Defend The Indefensible: Andy Garcia

I just watched him bite Joe Mantegna's ear in The Godfather, Part III, but that was nothing compared to the scenery chewing he was doing right before that. Has he ever turned in a performance that wasn't completely laughable? I seem to remember not minding him in Dead Again, but that's about it.

all the defense he needs.

If it had been Chazz Palminteri's ear, I might have agreed with you.

k/l (Ken L), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

joe mantegna was the best part of godfather III.

I think any body who is born with the vestigal remains of a dead twin attached to his shoulder deserves a little slack..To say that the twin would have been a better actor is mean spirited and completely true.

# Chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#65). (1995)
# Born as a conjoined twin. His twin was no bigger than a tennis ball and was surgically removed. All that remains is a scar on his shoulder.
# During his rise to stardom, Garcia hasn't lived according to either the Latin lover or the Hollywood debauchery stereotypes.
# Owns 25 conga drums
# Collects hats
# Wears a beret in the winter.
# Family emigrated to the US in 1961.
# Gained weight when his wife was pregnant with three of their children.
# Garcia's early childhood in Miami Beach was punctuated by fisticuffs. Speaking little English, Garcia defended himself against insults, real and imagined.
# He still clings to old-fashioned values; he stands when a woman enters the room, and refuses to do nude scenes (he prefers to let romance bloom in viewers' imaginations).
# He once walked out of a audition when asked to remove his shirt.
# Doesn't even have a publicist.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Sunday, 10 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Pre-Godfather III he gave a dangerous, sexy performance in the likes of Year of the Dragon and a bland, forgettable one in The Untouchables, the latter of which foreshadowed his current situation.

Anyone see The Man In The Elysian Fields, in which he played a novelist (!) ghostwriting a book for James Coburn? Mick Jagger plays the head of an escort service (!!). It's beyond awful.

I know Andy Garcia. I've worked with Andy Garcia. You, sir, are no Andy Garcia.

Andy Garcia is no Teri Polo, however.

He's bad in that too. Ian Holm is good though, and James Gandolfini almost steals it.

No one has mentioned Just The Ticket! (which makes sense because I had no idea it existed until I had to watch it on a bus):

Gary Starke (Andy Garcia) was an orphan living on the streets at 13 who grew up to preside over a crew of street hustlers as the grand master of ticket scalpers. Charming, savvy, and honorable, Gary seems beloved by everyone until Linda (Andie MacDowell), the love of his life, dumps him. Tired of Gary's unreliability after eight years, Linda takes a scholarship to the Cordon Bleu in Paris to fulfill her dream of becoming a master chef. Gary, in a tailspin, is determined to win Linda back. However, his hated rival, Casino, chooses this moment of weakness to move in on Gary's position on the streets. Gary wants to fight, but Linda may never return to him if he continues scalping. A surprise announcement is made. Pope John Paul II will come to New York to perform Easter Mass at Yankee Stadium. It's Gary's big chance. With one last big score, he can quit scalping and win Linda back. Yet Casino (and the law) still stands in his way. Gary turns to his mentor, Benny (Richard Bradford), for guidance. With his help, Gary may find a different path around his desperation and win back the woman he loves. -- Ron Wells

Andy Garcia AND Andie MacDowell? That's box office poison personified- in ring and dagger format.

Haha, somehow that description makes the move sound even worse than it is.

He's probably a fine actor, but I have a revulsion towards anyone that was involved with Dead Again. The memories of the sheer awfulness of that movie still haunt me.

# Owns 25 conga drums
25?!? That's probably more than are owned by Jordan, Hurting and the Mad Puffin put together. We could probably throw in Sheila E and possibly, if he were still alive, Tito Puente himself, or better still, sharer-of-Ned-Raggett's-birthday Desi Arnaz, and still not get to twenty-five.

I really wish I didn't see movies as a kid. My initial reaction to Dead Again-bashing is thinking "hey wait, that movie is great...when I last saw it at 13..." and then I start thinking about scenes from the movie and realize what crap it must have been for a rational adult who wasn't jonesing for old-school melodrama.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

# He once walked out of a audition when asked to remove his shirt.

This is clearly because he has back hair. You can pretty much see the crown at his shoulders when he's wearing the sweatshirt in The Untouchables.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. If only Dan Hedaya had done the same thing.
