoyable, but I'm not sure why - the way they arrived at the happy ending was great (if somewhat predictable), the two 'fictional' songs were fantastic and the rest was just good enough to keep me entertained even when it was ridiculous (nicest pimp ever, kick the mouthy woman out just to show he has a pimp-side, Ludacris in the bar, etc.)

The '70s credits and opening speech were almost David Gordon Green-esque.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

i thought the fake tracks were as crappy as they usually are in new music movies but here it sort of worked in the story's favour at least until that last scene with the guards

jones (actual), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

i mean come on that "whole lotta hos jumpin ship" chorus is terrible

jones (actual), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

deej and i saw this tonight. i liked it!

it seemed like it could've been WAY more cornier than it was. every time it veered in this direction, it was undercut with another, more complicated scene.

only time i thought "nicest pimp ever" was when he first tells taryn manning "we're in charge" and has her put her hands on the steering wheel. otherwise: i mean, he does a few things that aren't that flattering.

The '70s credits and opening speech were almost David Gordon Green-esque.

YES. had the same thought.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

haha, this is the first time i've seen taryn manning, but apparently she was in both 8 mile and crossroads. heh.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

nothing in this movie really made sense. it never connected with me at all, so while it wasn't absurdly corny it also didn't give me any emotional meat.

also the songs pretty much sucked.

luda was good tho. he should act more.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

the luda scene was hands-down the best in the movie

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

it was so obv that he didn't know skinny black that it was weird to me that anyone in the film ever thought otherwise.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah!! i thought that was supposed to be obvious until it became a plot point

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think he really knew him knew him, but thought maybe it was like one of those cases where if he mentioned his name and where he went to school, Skinny might have a vague recollection of him. I assumed that all the other characters were operating under that assumption, too -- like, well, you can always give it a shot, it's a better connection than nothing.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

But yeah, then Key was like "You never really knew Skinny, did you?" That was kinda weird.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I think it was supposed to be obvious to the audience, but his friends are blinded by their dreams/big opportunity they believe his boast and it's a bit letdown in the end.

I'd like to see Taryn Manning in any other role just once.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

i know!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Fuck that "Whoop That Trick" wasn't like a 3-6 greatest hit or something but thats hypnotized minds on the beat, its a great song.

deej.., Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I didn't have a problem with the songs, either! Maybe I'm naive, but I feel like a lot of regional hip-hop probably sounds like that!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

a lot of regional hip-hop (if the region were Texas) sounds much, much worse than that.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

What (16x)

[Chorus]
Whoop that trick (16x)

[Djay]
I'ma make these suckers recognize I ain't playin' hoe
If you violate off the top trick you gotta go
I den held in a lot of shit and I'm bout to flip
Now I think it's time to show you bitches who you fuckin' with
DJay that's the name and I came to bring the pain
Ana on my chest got me bustin' at you lemon lames
You ain't know you fuckin' with a street nigga
From the gutta pimp tight slash drug dealer
Born and raised in the "M" Memphis Tennessee
Before it's said and done you bitches gon remember me
This only the beginning I got a lot to say
It's been a long time and you got hell to pay
Ain't no love hoe just bring it the door
I'm bar none let my nuts hang to the floor
So if you want some this is your death wish
Better come correct cause I came to break you off hoe

[Chorus]

[Djay]
You think I won't beat that trick whoop that trick
Got me acting buck and shit
Hoes telling me to calm down but I'm like fuck that shit
I'm already on that Hypnotiq and that Grey Goose
A couple shots of Hen that just gave me another boost
I'm feeling electrified you can see it in my eyes
Shirt soaking wet looking like I just got baptized
Sloppy drunk like a wino at a liquor store
But crunk like some sanctified folks catchin' the Holy Ghost
I don't think you understand this one right here might get banned
Setting off a riot like we living in a battlestand
But this the dirty dirty and that's the way it go
Security be the main ones acting like some hoes
But you den fucked up you better call the the law
I'ma break this Moet bottle cross your fucking jaw
And that's for anyone that's for everyone disrespected D
Watch out boy cause you bout to get your ass beat

[Chorus]

[Djay]
I came to bust a nigga head leave him bloody red
Fighting for his life as they rush him to the Med
This what happens when you get caught up in the mix
All that jaw jacking got your ass in a bunch of shit
This that Memphis drama boy you know we came to get buck
I thought you came deep nigga where your backup
Your clique they some cowards they scattered out like roaches
That bottle cross your head got you leaking losing focus
See this is what we mean when we shut down the club
Niggaz started gangsta walking and we tear that bitch up
We some straight hood niggaz from the ghetto and the projects
Fuck the police cause we know we the suspects
Make you wonder what's next bitch guard your grill
If they play this in the club then they beat yo ass for real
My advice would be to chill M-Town niggaz sick
Get caught without a warning and get your ass whooped quick bitch

[Chorus]
Whoop that trick (7x)

gear (gear), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

the soundtrack was sold out at both of my local Best Buys this weekend, the only place that had it in-stock was Sam Goody in the mall for $21.99 (!).

I like how they credit the songs to Djay - is it actually Terrence Howard on the track?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, apparently. i mean his rapping just isn't that great and it's not like the lyrics are laughably bad, but they're nothing special -- especially the parts that should be rapped doubletime, he just can't pull it off and it drags. there's no rhythmic bite. also, the way he switches up between real hypnotized minds style chanting shouting monotone which he can sorta pull off and then a slightly more varied "storytelling" flow in the film is totally weird.

i bought em's performance of "thinking real hard and scrawling on a notepad" way more than howard's too, as far as that goes.

i'm sure some actor playing a tortured novelist in a small college town undergoing a mid-life crisis has topped them both though.

also like in "whoop that trick" and elsewhere i was struck by this weird structure of the lyrics -- like half on a single train of thought, then just stopping midway and deciding to do something else, and also very low on punchlines and creative metaphors and etc. generally. so i mean a da da Da da da DA da rhythm with rhymes fairly widely spaced keeps you from quite falling into "my name is barney rubble" but on the other hand the "i'm just sayin' what i'm thinking/and dj qualls on the piano plinking/cause i'm terrence howard rapping/and filmmaking is what's happening/my character is really really mad/because he's a pimp with very few hoes/but this rapping is the greatest chance he's had/to spit many bars of obscene prose" quality to the whole thing is sorta offputting.

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 4 August 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Al Kapone wrote "Whoop That Trick" & "Hustle & Flow (It Ain't Over)"; "Hard For a Pimp" is Three-Six. But yeah, that's definitely T. Howard's vocals. For better or worse.

Will(iam), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

who produced whoop that trick?

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 4 August 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

DJ qualls feat. a. anderson

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I thought this movie ruled...Terrence Howard's SOUTHERN GANGSTA INFLECTION killed!!

RADICAL.

It made $20+ mln and only cost like 1/10 of that, so not too bad for a movie that never had a wide release.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i thought it would make 50 million. after the first three weeks it disappeared. i'm surprised they didn't go wider than 1,000 theaters
