FITE!

For me, Winter will always be superior because of the almight BIATHLON.

I enjoy watching Curling when stoned (excuse pun), but Summer has way more great events. Isn't the Biathlon kind of dull as a spectator sport?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Winter is better because it doesn't have lolitaesque gymnastics drama round the clock. And the US coverage finally admits that the US is crap at some winter sports and acutally shows other countries.

two words: hockey

Winter is better because it doesn't have lolitaesque gymnastics drama round the clock.

The lolitasque gymnastics is replaced by lolitasque figure skating!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I think because so many of the Winter events are against the clock, you don't get the same visceral thrill as you do watching a great 100m final.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I was very disappointed when I discovered that the biathlon didn't feature skiers attempting to fire on moving targets while bombing down the side of a mountain a top speed.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Now we're talking, Jordan! Razor-wire bobsled! Land mine luge! xxxpost

We occasionaly win gold at the winter olympics without roids so the summer olympics can blow me like an IOC member.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

The winter olympics are the plucky, less-rockist younger sibling of the summer olympics.

Then again, I guess most of the novelty events like ping-pong or Xtreme-whathaveya get slotted in summer, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Cool Runnings is a BRILLIANT film.

I love both Limpicks but as an ex-figure skater (wouldn't believe it from my figure NOW wouldyer), my loyalties lie with the beautiful winter sports. Figure skating, speed skating, ski-ing, SKI JUMP, luge, curling aaaaaaah lovely.

Man! I am so adding Cool Runnings to my Amazon wish list.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I think the Winter Olympics are more Rockist than the Summer Olympics.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Winter is great because you can actually follow everything that's going on. It's a more intimate affair amongst the snow-loving nations.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

BTW, Rufus, Ben Johnson jokes are so 1988. Coming from an American in 2005, OK, but from a Canadian, it's a bit sad.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I used to see him hanging around York whenever I was there for years afterwards.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

My uncle used to work out at the same health club as him. One day, they were both jogging on the track and my uncle lapped Big Ben. It was all he talked about for months.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

i think i cried at the end of cool runnings.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I know I did!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Is Jai-Alai an Olympic event yet?

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Winter is so so so superior. I may be alone here, but I LOVE watching DH ski racing. It's basically the most exciting sport on the planet! Plus, Bode Miller is the Greatest Athlete of All Time (true!) and a total dreamboat.

It's a more intimate affair amongst the snow-loving nations.

OTM.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Also: I feel like there's a stronger contingent of "recreational" sports represented at the winter games. Whereas I don't know a single javelin hobbyist.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

i'd prefer the summer games even if basketball was the only event.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

They should just have a "Best of the Olympics" Olympics.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

also if you don't like watching prepubecent girls jumping around in revealing outfits, summer games also have BEACH VOLLEYBALL with full grown womenfolk in BIKINIS jumping and diving and jiggling and whatnot. that's what sport is all about.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Summer Olympics. Oops OTM.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

plus field hockey!!!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

swimming is really exciting to watch on tv.
(this may be because i swam for 13 years of my life)

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

...you make a convincing argument, oops.

('bout volleyball, not field hockey)

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Winter Olympics are so fucking dull. It's just ice skating and more ice skating. I mean, you could say the same thing about the Summer Olympics and diving, but at least, hey, hot women in swimsuits.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

giboyeux have you seen some of the women on field hockey squads?!? and the skirts are pervilicious.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I just remembered how intimidating-looking SLALOMers thighs are!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

they're twigs compared to SPEEDSKATERers thighs!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

That is true. Apollo Ono to thread.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

The Winter Olympics will continue to be unrepresentative of Winter sports until they introduce Snowball Fighting, Doing Skids on the Pavement, and Mixed Doubles Writing Your Name in the Snow.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Whippin Shitties!

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Can we please get back to talking about Bode Miller and ski racing? Great, thanks.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Winter Olympics. Ice Hockey.

However, they always show hours and hours of fucking 'Ice Dancing'. That shit even makes figure skating seem hardcore.
