Right, so there are a colony of nerdy D&D-playing medeivalists who gather in Mount Royal Park every Sunday to run around screaming and slapping each with swords made of duct-taped iron bars and shields made out of the lids of recycling bins. Shit, there are even dudes with nerf arrows, flails, battle axes and big fuckin’ hammers. One guy had on an entire suit of chain mail armor.

Anyway, a cabal of local hipsters decided that this Sunday was going to be different. This Sunday, the hipsters were going to dress up like zombies and come marching out of the woods to engage the nerds in glorious battle. We were there to witness and record the hilarity that ensued...

Oh, those wacky Montreal zombie hipsters! Do their Neighbo(u)rhoodies have both english AND french slogans on them?

Them crazy Candians

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Montreal, the town that dignity forgot.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I was disappointed to see that none of the people pictured had gum drop eyes or licorice grins.

matlewis (matlewis), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Groups of hipsters should always be referred to as "cabals".

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

haha it would've been funnier if it had been a SCA festival and they had real swords

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

This confirms my longstanding theory that Montréal is the best place to live ever.

I love the Montreal hipster love of zombies. And also the hipster love of pirates! I didn't go to this fite/gathering, sadly, but saw the pics on m0ntrealshows board and they are great. Mtl is the greatest, it's true. e.g., on Wednesday I'm going to Kiss-me-oke - karaoke, kissing booth, spin the bottle, and dancing!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

So crushed I was away that weekend.
'hipsters' is misleading.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

oh man, why am I only hearing about this now

peter in montreal (spaces are allowed), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

'hipsters' as it's generally used seems to be the easiest word to employ, but yeah, it stands for things that Mtl zombies do not necessarily stand for (and even I wanted to do this, and I am not a 'hipster'.) I tend to use it with more endearment (and irony? oh lord).

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

haha it would've been funnier if it had been a SCA festival and they had real swords

They practise every Sunday at Casa Loma in case any zombies wish to attack the stables.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

'hipsters' as it's generally used seems to be the easiest word to employ,

well, yeah, and as any number of ILM threads have covered it, hipsters usually refers to a group of people who ain't too particularly hip. but it does apply to a certain subcultural group.

for example, saying "hipster zombies" clues the reader into how they're a different group than, say, "mook zombies."

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

these were DEFINITELY hipster zombies.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

can somebody finally fix the damn thread title, please?

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

but they WERE hipster zombies!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

ha fuckin' ha.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't change the thread title - it's perfect as it is, I mean, other wise it'd be all: hipsters vs larpers vs hipster nerds vs larp nerds vs zombie nerds vs music nerds vs anti-fashion fashion nerds vs non-nerd hipsters vs... well, it could go on forever. I also obviously use the word nerd with endearment as well...

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

The only change I could be bribed into making would be "...versus Neds of the Round table." And for that to happen Sean or Mark would need to get busy with the photoshop.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

far be it for me to kill a running joke, but it's at my expense, so i'm gunna kill it. Canada is usually spellt with three vowels.

Usually.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

hahaha!! i used internet sleight-of-hand to confuse everyone

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

incidentally the party i was promoting above turned out to be one of the best bashes of the year!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I was too fixated on Hipster zombies versus Neds of the round table part.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, leave it to ilx to overlook the spelling of a country's name in favour of arguing about semantics. whoo! oh, Canda, what a great place to be a hipsterish zombie.

S1ocki, I'm glad your party was awesome! But I am sad that I did not go. But I had fun at the party I went to, though there was no dancing, which is sad.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

i want to be a zombie and i want to go to a slocki party. thermo otm.

Whoa, sweet Ikea gig!

Jon, remind me again why you haven't drowned in your own vomit (ex machina), Saturday, 16 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahahaha.
omg, ha.
I went in there a few months ago and was like, wtf, buy your candlejars somewhere other than Ikea where EVERYBODY GOES. Not. Hip. Yo. /beeyatch

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 16 July 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

It would be awesome/funny/awesome-again if this became the Montreal part of the board. s1ocki, you alone can keep it popping up weekly, at least. Now I feel a kind of self-imposed cultural pressure, but its, uh, okay. /the people who are robyn

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 16 July 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

haha it was kind of ridiculuous to be djing at a bar in a boutique hotel (but it paid unbelievably well + free expensive drinks for me & my girl). but it ended up being pretty fun altogether!! weird $$ crowd ("trendy" but not "hipster"); no celeb-spottings unfortunately though!

and yeah i'm cool with this being mtl ilx!!
