This is the thread where we stop MarkH stressing about having to move house

My landlord told me yesterday morning that I have to be out by Aug 13th as there's major building work starting.

A new kitchen, a new bathroom, new floors and (partially) a new roof. That's almost a whole NEW HOUSE.

It's cheap, safe and convenient here. And I've been here ten years. Yes, seriously.

yes, I know that's a little way off and I know that it's not the end of the world and there's far more important stuff kicking off at the mo, but it doesn't stop me worrying.

are you allowed to move back in when the work is finished?

yes, this has been on the cards for some time now - my landlord (whom I share the house with and who also has to find somewhere for the duration) told me this morning that he was waiving this month's rent and he says he's cool either way - I can move back if i want to but he would understand if I chose not to. One thing is certain - wherever I move to would be more expensive than where I am now. The builders apparently said the work would be finished in Decemeber but everyone told my landlord that builders nevreer finish on time and it was more likely to be January. Given the magnitude of the work I suspect even this is a conservative estimate and it is more likely to be February or March.

If you get along with him, see if he'd be interested in finding a place to share while work is going on. Might be a way to cut the costs.

What are the rates like on short term leases round your way? It seems like the easiest option is to throw most of your stuff in storage, bite the bullet on shit rent for a few months then move back in; if you're on a good deal at the moment, that is (and I take it you are).

That does sound sensible, thanks Matt. I'm bothered as much by the mechanics of having to do this as much as the business of finding a place. But I am also determined to plan properly and get things sorted well in advance - I know for a fact that I have a lot of junk which I can chuck out and I am going to make a start on that later today.
