you can adopt ideas for fun, but can you adopt emotions?

People are sometimes accused of just 'posing' as depressed, jaded, etc. Have you ever adopted an emotion for fun? Were others convinced? What were the consequences?

I once pretended to be crying on the street to impress a girl. She didn't notice but some of her friends did, and I think they were impressed.

When my grandparents took me to the shopping malls in San Fernando Valley every weekend when I was a wee one, I would always pretend I was mentally handicapped. They didn't like that.

I used to pretend to be a aour-faced curmudgeon. Unfortunately for me, the wind changed.

Sour, not aour.

Of course you can adopt emotions! Saying that one more emotion is more "real" than another one is crap, you're feeling it so it's real! And you can convince yourself to adopt [xXx] emotions all the time. IE I am haffing a miserable time listening to people talking about AUDITS over my head so I will pretend I am interested! I always pretend emotions. Then again I am not 4REAL. I am actually fake and made out of plastic WOOHAH!

Sarah, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i seriously don't know the difference between real and fake any more. spesh where i am concerned.

Why would I want to adopt an emotion? I've got too many of the damn things to deal with already.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to adopt a dolphin.

Or failing that, an otter.

This entire thread scans much better if you imagine the DC version of "Emotion" playing in the background.

Dan Perry, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No it doesn't . It works better with some Merzbow playing in the background. Then again can you play Noise in the background???? I don't think SOOOOO.

I know people who can pose as any emotion they wish, but I can't when I'm upset because the world then revolves around ME ME ME and MY GIANT PROBLEMS. It'd be pretty convenient and interesting and Wildean to adopt emotions at a whim, though.

I once went to a Halloween party as apathy.

Samantha, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to want to be a smart assed cynic type, i still do to an extent. if you try hard you will succeed. no doubt about that in my mind, very bad thing though.

I can't really do emotions on demand. My emotions don't really change that much...just kinda steady, somewhere between happy and disappointed.
