Oh man. I probably read 8 or 10 of those 87th Precinct books at one point, I love 'em. The original NYPD Blue. RIP.

Me too, read a bunch of them as a weird mystery-obsessed kid, remember them being pretty good. Didn't he write "Blackboard Jungle," the first movie to have a rock song in it?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he did. He will be missed, I used to read a lot of his procedurals when I was younger.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

was that the first movie with a rock song or just the first rock-themed movie? i think the latter.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I think the former - isn't it about gangs in schools? Not really a rock-themed movie. But I could be wrong.

The 87th Precinct even had their own Moriarty-type character, The Deaf Man. And I loved how the various characters' relationships evolved from one book to the next. (Also, he wrote them over such a long span that it's interesting to contrast the early ones with the later ones in terms of the frankness of the dialogue, sexual situations, racial discussions, etc.)

My mum used to read then to me when I was about 11, because my English teacher recommended him to me. I remember hearing her voice describing a murder victim's "blonde pubic thatch". I was quite embarassed.

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

That's weird. My mom once had "a talk" with me about how the portrayals of sex in the mystery books I was reading weren't realistic, that men didn't treat women that way. She wasn't talking about Ed McBain books though.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

My mum wouldn't let me see Wild At Heart at 13/14 because the Daily Mail told her it was misogynistic.

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

So I went and watched it at my friend Luke's house because his parents were pot-smoking psychiatric professors who lived in Hampstead.

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I miss you, Luke.

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't allowed to watch R-rated movies so I'd go to my friend Kris's house. His family had 2 VCRs and illegally copied every movie they checked out. I mostly remember the Nightmare on Elm Street movies and some movie where Bronson Pinchot plays a psychic.

McBain/Hunter really ripped Hitchcock in a radio interview (Terry Gross maybe? she'll probably rerun it soon then) for the dialogue AH added to "The Birds" script. Esp Hedren's "hotel man from the East" monologue that sorta makes a link to Psycho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Today isn't the day for reacting as I normally would, but I love his books. I've read more by him than anyone else - I have over 80 of his books. A fantastically good writer of dialogue, and possibly the best writer of weather I've ever read.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

the best writer of weather I've ever read.

OTM!

Adam, I'll never see Angela the same way.

I really heart The Birds.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Adam, I'll never see Angela the same way.

Oh, you'll recover. I did!

And let's not forget Kurosawa's revamp of King's Ransom into High and Low...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

I watched that a couple of months ago and admit I was thinking "ok there's Lt. Byrnes, that's got to be Carella..." etc etc as the investigation went on.

WmC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Any recommendations about good places to start with him? The bibliography is O_O

Skatalite of Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 28 November 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

Been meaning to check these out for years, perhaps I'll pick some out at random to try.

Skatalite of Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 28 November 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

i prefer the earlier ones cuz they're leaner and faster. also less dark.
particularly remember liking The Heckler, Cop Hater, Give The Boys A Great Big Hand, and Lady Killer.
They're... pretty light, quick reads. I like them for that, but if your preference tends toward the grittier or more psycholigical, you might be disappointed.
