Bob Woodward is a media-whore

I'm sure I'll be trampled to bits by all you people, but I think Bob Woodward's gleeful--and to my mind--whorish acknowledgement of Mark Felt as la Gorge Profonde is unprofessional. He's got a book out already, for god's sake. Just because people tell you secrets but blab themselves doesn't give you the right to tell everything you know. Keep the secret even if your source doesn't. That's what I think. If you're a journalist.

More here.

This is no revelation. He's been whoring ever since he cozied up to Casey during the Reagan years.

That's ridiculous. Why doesn't it?

I dunno. The Vanity Fair article made a pretty good case that Bob was on the fence about collaborating with Felt for a long time. Part of me thinks that once he realised that Felt was going to go forward, essentially for the money, I think he changed his mind. Felt's not in the greatest of mental states, so perhaps a more lucid retelling will be more helpful, vis a vis Woodward. But I think the bottom line is Vanity Fair got their exclusive mostly without his help, so he's playing catchup now. He's definitely a mediawhore about it, but I don't think it discredits how well he protected Felt.

No, I won't argue with you about that. But his faithfulness keeping the secret for so long is what bugs me about his balls-out cashing in on it now (and not for the first time, in a general sense).

EComplex (EComplex), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, Felt's cashing in too. For his family, sure, but he's cashing in. What's good for the goose, etc.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Yes definitely. But Felt's the source. He can do what he wants to do(in my elaborate world view entertainment product). I think Woodward's privileges are different as the journalist, that's all. Just as no one should force him to divulge this sources, neither should he jump into the fray just because Felt does. I grant it suffers logically, but there's something there that bugs me that I can't quite get to.

he's a journalist for god's sake, it's his job to "tell everything he knows"!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Woodward is a totally deluded, sellout whore. But I don't think he has done Felt wrong by elaborating or revealing his side of the relationship.

I am way more upset that 30 years later, Nixon's henchmen are the empowered, respectable media figures-- that some worthless fuckhole like Ben Stein could write the obscene hatchet piece that he did on Felt and still have a single reader, a job, or any measure of public esteem whatsoever. The DC politico-media complex is one big circle jerk, they deserve nothing but contempt.

To focus narrowly on some alleged duty to Felt held by Woodward is, I think, to seriously misidentify the problem here.

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but it's all part of the same cabal, somehow. After all, Woodward wouldn't be Woodward without Nixon. It's as if Nixon gave him his first job, in a manner of speaking.

John Belushi: Hey, that's Arnie! That's my manager, Arnie Fromson! And he's with Woodward... Bob fucking Woodward! I can't believe it! I've always wanted to meet that guy! Hey, Arnie! Arnie! Hey Arnie! Arnie! What's Arnie talking to Bob Woodward? I can't believe it, Bob Woodward! I used to do that guy!
Angel: Now he's doing you.
John Belushi: What'd you mean?
Angel: He's gonna be your Biographer.
John Belushi: My biographer? Bob Woodward? I'll go down in history!
Angel: Yeah! He gonna do for your what he did for Nixon.
[pause]
John Belushi: Nixon?
Angel: Gonna call the book "Wired". He's gonna trash your good name, Hemo, from here to...
John Belushi: I'm fucked.

The answer to these questions are, of course, obvious:

Greenwald is obnoxious.

I was at an event where Bob Woodward was asked about Bradley Manning. Woodward provided an enthusiastic defense.

(Nonetheless, I agree with the subject of this thread.)

ten years pass...

Thought I lucked into a first-edition All the President's Men at a thrift shop today. Close, but no--if I looked for such things more often I would have known how to check that right away.
