london and paris head to head in the final round!

FORTY FIVE MINUTES of waffling punditry between now and the announcement!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm rather excited. I want tickted to the madison whichever city its in.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

The Head of the Department came out and asked us if we cared. I care. Slightly. But I want it to be given to Paris.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

There's a little PA stand by Stratford station. They had people (local artists preumably) performing from 9am or so. As I passed the MC asked the small crowd to "give it up for EXL!" before in a somewhat quieter voice adding "it's jazz..."

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather it went to Paris as well. Or Stonybridge.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

I want it to go to London but that may have more to do with my dislike of Chirac rather than any latent patriotism in me.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I think it'll be fun! Bring it on!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

My patriotism is exactly what's fuelling my desire for the thing to go to France!

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah I was set to move before 2012 if it came to NYC. good luck!

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

How close will it be % wise: place you bets now !

Winner/ Loser

51/ 49
52/ 48
53/ 47
54/ 46
55/ 45

and who will the winner be?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

there is an live webcast on the olympic website, but unsurprisingly it's a bit stuttery, i have decamped to talksport of all places (can't get 5live at work)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Ed on the madison love. Track cycling is fantastic to go and see live, but it must be something else at the Olympics.

Sort of worried about the British flair for cocking things up though, should London ever get the games. And more worried still about dodgy developments getting through on the back of a successful bid.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I love Paris, but the citizens of both cities have been well up themselves about this, so I'd like it to go to the Moon in a surprise tiebreak decision.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Why not hold the Olympics in Jersey ! if the vote is so close ! Ha !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Bergerac would never allow it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I'd like it to go to the Moon

Looking forward to some pretty impressive new High/Long Jump records.

Mayor of the Moon (robster), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

ISLE OF WIGHT!

can you still fit the population of the world on the isle of wight?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Yes. And there's a Ryde where you walk. I don't think the inhabitants of the Isle of Wight would take kindly to the appearance of so many funny-looking foreigners all at once though.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Paris, please let it go to Paris. Please. Please. Or even further away. Not Europe. Not Earth. But please God, not London.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

(I care, but perhaps not in the way Seb and Ken would wish)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

ahaha i'm loving this le monde correspondent on channel 4...

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

I doubt I'll be living in London in 2012 so I'm not that bothered either way.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Actually, that's a good point. With my luck, I'll be living in Paris by 2012.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

that would be lucky

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Just in time for the Olympics!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

I doubt I'll be living in 2012, so shouldn't really be bothered either way. However, if London gets it then most of Walthamstow Marshes will be built over with HORRIBLE YUPPIE RESIDENCES for HORRIBLE YUPPIES and their HORRIBLE DOGS so really it ought to be Paris.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

i've been boycotting anything in the supermarket with 'support london's olympic bid' printed on it. ditto wimbledon. all it really entailed was digging out cereal boxes or bottles of squash from the back of the shelf so i didn't actually have to go without anything. (my kind of protest - pointless)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone actually spoken to anyone living in London who wants this to go ahead? I'm starting to feel that Bid Backers are entirely mythical.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

That's what my colleague is saying that the French are saying.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

I would like to see the olympics here, I like the olympics.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really opposed to it being in London, but not too fussed either way.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

i would also like the olympics here, i like the olympics too.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I've decided to Back The Bid for its last five minutes.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

I intend to compete in them, if they're in London. Haven't decided which sport yet, but I'm sure it'll all pan out.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

To be fair I wouldn't mind it being in paris, it's only down the road.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

My artist friends who just bought somewhere right on the canal are probably GOING to be happy but not today because the BT guy Georgina is waiting for is nowhere to be seen and probably caught up in tailbacks.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

I DON'T want it in London. I would prefer for it not to happen at all, but if it MUST, then NIMBY, BABY!!!

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

is london!

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

RAH!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

The pub just went nuts downstairs! Is London!

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

This means Jacques Chirac will be really pissed off, and millions of Africans will now starve.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Bah.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

wooh

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, how does an events organiser whose contract is approaches its end apply for a job organising the olympics?!

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

hurrah!

seb coe in actual useful for something shocker...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Not in MY fucking backyard. Praise the Lord.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

There was a point a year or so ago when I was actually psyched at the idea of a NY Olympics...but then those asinine boondoggle stadium proposals got in the way of my dreams and I have been a crushed man ever since.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Bloody 'ell. There was a cheer from the other end of the office.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Is your end French?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

yay for furthering madchen's career!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Chirac will be cross but it's his own bloody fault for being so unsporting about the British this week.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

while we hired some australians to do our unsporting for us?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

it was Tom wot won it.

this got announced over the Tannoy at morrisons whilst i was there. fuckers.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

What did you buy?

PS - been so busy not been able to get back on track with THE PROJECT but hopefully this week...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Damn, that's crazy. By 2012 that means it will have been 16 years since the Atlanta Summer Olympics, which I remember very well as the whole Southeastern United States was pretty excited about it.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

damn

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Kelly does that face again.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Madchen, I will only *not* be disappointed that London has the olympics if you are working on them.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Yup, my thoughts too.

Win London Back - Jobs For Madchen!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

OH COME ON THERE WONT BE AN OLYMPICS IN 2012 CUZ THATS WHEN THE WORLD ENDZ

latebloomer: the Clonus Horror (latebloomer), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

I trust the world will have the decency not to end until after the Olympics.

Masked Gazza, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

THANK YOU for NOT picking NYC. That is my main concern. Now bloomberg has less excuse to build that horrible Jets complex.

So who is going to have a big lofty flat for us to crash in 7 years?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

London is already a big Darwinian struggle where the fit survive and the weak are picked off by ravenous vultures, hawks and gulls. Who needs to put a stadium around it? Ah yes, the construction industry.

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

This is all a plot by polish plumber to keep themselves in work after Bulgaria joins the EU.
