she's turning 8 this week. these days she's big into horses (of course), but is actually taking riding lessons. basically she can have whatever her cute little heart desires.

i generally try to get her stuff she'd never otherwise get from the parents/grandparents/other uncles and aunts. for instance, an ugly doll went over well a few years back.

this year, i totally spaced. her birthday is this week and i'm totally drawing a blank. i need suggestions stat, please!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 9 July 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

that's a "neigh"

john'n'chicago, Saturday, 9 July 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

when you have just the vaguest of clues for what you're looking, that google turns into a giant useless mocking text generator.

john speaks wizdom.

Encourage her to extress her inner goth with some gothic accoutrements - a coffin purse, perhaps, or a veil, or a skull ring. I'm thinking if the ugly doll worked before, well...

hrmm. the goth suggestion sent to some emily the strange stuff. maybe these:

don't wanna only give a kid stuffed animals though. erg. i gotta figure this out before i pick up my wife at the airport tonight...

emily the strange! yes! I think there are cute lil backpacks in that range.

what was that last pic? It looks like a strapped up cushionfish.

moley, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

It looks like a strapped up cushionfish.

pretty close. it's a sushi pillow of course, from http://www.theoriginalsushipillow.com

it's looking more and more like emily here. dunno how that's gonna go down with my sister...

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

She'll be the koolest kid in klass! The sushicushion is a good one too though.

moley, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

'Waiter, I would like some raw fish tied to a small rectangle of rice with a strip of seaweed.' Sushi is so weird. Sushicushions even more so.

moley, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

it's odd what google can come up with. sushi pillows were the best of them.

thanks for the idea moley. i think i'm about settled...

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

what did you decide then john?

moley, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

the above pictured kitty collection... two day UPS. crisis averted.

the sushi pillow will have to wait a few years.

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Alright! Nice one.

moley, Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

A camera.

Andy Warhol
Plush Banana
36-inch
A great tasting new version from SSUR! The fabric cover of this stuffed banana peels back to reveal a bright orange banana within, a reference to an Andy Warhol silkscreen print and the artwork for the Velvet Underground and Nico album cover. Two zippers on each side of the peel allow you to take the banana completely out of its skin! This plush also comes with a 10-inch green vinyl banana.

If you like this be sure to check out: 12-inch banana, 24-inch banana, Andy Warhol factory pack and Andy Warhol 1000% kubrick.

$119.95

Buy her some art supplies. You don't have to get her every pastel and stencil set under the sun, just enough to get her creative juices flowing more than usual. If something comes of it, you're the bestest uncle evar(!), and if not, she won't even remember by her next birthday.

matt p., Sunday, 10 July 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Matt on this. Spend time with her, go to the zoo? Do some arts and crafts with her? Plant an herb garden in a pot so she learns about cooking with herbs and has a living plant garden to care for and while you're at it, cook a meal with her so she learns what each of the herbs tastes like fresh from the garden and how it tastes on food...i.e., fresh basil leaves on pizza margherita? If she's a child of privledge, your time is the best gift you can give; that and simple pleasures and pizza making is a classic 8 year old thing to make in the kitchen! You will be the "bestest uncle" ever.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Monday, 11 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

i love the idea wiggy, and i'd love to spend time with her. the problem is that my sister and brother-in-law took her about 800 miles away from me. i'm hoping to get out to visit late this summer, but time and money get in the way. sigh.
