does anyone else here on ILE know anyone who goes around telling everyone they are from a working class background to get credibility, actually, harping ON and ON about it, when actually they aren't. should poor people be insulted by this crass appropriation or should they be flattered? why do people think that it gives them credibility to be/pretend to be from a working class background?

Only idiots play that game. Who wants to be a pleb?

John Cougar Mellencamp?

Josh, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wouldn't know, I've never met him.

Hmmmm, the names Nigel Kennedy, Jamie Oliver and Guy Ritchie spring to mind here. The three biggest fakers of them all. They should just relax, be themselves and have done with it instead of continuously cultivating their ridiculous faux-cockney facades. Like Ladydie says, it's completely counterproductive.

Does P Diddy ever claim to be from the Projects? He'd be a suspect. I wonder if anyone's told him what "diddy" actually means? I have images of someone explianing to him while crooking their little finger.

it's completely counterproductive.

In what way? They seem to be doing pretty well for themselves.

Yes, god yes theres this girl in my class and she fucking harps on about her "background" in all our seminars, she's so annoying. the very first day we had to write a 400 word piece and tell the lecturer outloud what general topic it would cover. she said "life in rural ireland in a working class irish-german family with disabled parents". I mean ok I'm sure she has her trouble but stop fuckin talking about it and displaying it to everyone.

I reckon people do it cos they've nothing else going for them and they think it might make them more interesting.

oh and speaking of the naked chef, grrrrr I was walking through Dublin city yesterday and some guy said hey look its jamie oliver and everyone looked at me and giggled. i thought i'd never get that horrible comparison again, time for haircut, but its cold and I've got my eh debs in a few weeks so im scared to do anything drastic. do you have those in britain, debs, prom, ball whatever it's called?

i dont know how i wrote so much here.

"In what way? They seem to be doing pretty well for themselves."

In spite of their fake personnas, not because of them. I think most people would have a lot more respect for them if they dropped the facade.

Trevor, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's the only way they've got left to annoy the real plebs.

Tom, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who cares what your background is? It's the present that matters.

Samantha, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought this would be about silicone stuffed up yer bum.

helen fordsdale, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I sometimes like to pretend that I am from an upper class background, like Bertie Wooster. I need to get into more scrapes and have more capers.

james, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's hard to tell really around big cities where you never go to check out people's families. Smaller towns, you have to drive to pick someone up at their parents' house occasionally or if you went to their high school, you know their deal. Around here, if someone says they're from the projects or whatever, I just believe them. Who knows? More than likely they are, though. People who live in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx probably aren't rich.

Nude Spock, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can see why growing up poor would piss you off enough to harp on about it, but it's better to do something about it. What bothers me more is the tough act that goes along with it sometimes. The "I'm from tha streets" confrontational tone. From my experience, this seems to say, "I am a big talker. I learned how to intimidate people by hanging out on the street. But, as soon as you start kicking my ass, I learned how to run away on the streets, too." Street hoods aren't that tough unless they're in packs or happen to have weapons on them.

Here we all whine endlessly about how we are all hicks and everyone around us are as well, but since it's not 'i'm more of a hick than YOU!' it's a bonding thing. If it was competitive it would be really annoying and pointless.

Maria, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

being working class doesn't neccesarily mean you're from a poor background. it just means you're working class.

hamish, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight years pass...

I don't see why not getting all the breaks in life means you have to have a chip on your shoulder. The problem is that this is a stereotype and you're not doing your kind any favors in acting out a stereotype, it just perpetuates the idea that the downtrodden are bitter, narrow-minded and angry...and entitled.
