C/D: the bad American accent dubbing in MAD MAX

I say classic. It's very AI, and I like the thug voices for the Toecutter and Bubba Zanetti especially. Unfortunately, there's not much ambient sound so it's pretty lo-fi, very Godzilla.

Fuckin' DUD.

The police chief's speech to Max ordering him on vacation in "american" is priceless. Also the "Not me, Max!" speech by the guy cuffed to the burning car.

I think mad max makes me feel ill

Das Boot did the same thing... "Americans can't read!" I've never seen the real Mad Max so I don't know if it was inaudible or something, but the Australian accent is not very hard to follow (compared to Scottish or something...)

I don't think it was a matter of comprehension, but rather concerns over ghettoizing the film as "foreign" to the US market.

I heard there was so much slang in it that it would have been incomprehensible to Americans. The slang "language" was called "Strine" or something, which is apparently a bastardization of "Australian."

Does the dvd have both? I've grown sort of attached to the voices... "Stoned again! He's never gonna learn..." etc.

andy --, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

"That's not The Goose." Dud.

There's some cheesy scenes.. the nightclub singer, Max's wife playing sax... so bad.

I don't remember what the American dubbed version sounds like at all! We did catch the Australian original version on AMC a couple of weeks back though and I couldn't understand a goddamned thing any of those people said except for "this chain is high tensile steel blah blah blah" "blah blah Night Rider blah blah blah" and "Bronzies!! blah blah" But I guess that's basically the entire movie, isn't it?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

total DUD. i fucking love this movie and have been after the 'original' aussie version for ages. i picked up a bootleg DVD in bali, indonesia (close to, and frequented by, aussies) and even it only had the 'american' dubbing. i've only seen a tiny bit of the original audio version, and it was definitely better. indeed, you lose a lot of the ambient audio on the dubbed version.

the Australian accent is not very hard to follow (compared to Scottish or something...)
so OTM. it's not THAT hard to hear what they're saying, is it?

i should also say that my favourite thing about mad max - the cars! when i was in australia a couple months ago i was hoping to see lots of little suped-up cars around, which was of course wishful thinking. what WERE those cars, anyway? fords?

"The blower, Max! THE BLOWER!!!!"

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

There's a website that goes over all the cars from the first two movies... I think in the first one, the cars were a combination of Fords and Holdens (Australian-made GM company), and of course Kawasaki and Honda bikes. The second film had way more fabricated cars.. I think Max's Interceptor is in a museum in Europe now.

thanks andy - just saw that site on Alex's thread too. AWESOME.

so, the big car question is... taking sides:

Max's customised Interceptor (1973 Ford Falcon XB Coupe, V8 351)

or

The Nightrider's 1972 Holden HQ LS Monaro V8
http://www.madmaxmovies.com/cars/madmax/Nightrider/MonaroBrakes.jpg

gotta be the interceptor.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, he catches the Night Rider in his standard pursuit car, so we have to assume the Interceptor is even faster with the blower, right?
