I think here might be yet another flaw in the SB system: if Cankles got a lot SBs for the same reason he got temp banned, he's actually been punished twice for the same crime. There's no way to prevent an overlap between a mod ban and SB ban.

i still like the idea of a suggest ban exchange - kinda like the way corporations trade pollution credits - ilxors could make agreements to transfer sb's to one another. Of course it would never be implemented, but i think it would be fun.

I think the SB system is pretty stupid, but the penalties aren't all that severe. To amass the number of SB bans (on top of mod-bans) cankles has, you have to consistently work at pissing people off.

I'd say that half of the people that have been sb'ed weren't really "working" at pissing people off.

I definitely agree that Cankles deserved to be temp banned by the mods, as he did post offensive shit. And if he keeps on doing that stuff again and again, the mods should eventually permaban him. But if he got a lot of SBs due to the same comments he was temp banned for (I don't know if this was the case, maybe a site mod could confirm?), then it seems the mod ban and the SB ban overlap, which doesn't sound fair.

I have plenty of problems with three strikes laws, though the majority are related to implementation and the societal context that leads people to commit crimes.

It's more like parole than three strikes.
SBs exist to get people to conform to a community standard. If someone doesn't learn to tone down their LOLracism or whatever got them banned in the first place, they aren't paying for their first crimes, they're still committing them.

It sucks when SBs come from being unpopular/voicing unpopular opinions - but at the same time, those people who got banned for that (gabbneb, Morbius, etc.) were being pretty confrontational.

That's not the type of self-censoring I've been doing. Mostly I've been trying to avoid the sort of personal quirks and bullheaded opinions that I thought (but can't be sure) got me SBed in the first place.
